Chapter 3

"Dave! Dave, help me!"

Victoria’s scream split the quiet morning air. She burst into the living room, clutching a torn silk robe against her collarbone. Red welt marks streaked down the side of her neck.

Dave sprinted down the staircase, half-buttoned shirt flapping against his chest. "What happened? Victoria, what is this?"

"She came into the guest room while you were showering," Victoria sobbed, collapsing against his chest. "I was asleep. She rolled in, grabbed a shattered piece of the urn from last night, and held it to my throat!"

I sat frozen by the dining table, my coffee growing cold between my palms. "Are you insane? I haven't left this room since dawn."

"Don't lie!" Victoria shrieked, burying her face in Dave's neck. "Look at my room, Dave! Go look at what she did!"

Dave gave me a sickened look before jogging toward the guest wing. He returned ten seconds later, carrying a shredded camisole and a jagged shard of ceramic.

"Explain this, Sabrina," Dave demanded, holding up the bloody cloth.

"She staged it," I said, meeting his glare without flinching. "I don't have the balance to lean over a bed and pin someone down, Dave. You know that better than anyone."

"Check the cameras," Victoria wept, trembling against his arm. "Show her the footage, Dave. Please."

Dave grabbed the living room tablet and tapped the security application. His thumbs flew across the screen, then paused.

"The feed," Dave muttered, his brow furrowing. "The hallway cameras cut out at three in the morning."

"What a shock," I said, a dry laugh rattling in my ribs. "How convenient for her."

"It's not convenient, it's terrifying!" Clara's voice chimed in from the kitchen archway. The nurse hurried forward, drying her hands on a dishcloth. "Mr. Callan, I didn't want to say anything, but when I arrived at six, Mrs. Callan was muttering by the stairs. She was saying she'd rather burn this house to the ground than let anyone else have it."

"Clara, you lying snake," I snapped, pivoting my chair toward her. "How much did she pay you?"

"I don't need payment to speak the truth!" Clara took a hurried step behind Dave. "You've been hostile for weeks. Throwing your medicine, refusing your sponge baths—"

"I never refused a thing!"

"She's losing her grip, Dave," Victoria whispered, tugging on his sleeve, her voice dropping into a soft, venomous purr. "Look at her eyes. She isn't well. The shock from last night... maybe she can't distinguish reality anymore. What if she grabs a knife next time? What if she tries to hurt herself?"

Dave looked down at the shredded fabric, then at Victoria's red neck, and finally at me. That tiny flicker of guilt that had haunted his eyes at midnight flickered and went out.

"Dave," I said, my voice dropping dangerously low. "Think about what she's doing. You've known me for twelve years."

"That was before the accident, Sabrina," Dave said quietly. He reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a folded sheaf of documents. "I called Dr. Sterling’s private clinic an hour ago. They're already outside."

Two men in navy medical scrubs pushed through the front double doors, carrying a transport stretcher and a set of nylon restraints.

Panic flared hot in my chest. "You called an asylum for me?"

"It's a specialized psychiatric recovery center," Dave said, signing the bottom line on the intake clipboard one of the men handed him. His signature was clean, sharp, practiced. "You're not well. The trauma is finally catching up to you."

The attendants stepped forward. One of them reached for my wheelchair handles.

"Don't touch me!" I shoved his hands away, but the other grabbed my wrists, twisting them down against the armrests.

"Please cooperate, Mrs. Callan," the orderly muttered.

They hoisted my dead weight off my chair and dropped me onto the transport gurney. As they strapped the thick canvas bands over my waist and deadened thighs, I reached out with everything I had left, grabbing Dave's forearm. My fingernails bit into his skin through his linen shirt.

"Look at me," I choked out, staring straight into his hollow face. "Do you really believe her? After everything I gave you, you believe this cheap knockoff?"

Dave pried my fingers off his sleeve, one by one. He couldn't hold my gaze. He stared at the brass buttons of the orderly's uniform instead.

"Sabrina," Dave whispered, voice flat, dead, devoid of anything human. "You need treatment."

They rolled me down the front steps, down the concrete ramps Dave had built for photographers, and shoved the gurney into the back of a windowless white van. The heavy metal doors slammed shut, plunging me into dim fluorescent gloom.

The drive lasted forty minutes.

When they hauled me out, the sea air hit my face, cold and biting. The building looked like an old fortress perched on a cliffside, surrounded by iron gates and manicured hedge mazes.

Inside the intake office, an orderly tipped my personal bag onto a stainless-steel counter.

"Standard protocol," a woman in gray scrubs announced, not looking at me.

She swept my smartphone, my wallet, my emergency credit cards, and my ring of villa keys into a thick yellow evidence pouch.

"Those are my house keys," I said, struggling to sit up against the gurney straps. "You can't seize my private property."

"Patient items are held until discharge by legal guardian," the woman replied monotonously, zipping the pouch shut.

Right before she switched off the power on my phone, the screen lit up with a notification.

An incoming text from Victoria.

The woman held the screen up for a second before pressing the power button.

It was a photograph.

Victoria was sprawled across my side of the king-sized bed in our master suite. She was wearing my silk dressing gown, her head resting on the embroidered linen pillows my mother had gifted us. In the corner of the frame, Dave's bare shoulder was visible, his arm casually draped over her waist.

Below the photo ran a four-word caption:

*Thanks for the upgrade.*

The screen went black.

The last pulse of fight inside me turned to gray ash. Ten years. Ten years of rebuilding a shattered life around a man who had treated me like an inconvenient insurance claim.

"Take her to Ward C," the intake nurse ordered, signing the admission slip. "Restricted visitor list. Husband’s orders."

The rubber wheels of the gurney squeaked across the polished linoleum floor, turning down a corridor lined with locked heavy doors.

Before they reached the security checkpoint, the heavy double glass doors of the main lobby blew open.

A sharp draft of ocean wind swept down the hallway.

A tall man in a tailored charcoal suit walked into the corridor, flanked by two private security officers and the facility’s chief medical director, who was practically jogging to keep pace.

The man stopped directly in front of my gurney.

He didn't glance at the paperwork. He didn't look at the attendants. He fixed his silver-gray eyes straight onto me, taking in the canvas straps pinned across my chest and dead legs.

"Mr. Beaumont," the medical director stammered, wringing his hands nervously. "We didn't expect you on site today. The board meeting isn't until Thursday—"

Henry cut him off with a single raised hand.

He stepped closer, towering over the metal frame of my gurney. His features were carved from old money and unyielding authority, the undisputed heir to the family that owned half the private clinics in the state.

"Who authorized them," Henry asked, his deep voice slicing through the sterile air like a scalpel, "to treat my patient as a lunatic?"
