Chapter 3

Six weeks had passed since that night with Drake, and I still found myself replaying every moment in my mind—the way his golden eyes had locked with mine, how his touch had ignited something primal within me, and the hastily scrawled note he'd left behind.

'I will find you.'

But he hadn't. Not a word, not a message, nothing. Hope whimpered occasionally, sensing my disappointment, but I'd forced myself to accept reality. To Drake Kingsley, Alpha heir and future leader, I had probably been nothing more than a fleeting distraction.

I was restocking shelves at the pack's supply store when the first wave of dizziness hit me. The room tilted sideways, products blurring before my eyes. I grabbed the edge of a shelf to steady myself.

"Charlotte? You okay?" My coworker Mia's voice sounded distant, as if coming through water.

"I'm fine," I managed, though the words felt thick on my tongue. "Just a little—"

The nausea struck without warning. One moment I was upright, the next I was bolting for the employee bathroom, barely making it before emptying my stomach. Cold sweat beaded on my forehead as I heaved, gripping the porcelain bowl like a lifeline.

This wasn't the first time. For the past week, mornings had become a miserable routine of nausea and dizziness. I'd blamed it on a stomach bug, on stress, on anything but the possibility that terrified me most.

When I finally emerged from the bathroom, Mia was waiting with concern etched across her face.

"That's the third time this week," she said, handing me a cup of water. "You should see Elara."

Elara Vance was our pack's healer, known for her skill and discretion. But seeing her would make this real, would force me to confront the suspicion that had been growing in my mind.

"I'll be fine," I insisted, taking a sip of water. "It's just—"

The room spun again, faster this time, and the last thing I remember was Mia's panicked voice calling my name as darkness closed in.

I woke to the smell of herbs and the soft glow of lamplight. Elara's healing den was tucked away at the edge of pack territory, a cozy cottage filled with plants and ancient remedies. The healer herself sat beside the bed where I lay, her silver-streaked hair pulled back in a neat braid, her eyes sharp with knowledge and concern.

"Welcome back," she said, her voice gentle but firm. "You gave poor Mia quite a scare."

I tried to sit up, but Elara placed a restraining hand on my shoulder. "Easy now. You're dehydrated and exhausted."

"I'm sorry for the trouble," I murmured, embarrassment heating my cheeks. "I think I just have a stomach bug or something."

Elara's expression didn't change, but something in her eyes—a knowing look—made my heart race. "Charlotte," she said carefully, "I need to ask you some personal questions. And I need you to be honest with me."

I swallowed hard, already knowing where this was heading. "Okay."

"When was your last cycle?"

The question hung in the air between us. I did the mental calculation, though I already knew the answer. "About two weeks before the summer solstice," I whispered.

"And have you been intimate with anyone since then?"

Drake's face flashed in my mind—his intense golden eyes, the feel of his skin against mine. "Once," I admitted, my voice barely audible. "The night of the solstice celebration."

Elara nodded, no judgment in her expression. "I suspected as much. With your permission, I'd like to examine you more thoroughly."

I nodded, fear and resignation washing over me in equal measure. Hope stirred anxiously within me as Elara placed her hands on my abdomen, her eyes closing in concentration. I felt a gentle warmth spreading from her palms, a subtle probing energy that was both comforting and invasive.

After several long minutes, Elara's eyes snapped open, widening with shock. She pulled her hands away as if burned, staring at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"What?" I asked, panic rising in my throat. "What's wrong?"

Elara took a deep breath, composing herself. "Charlotte," she said carefully, "you're pregnant."

Though I'd suspected it, hearing the words spoken aloud made my heart stutter. "I... I thought maybe..."

"But that's not all," Elara continued, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "You're carrying triplets."

The room seemed to tilt again. "Triplets?" I echoed weakly. "That's... that's not possible. Werewolves rarely have multiples."

"Rarely, yes, but not never." Elara's expression had grown grave. "And these aren't ordinary pups, Charlotte. The energy signature is... remarkable. Alpha-strong, all three of them."

My hand flew to my stomach instinctively. Three babies. Three Alpha-strong babies. Drake's babies. The implications crashed over me like a tidal wave.

"Who is the father?" Elara asked, though from her expression, I suspected she already had an idea.

I hesitated, terror gripping me. To admit I'd been with Drake Kingsley, to reveal that I was carrying the heirs to one of the most powerful werewolf lineages...

"I can't say," I whispered.

Elara studied me for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "I understand. But Charlotte, you need to realize what this means. Alpha-strong triplets are... unprecedented. They would be invaluable to any pack, especially to a powerful lineage."

The unspoken warning hung in the air between us. If the Kingsley family discovered I was carrying Drake's heirs, what would they do? Would they welcome me, a low-ranking wolf with no status or connections? Or would they see me as nothing more than a vessel, a means to secure their lineage?

Worst of all, what if they took my babies away?

"No one can know," I said, my voice stronger now, fueled by a sudden fierce protectiveness. Hope growled in agreement, maternal instinct surging through both of us. "Please, Elara. No one can know."

The healer's expression softened with sympathy. "Your secret is safe with me for now, Charlotte. Healer-patient confidentiality is sacred. But you need to understand—this isn't something you can hide forever. Especially not with three Alpha pups growing inside you."

I closed my eyes, trying to process the enormity of my situation. Drake had disappeared without a trace, leaving nothing but a vague promise. I had no way to contact him, no idea if he even meant to keep his word. And now I was carrying his children—three powerful heirs that would undoubtedly become the center of a political storm if their parentage was discovered.

"What am I going to do?" I whispered, more to myself than to Elara.

The healer took my hand, her grip firm and reassuring. "For now, you're going to rest and take care of yourself. I'll give you herbs for the nausea and vitamins for the pups. We'll figure out the rest one step at a time."

But as I lay there, one hand resting protectively over my still-flat stomach, I knew that time was not on my side. Soon, my condition would become impossible to hide. Soon, I would have to make decisions that would alter the course of not just my life, but the lives of my unborn children.

And somewhere out there was Drake Kingsley, oblivious to the fact that he was about to become a father three times over. A man whose family might see my babies as assets rather than children. A man who had promised to find me, but had left me alone to face the most terrifying challenge of my life.

"The Kingsley family," Elara said softly, breaking into my thoughts, "they're not known for their mercy, Charlotte. If they discover you're carrying their heirs..."

She didn't need to finish. The warning was clear enough.

I had to protect my cubs, my dear babies. No matter the cost.
