After My Mate Murdered My Mother, I Took His Crown

9.3 / 10.0
On a rain-soaked highway, she kneels beside her dying mother, counting three precise claw marks—not a rogue's panic, but a calculated kill. Her mate did this. Swearing revenge, she plots to dismantle his world, beginning with the throne he treasures. A dark werewolf tale of forbidden loyalty turned to obsession, where love becomes the deadliest weapon and every step toward justice is soaked in blood.

After My Mate Murdered My Mother, I Took His Crown Chapter 1

The rain hit my mother's face at 11:47 p.m. on a Tuesday, and she was still alive when I got to her.

Barely.

I skidded across the shoulder of the highway on my knees, gravel tearing through my jeans, and pulled her into my lap. Her healer's coat was black with blood in the rain-light. Her breath came in shallow, uneven pulls. Three claw marks across her chest — deep, precise, the kind of wound a rogue doesn't make by accident. Rogues panic. Rogues slash and run. Whoever did this had taken their time.

"Mom." I pressed my palm over the worst of it. My hand went red immediately. "Mom, look at me. Look at me."

Her eyes found mine. She smiled. That was the part that broke something in me — she smiled, like I was a child she'd caught coming home late.

"Ariana." Her fingers curled around mine and pushed something small and hard into my palm. Bone. Smooth, carved, familiar. The healer's sigil she'd worn on a leather cord for as long as I'd been alive. "Keep it. Keep — keep it hidden."

"I'm not — Mom, stop, save your breath, I'm calling —"

"Listen." Her voice was almost gone. "Whatever you learn tonight — you were mine before you were his. Remember that."

I didn't understand. I understood only that she was leaving.

And then the bond opened.

I hadn't felt Cassius through the mate channel in weeks — he kept it shut on his end most days, a wall of static I'd stopped knocking on. But something had cracked. Maybe distance. Maybe distraction. Maybe he simply forgot I could hear.

His voice slid into the back of my skull, warm, private, meant for someone else.

*"It's done. Your mother is avenged."*

A pause. A soft, satisfied exhale I knew intimately.

*"Sleep now, Marina."*

The rain kept falling. My mother's hand went slack in mine.

I don't remember closing her eyes. I remember my thumb moving to the inside of my opposite wrist and pressing there, hard enough to bruise, because if I did not put the pain somewhere small I was going to become the pain, and the pain was going to eat me before I could use it.

I did not scream.

I reached into the bond channel — the emotional one, the one that let him feel me — and I closed it. Not severed. Closed. Like a door in an empty house. My mark went cool against my collarbone, the biological warmth of him leaching out of my skin one breath at a time.

I picked up the wolfsbane-tipped claw fragment lodged in my mother's coat. I pocketed the sigil. I stood.

Inside my chest, my wolf — quiet for so long I'd almost forgotten the shape of her — dragged her claws down the walls of me and growled low.

*Not yet,* I told her.

She did not settle. But she waited.

---

I walked into the Ironveil pack house at 3:14 in the morning still wearing my mother's blood.

The night guard on the west door — a Delta whose sister my mother had delivered — looked at me, looked at my hands, and looked away. He did not stop me. He did not speak. He opened the door.

The records room was on the third floor, behind a bookcase in what everyone believed was Cassius's private study. Cassius believed it too. He'd stopped coming in years ago, back when he decided the paper was beneath him and my hands were good enough to hold it.

I unlocked the false panel. I took the rogue contract ledgers — six years of them, cross-referenced, dated, signed with the names of contract brokers who did not exist on any Ironveil payroll. I took the alliance correspondence. I took the shipping manifests that would connect a wolfsbane supplier in New Jersey to a payment routed through an Ironveil shell account eleven days ago.

I wrapped everything in oilcloth. I taped the wolfsbane fragment inside a folded page torn from an anatomy text. I strapped the bundle flat against my ribs under my sweater.

Then I went to my quarters and sat on the edge of the bed and did not cry.

My wolf paced.

*Soon,* I told her.

---

Dawn came gray and wet. He convened the pack in the great hall at seven.

I walked in through the north entrance. Two hundred wolves. Every face I had built alliances for, negotiated territory for, healed hands raw drafting treaties for. They stood in ranks. They did not look at me. Except Theo Ashby, near the back — Theo, whose twin daughters my mother had pulled through scarlet fever three winters ago. Theo looked at the dried blood still under my fingernails and his jaw locked.

Cassius stood on the dais.

He wore the black formal coat I chose for him last spring. His eyes were rimmed red. Whether from grief he had no right to or from something else, I did not care to guess.

He looked at me. He drew breath.

"I, Cassius Vane, Alpha of Ironveil —" his Alpha tone rolled out across the hall, pressing every wolf's shoulders down "— reject you, Ariana Blackwood, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck split.

Heat first. Then a tearing — deep, cellular, the sensation of something being unstitched from beneath the skin. Blood ran down my collarbone in a thin hot line. My wolf howled inside me, one raw note of fury, and I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted iron and I *did not make a sound.*

I pressed my thumb into my wrist.

The hall waited for the scream.

I gave them silence.

When the last echo of his voice died against the stone, I turned. I walked back down the center aisle. Two hundred wolves parted. Theo Ashby's eyes were wet.

Behind me, I heard the soft, unconscious sound of Cassius's fingers rising to his own neck — searching for a warmth that was no longer there.

I stepped through the doors into the rain.
