Chapter 2

In that moment, with champagne soaking into his expensive suit and curious glances being thrown our way, I realized I was in far deeper trouble than simply crashing an exclusive party.

The Moon Goddess had a twisted sense of humor, it seemed. Because somehow, impossibly, my wolf was recognizing Drake Kingsley—Alpha heir and completely out of my league—as her mate.

"I asked who you are," Drake repeated, his voice dropping lower, almost a growl that sent shivers racing across my skin.

I swallowed hard, fighting the urge to bare my neck in submission. "Charlotte," I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. "Charlotte Mills."

His eyes never left mine, that golden gaze seeming to peer straight into my soul. Around us, the celebration continued, but it felt as though we were encased in a bubble, the sounds muffled and distant.

"You don't belong here," he stated, not unkindly, but with absolute certainty. It wasn't a question.

Heat flooded my cheeks. "I... I'm sorry about your suit. I can pay for—"

"Follow me," he interrupted, taking my elbow gently but firmly. His touch sent a jolt of electricity up my arm, and Hope whined again, pressing against the boundaries of my consciousness.

Before I could protest, Drake was guiding me away from the main celebration, his presence behind me both terrifying and thrilling. I caught a glimpse of Lexi's wide-eyed stare as Drake led me past her. She mouthed something that looked suspiciously like "What the hell?" but I could only offer a helpless shrug in return.

We moved through the crowd, which parted effortlessly before the Alpha heir. I felt the weight of curious stares on my back, but Drake seemed oblivious to them, his focus entirely on me. He led me to a small alcove formed by ancient oak trees, secluded enough that the sounds of the celebration dimmed to a gentle murmur.

"You're not Beta rank," he said once we were alone, his eyes still studying me with that unnerving intensity. "Yet my wolf..."

He didn't finish the sentence, but he didn't need to. I felt it too—that inexplicable pull, the way Hope paced restlessly inside me, yearning to be closer to him.

"I shouldn't be here," I admitted, wringing my hands. "My friend Lexi thought it would be fun to sneak in. I never meant to cause trouble."

To my surprise, Drake's lips curved into a small smile. "Trouble seems to have found us both regardless."

The moonlight filtering through the leaves cast dappled shadows across his face, highlighting the sharp angles of his jaw and the fullness of his lips. He was even more handsome up close, and I found myself struggling to maintain my composure.

"Have you ever felt it before?" he asked softly, taking a step closer. "This... connection?"

I shook my head, unable to lie to him. "Never."

"Nor have I." His admission seemed to cost him something, a brief vulnerability flashing across his features before his expression settled into something more thoughtful. "Tell me about yourself, Charlotte Mills."

And so, under the watchful gaze of the rising moon, I found myself talking to Drake Kingsley as if we were old friends. I told him about my position in the pack, my work at the supply store, even my dreams of someday traveling beyond our territory. He listened with genuine interest, asking questions that revealed a thoughtfulness I hadn't expected from someone of his station.

In turn, he shared glimpses of his own life—the weight of expectations that came with being the Kingsley heir, his hopes for uniting the fractured werewolf packs, his love of thunderstorms and old jazz music. With each passing minute, the initial shock of our connection gave way to something deeper, a sense of recognition that transcended our vastly different positions in the pack hierarchy.

"Do you believe in fate, Charlotte?" Drake asked after a comfortable silence had settled between us. The celebration continued in the distance, but it felt like we existed in our own private world.

"I don't know," I answered honestly. "Hope—my wolf—she's never been very assertive. But tonight..." I trailed off, unsure how to describe the certainty I felt in my bones.

"Khan has never reacted to anyone the way he did to you," Drake said, referring to his wolf. "The moment I caught your scent..."

He stepped closer, and I found myself backing up until my shoulders met the rough bark of an oak tree. Drake placed one hand beside my head, leaning in until I could feel the warmth radiating from his body.

"May I?" he whispered, his eyes dropping to my lips.

My heart threatened to beat out of my chest as I nodded, unable to form words. The first brush of his lips against mine was gentle, questioning, but the moment our mouths connected fully, something primal ignited between us.

