Chapter 2

I didn’t have the mood to mind their attitude. All I really cared about was Frank's true colors.

So, I straightforwardly asked him, "Bridger, what do you think?"

Standing beside Jenna, he shot me a disgusted look and declared, "My sister is fore-sighted, Natalie. You've let me down this time. How dare you scheme against me."

I couldn't believe my ears. He was actually thinking the same twisted thoughts as his family.

"How on earth did I scheme against you? I used my own money to buy a department and paid off the loan by myself. Where's the conspiracy in that?"

His self-righteous attitude that was driving me insane.

"The money you used to buy the department was meant for us to live together after marriage. Now, it's become your own separate property. Even if we end up divorcing, it'll be solely yours. And what about our future after marriage? Are you going to spend my money?"

I never expected him to overthink things like this.

His monthly salary of just over 1,400 dollars meant nothing to me. Little did he know that I wasn't just some average employee he saw every day. In fact, I was the one who paid his salary every month.

Two years ago, when I started working at the company as an intern, my dad wanted me to begin from the bottom and not reveal my true identity as his daughter. So, I went to work like any other regular employee, clocking in and out, even ordering takeout for meals.

It was during that time that I crossed paths with Bridger.

I had planned to reveal everything at our wedding, surprise him, and then arrange a better job for him.

What a shame it had come to this.

I glanced at the conniving family in front of me. Some people simply didn't deserve to live a fortunate life.

I remembered my mother's promise to buy me a department worth millions, yet here I was with a department worth a mere 140,000 dollars.

Heh!

Cora's voice pierced through the air with a shrill tone.

"Natalie, I'll give you two choices now."

I stared at Cora coldly.

"And what might those be?"

Cora crossed her arms smugly.

"Option one: Sell this department as soon as possible and take the cash along with the money your family gave you as dowry, and get married with my son."

I immediately rejected the idea.

"Not happening. I disagree."

She added with a smirk.

"Then there's option two. Since you don't want to sell it, let my mother have the house’s ownership, and you won't have to bother with buying one for my mother again."

Cora was absolutely out of her mind.

"It's my department, my hard-earned money. What reason do I have to hand it over to your mother? Doesn't she have a son? Doesn't she have a daughter? Am I the one responsible for buying her a department?"

Cora was so fired up that she had the audacity to try slapping me again. I glared back at her, seething with anger.

"You still want to lay a hand on me? Don't think I won't fight back."

She gingerly touched her recently injured waist and recoiled.

"If you want to marry my son, you better bring all your assets into our departmenthold before you tie the knot. After you're married, my son's salary will go toward paying off the mortgage. Your salary and savings will be used for daily expenses and the costs of childbirth."

"That's how a normal family operates."

I couldn't help but smile.

Since when was their notion of a "normal family" actually normal? It seemed like it was only normal to them.

They accused me of plotting with regards to the premarital property. I had no idea who was scheming against whom. Bridger bought an apartment for 150,000 dollars previous, and now he pays a monthly mortgage of 700 dollars. His down payment contracted for 15 years. and the department he bought was registered under the name of Cora. Both Jenna and Cora lived there. It had nothing to do with me. However, Cora insisted that it was our future wedding department. Finally, I knew them clearly and understood the brilliance of my mother's idea. It was clear that when it came to their own interests, Bridger had no moral integrity. With his monthly salary of over 14,00 dollars already reduced by a half, and an additional 400 dollars given to his mother, how much money would he have left? It was evident that they could only rely on my money, but that was insignificant. Their daily expenses were uncertain. They also accused me of scheming, but I didn't never thought to scheme against anyone. However, just buying a department for myself seemed to threaten their very existence.
