Chapter 1

“Mommy, where is Daddy?”

“I miss Daddy.”

It was my daughter’s last words that would haunt me until the end of time. As my poor daughter passed away, she was still thinking of her own murderer - her own father!

***

I, Adrianne Cordon, had no idea how long it had been until my faithful maid, Lily, begged me to stop standing by my dear daughter. My little girl, Marianne Black, laid beautifully on her bed. That girl had left this world.

But her final words would always haunt me.

“Mommy, where is Daddy?” she asked as she held me tightly.

The little girl said to me, “I miss Daddy.”

The only thing I could say to her was nothing but a lie. It really broke my heart beyond belief. My beautiful daughter looked at me, expecting an answer. So, I had no choice but to spout more and more lies.

“Daddy is coming here to meet you, sweetheart. So, be a good girl, okay?” I said, trying to console my dying daughter.

Again, I lied to my daughter. I would regret that very moment. After all, her father never came. In fact, Marianne never saw her father until her last breath as the Moon Priestess gave my daughter her last rite.

On the other hand, my husband, the Alpha of the Black Ebony Pack, decided to stay with his mistress, Olivia Smith, a barmaid in the tavern close to the outside of our pack territory, for a week in their luxurious mansion. While I was heartbroken, I knew that I couldn’t give up for my daughter’s sake. It was the last thing I could do.

Yet, this was the final straw for me. Last week was the catalyst for everything that happened. Jeremy got upset because his mistress, Olivia, had accused my own daughter of stealing her diamond ring. As usual, Jeremy believed her lies. He punished our daughter for staying outside despite the terrible rainstorm that hit our pack for the past few weeks. Despite my many pleas, the Alpha would not listen to me.

When Marianne started to cough more often, Jeremy told our pack doctor to take care of her while he was going to comfort his mistress. Unfortunately, it was way too late. Marianne was beyond saving.

I didn’t remember how many times I tried to tell Jeremy through our mind-link until he responded. His first words were like a dagger, stabbing deeply through my heart.

"Can you make it quick? I’m busy with Olivia here."

That was the first thing he said to me through the mind-link. It really made me angry, but there was nothing that angered me more after that as I heard another shrieky voice that I knew very well. The mistress’ voice was heard from the mind-link.

Olivia arrogantly said from my husband's mind-link, Oh, please don’t blame her, Alpha! I’m so sorry, Adrianne. We’re just having a very good time together."

After that, I could hear her loudly moan as if she wanted to show that she was the favorite woman. Yet, that mistress had no idea that I was immune to it after years of listening to it while I was trying to talk through the mind-link with my husband. Instead, what broke my heart was the fact that my late daughter’s father seemed not to care about his own daughter.

This was his daughter who died. His daughter still thought of her own father who was this man. I couldn’t help but grit my teeth. My whole body was hot with anger. Frankly, I never felt like this. It seemed that I was done with these two’s actions.

Their actions had taken Marianne’s life. This was truly unforgivable!

"Let’s sever our mating bond," I coldly told the man from the mind-link.

For a while, I heard nothing. Several minutes later, I could feel that the Alpha was raging. Clearly, I had humiliated him before his mistress.

He angrily shouted from the mind-link, "How dare you try to humiliate me like that!"

"So be it then! But that little girl will be with me! You’ll be a rogue, Adrianne! I’ll make sure of that," he continued with a very icy tone through the mind-link he used when he was really mad.

I calmly responded to him in the mind-link, "Good. I don’t care about it anymore. This marriage is nothing but a sham."

From his mind-link, I could hear Olivia gasp. Still, I could sense that she was excited from her tone even if she tried to conceal it. After all, I could see through her lies. Unlike my husband who was blinded by lust for his mistress.

"How dare you say that to me? You’ll be dead, Adrianne! I’ll make sure you and Marianne will be punished severely for humiliating me like this before my Olivia!" he angrily shouted back at me through the mind-link.

Just like that, Jeremy ended our mind-link. That was expected when the Alpha was with his mistress. It happened so many times. Still, this time was different. It was his own daughter who died!

The moment Marianne stopped breathing was the moment I also died. My whole body felt numb. Yet, there was one thing that I felt. It was rage.

“Marianne!” I shouted from the top of my lungs in agony.

The whole pack became quiet. It was as if they all were in mourning with me. Even the Moon Goddess pitied me as the bright, clear sky quickly turned into black. A lightning storm had come upon the Black Ebony pack as if it described the feeling I had.

While Jeremy was still frolicking with his mistress, I arranged the funeral for my daughter. The Black Ebony pack members who sympathized with me attended the funeral. Most of them were smallfolk, not nobles. They were maids, cooks, and servants in the castle. They all knew how wonderful, lovely, and bright Marianne was, just like me. They were all grieving this angel with me.

Just like me, they were crying silently. My beautiful Marianne was gone like that. How could someone so pure like my angel die in vain? There was no way I could forgive this! I had to avenge my daughter! I had to!

Per the Ebony Pack’s tradition, the royal family would be cremated when they died. As I was sending my daughter off before her body was being burnt, I looked at my little angel for the last time and kissed her forehead as I usually had when she cried.

“We’ll meet again, dear Marianne. I promise you, sweetheart. I’ll avenge your death,” I whispered to her lifeless body as I sent her tiny body to the royal incinerator.

As the fire started to swallow my late daughter’s body, I knew that I had to sever my bond with Jeremy for good. For years, I endured being humiliated by that man for my daughter. Every night, I always thought of ending my life.

Nonetheless, Marianne would stop me. Her bright smile made me survive this harsh pack. But she was no longer here. So, what was the point of holding back? Since my daughter was no longer on this earth, why would I need to embarrass myself more?

I made a promise to myself as I angrily shouted in my mind, Jeremy, Olivia, I’ll make sure that you two will pay the price for Marianne’s death!