The kiss deepened, his free hand coming up to cradle my face with surprising tenderness. Hope howled in triumph within me, and I could feel Khan's answering rumble in the way Drake's chest vibrated against mine.

When we finally broke apart, both breathing heavily, the look in Drake's eyes had changed from curiosity to certainty.

"Come with me," he said, his voice husky with emotion and desire.

"Where?" I asked, though I knew I would follow him anywhere in that moment.

"Somewhere private. I want to know you, Charlotte Mills. All of you."

The full moon had risen completely now, bathing the forest in silver light as Drake led me away from the celebration, his hand warm and secure around mine. We walked in comfortable silence, the connection between us humming like a live wire.

His private suite was located in a separate wing of the pack house, far from the prying eyes of other pack members. As he unlocked the door and ushered me inside, I was struck by how the space reflected the man—elegant yet understated, powerful without being ostentatious.

"Are you sure about this?" Drake asked, his golden eyes searching mine as he closed the door behind us. Despite the obvious desire in his gaze, there was also respect, a willingness to step back if I had any doubts.

But I had none. For the first time in my life, Hope and I were in perfect alignment, both certain of what we wanted.

"I'm sure," I whispered, reaching up to trace the strong line of his jaw with my fingertips.

That was all the confirmation he needed. Drake's lips found mine again, the kiss deeper and more urgent than before. His hands spanned my waist, lifting me effortlessly and carrying me to his bed. The moonlight streamed through the large windows, illuminating our bodies as clothes were slowly discarded.

"You're beautiful," Drake murmured against my skin, his lips tracing a path down my neck. When he reached the sensitive junction where my neck met my shoulder—the place where mates left their mark—he hesitated, his breath hot against my skin.

"Not yet," he whispered, pressing a gentle kiss there instead. "When the time is right."

The night unfolded in a haze of passion and tenderness. Drake's hands and mouth seemed to know exactly how to touch me, as if he'd been mapping my body his entire life. I explored him with equal fervor, marveling at the strength in his muscled frame and the gentleness in his touch.

Between moments of intense passion, we talked, sharing secrets and dreams in hushed voices. Drake spoke of his fears of failing his family, of the loneliness that came with his position. I confessed my own insecurities, the feeling of invisibility that had followed me through life.

"I see you, Charlotte," he whispered, his forehead pressed against mine. "I've never seen anyone more clearly."

As dawn approached, we lay tangled together, my head resting on his chest, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on my bare back. The connection between us felt unbreakable, a bond forged in moonlight and sealed with whispered promises.

"I never expected to find you," Drake murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "Especially not tonight."

"Do you regret it?" I asked, a flicker of insecurity resurfacing.

"Not for a single moment," he assured me, tightening his arms around me. "Rest now. We have time."

Secure in his embrace, I drifted into a peaceful sleep, Hope curled contentedly within me.

When I woke, the room was bathed in morning light—and I was alone. The space beside me was empty, the sheets cool to the touch. Panic fluttered in my chest as I sat up, clutching the sheet to my bare chest.

"Drake?" I called, but only silence answered.

That's when I noticed the piece of paper on the pillow beside me. With trembling fingers, I unfolded it, my eyes scanning the hastily scribbled words:

"Urgent family matter. I will find you. —D"

Just five words and an initial. No explanation, no way to contact him. Hope whimpered in confusion and disappointment as I stared at the note, the magical night suddenly feeling distant and dreamlike.

What had I done? I'd given myself completely to a man who could disappear with nothing but a hastily scrawled note. A man whose world was so far removed from mine that last night felt like a beautiful, impossible fantasy.

As I gathered my clothes and dressed with shaking hands, I tried to convince myself that Drake's promise meant something. That "I will find you" wasn't just words on paper.

But as I slipped out of his suite and made my way back to my own modest quarters, doubt crept in like a shadow. What place could someone like me possibly have in the life of Drake Kingsley, Alpha heir and future leader?

Little did I know that our one night together had set in motion events that would change both our lives forever—in ways neither of us could have imagined.
