Chapter 1

After giving my son, Cameron Spencer, one of my corneas, he had a memory distortion and confused me for his father's childhood sweetheart, Joanna Lister.

Such dreadful news caused me to be in so much pain that I refused to wake up.

However, during the time that I was semiconscious, I heard my son and my husband's conversation.

"Dad, does this mean Joanna will keep me company in the future?"

"Yes, it does. You've put on a great act, son!"

My attending surgeon couldn't stand their heartlessness and said, "Mr. Spencer, your son’s eyes are fine, but you lied to Mrs. Spencer in order for her to donate her cornea for Ms. Lister. If Mrs. Spencer finds out, I'm afraid..."

"There's nothing to be afraid of. She loves Cameron and me so much and she's an orphan as well. There's nowhere she could go after leaving us. Joanna's all alone in this city and she's almost gone blind. We can't waste any more time!"

I lay on the bed as my hopeless tears soaked the pillow.

All they cared about was Joanna.

But what they didn't know was that I was dying due to the operation.

When I woke up, Jack Spencer, who was supposed to be by my bedside, had long disappeared.

After enduring the sympathetic glances from the nearby medical staff and returning home alone, I saw Jack enjoying a romantic candlelight dinner with Joanna Lister.

When he saw me return, Jack quickly stood up.

“Honey, you’re back. Why didn’t you tell me you were being discharged? I would’ve come to pick you up. You’ve been through such a major surgery—it must’ve been so hard on you. I promise from now on, Cameron and I will take good care of you!”

His gaze was as gentle as ever, but I suddenly felt completely drained.

Beneath the mask he wore was nothing but fake affection.

I ignored him and instead looked at Joanna, who sat there acting like the lady of the house.

“Why is she here?”

Jack cleared his throat and explained, “She’s here for Cameron of course. He only remembers Joanna now. The doctor also said the more they interact, the better it is for his recovery.”

Just then, Cameron—my own flesh and blood—charged at me and began pushing me.

“You bad woman! Why are you bullying my mom!”

I pursed my lips as the blood in my body instantly turned cold.

The pain of being betrayed by the two people I loved most nearly made me lose my balance.

Before the surgery, the doctor had already warned me.

My body wasn’t suitable for such an operation—forcing it would only shorten my lifespan.

But Cameron was still so young, and I couldn’t bear to watch him go blind.

A cornea—if that was the last gift I, as his mother, could give him, I was willing.

But all of my wholehearted devotion had only been exchanged for betrayal, over and over again!

Everything had been a trap they set for me, all for Joanna!

Seeing the situation, Joanna twisted her body forward to play peacemaker.

“Cameron, that’s enough. You can’t hit people.”

I looked into her smug eyes, shaking with fury.

Sensing the shift in atmosphere, Jack quickly handed me a gift bag.

“Honey, this is a gift I chose for you to congratulate you on your discharge.”

I looked down at it.

Inside was a set of women’s lingerie—a rather bold style.

Jack’s face paled. He immediately tried to explain that he’d grabbed the wrong one.

But I had never worn anything like that before—he knew exactly who it was for.

I laughed in anger and threw the clothes at his face, then turned and stormed back to my room.

But the sound of laughter and joy from outside was so loud it hurt my eardrums.

At that moment, I had completely become an outsider in this house.

Yet only a moment later, Cameron knocked on my bedroom door.

He walked into my room without any courtesy and said in a near-commanding tone, “My doll is torn. You fix it!”
