Chapter 2

The scent trail led me through the moonlit forest like breadcrumbs in a fairy tale—except this story had no happy ending. Pine and earth, wild rain and something floral that made my stomach turn. Cameron's scent, intertwined with hers in a way that spoke of intimacy, of rituals, of sacred bonds that should never have been.

I followed the path deeper into pack lands, past the training grounds, beyond the ceremonial circle where our own marking had taken place just months ago. My wolf whined with each step, recognizing something that my human mind refused to accept.

The clearing appeared suddenly, bathed in silver moonlight that revealed everything I'd hoped not to find. Scattered rose petals, their deep red turned black in the darkness. Melted candle wax pooled around stone markers arranged in a perfect ritual circle. The ceremonial dagger we'd used for our own marking ceremony lay abandoned on the altar stone, its blade still stained.

My knees buckled. This was a marking site. A sacred bonding circle. And the scents—Cameron and Arlet, mixed together in the intimate way that only came from blood exchange, from the deepest werewolf rituals.

He'd marked her. Here, in secret, using the same ancient ceremonies that bound us together.

I stumbled back to our chambers, my mind reeling. The evidence clung to my clothes, my skin, my very soul. When Cameron returned an hour later, his hair still tousled, his shirt wrinkled, I was waiting.

"I found the clearing," I said without preamble.

He paused in the doorway, his amber eyes meeting mine with something that might have been relief. No surprise. No denial. Just... acknowledgment.

"Good," he said, closing the door behind him. "I was wondering when you'd stop pretending not to notice."

The casual cruelty of it stole my breath. "Cameron, what have you done?"

"What I needed to do." He moved to the dresser, began removing his watch with steady hands. "A strong Alpha can handle multiple bonds, Natasha. You should be grateful I chose to keep our Luna bond intact for political reasons."

Grateful. The word hit me like a physical blow.

"You marked her," I whispered. "You performed the sacred rituals with another she-wolf. You betrayed our mate bond—"

"I strengthened it." His Alpha tone cut through my protests like a blade. "Pack strength requires diverse bloodlines, multiple heirs. What we have is political necessity. What I have with Arlet is—"

"Is what?" My voice cracked. "Love? Passion? Everything our bond lacks?"

He turned then, his face carved from stone. "What we have is duty, Natasha. Don't confuse it with anything more."

The mate bond flared between us, but instead of warmth, it brought only pain. Like chains around my soul, binding me to someone who saw me as nothing more than a political asset.

My wolf raged against the connection, clawing at the sacred ties that suddenly felt like shackles.

Over the following days, Cameron's control became systematic. Surgical. During pack meetings, when I tried to question his decision to give Arlet access to the armory, his Alpha tone crashed over me like a wave.

"Silence, Natasha."

My words died in my throat, the mate bond amplifying his command until I trembled with suppressed rage. Around the table, pack elders shifted uncomfortably, but none dared challenge their Alpha's authority over his marked mate.

At the formal dinner with neighboring pack leaders, when Arlet took the seat traditionally reserved for the Luna's closest advisor, I started to object. Cameron's voice cut across the room like a whip.

"Smile, Natasha. Support your pack's decisions."

My face arranged itself into a pleasant expression against my will, my body betraying me as thoroughly as my mate had. Across the table, Alpha Vincent's Luna watched with growing concern, her diplomatic mask slipping as she witnessed something that violated every protocol of werewolf society.

But the worst came during warrior training. I'd been directing formation exercises, using my Luna authority to coordinate defensive strategies, when Cameron's voice boomed across the training ground.

"Arlet will take command of the eastern flank."

Every warrior froze. Arlet stepped forward, her smile sharp as broken glass, and began issuing orders that contradicted mine. When I tried to reassert my authority, Cameron's Alpha tone slammed into me again.

"Stand down. Fresh perspectives strengthen our defensive strategies."

I stood there, humiliated before my own pack, watching a rogue she-wolf command warriors who should have answered to their Luna. The younger pack members exchanged glances, gossip already forming. The elders' faces showed barely concealed disapproval—not of Cameron, but of my apparent weakness, my inability to maintain my position.

That night, alone in chambers that no longer felt like home, I pressed my hands to my stomach and felt the first flutter of life growing there. My secret, my burden, my hope.

At least this child would be mine alone.

The door opened without warning. Not Cameron—Arlet. She glided into my private space like she owned it, her green eyes bright with malicious joy.

"We need to talk," she said, settling into Cameron's chair like a queen claiming her throne.

My wolf bristled. "Get out."

"Oh, I don't think so." Her smile widened. "You see, I have news. Wonderful news that I simply had to share with my dearest friend."

She placed her hand on her still-flat stomach with deliberate ceremony.

"I'm pregnant," she announced. "With Cameron's heir."

The words hit me like ice water. "That's impossible—"

"Is it?" She leaned forward, her eyes glittering. "Tell me, Natasha, do you remember your marking ceremony? That beautiful, sacred night when Cameron claimed you as his Luna?"

Of course I remembered. The most important night of my life. The ritual that bound our souls together under the blessing of the full moon.

"Do you remember how deeply you slept afterward?" Arlet continued, her voice sweet as poison. "How Cameron used his Alpha command to ensure you wouldn't wake, no matter what sounds might come from the chambers next door?"

My blood turned to ice.

"He marked me that same night," she whispered. "While the ceremonial moon still blessed the sky. While your mating scent still clung to his skin. He came to me within an hour of claiming you, performed the same sacred rituals, spoke the same binding words."

She pulled out her phone, swiped to a photo that made my world collapse. Cameron, shirtless and magnificent in the moonlight, his canines extended as he bit into a pale throat that wasn't mine. Arlet's face, twisted in ecstasy, her own fangs buried in his shoulder.

The timestamp showed the date of my marking ceremony. Three hours after Cameron had claimed me as his Luna.

"He desecrated our bond," I breathed.

"He completed it," Arlet corrected. "You were the political necessity. I was the choice. And this child—" she caressed her stomach again, "—was conceived while you slept off your 'sacred' night, dreaming of a love that never existed."

The mate bond burned like acid in my veins. Every moment of that night, every whispered promise, every sacred vow—all of it contaminated by this revelation.

When I confronted Cameron hours later, he showed no shame. No remorse. Just cold calculation.

"Creating multiple heirs strengthens the pack bloodline," he said, as if discussing crop rotation. "Ensures succession security. You should understand the strategic value."

"You used Alpha commands to drug me," I whispered. "On our marking night. You violated every sacred tradition—"

"I secured our future," he cut me off. "Both of our futures. Stop acting like Luna hysteria and start thinking like the Beta's daughter you are."

Luna hysteria. As if my pain, my betrayal, my shattered faith were nothing more than feminine weakness.

I stared at this stranger wearing my mate's face and felt something fundamental shift inside me. The sacred bond that had defined my identity, my purpose, my very soul—it felt like chains now. Chains I was finally ready to break.
