Chapter 3

"Camila, are you sure about this?" Jeremy's voice cuts through the thick air, his tone tight with frustration. His eyes search mine for answers, but all I have are questions of my own.

The room feels suffocating under his gaze. I want to confess everything—Lucas's betrayal, my shattered trust—but instead, I remain frozen, unable to speak, trapped in the silence between us.

He runs a hand through his hair, frustration building in his movements. “I don’t get it, Camila. This—this whole marriage... it's not you. It’s not us. It’s not even real.”

"What do you want me to say, Jeremy?" My voice is hoarse, a mixture of fear and anger bubbling under the surface. "What can I say? You’ve already chosen her."

The words hit harder than I expect. Jeremy winces, a flicker of guilt crossing his face before he forces it away. It’s almost as if he’s afraid of what comes next, afraid of me.

"That’s not fair," Jeremy mutters, looking down, his jaw clenched. "You think I wanted any of this? Liliana? It’s not like that."

The lie hangs in the air between us, thick and suffocating. I can see it in his eyes, in the way his voice trembles. He’s been lying, not just to me but to himself. And I hate him for it.

"You don't get to tell me what's fair," I say, my words sharp, cutting through the tension like a blade. "You don’t get to make this right with a few apologies."

His face twists in frustration, but before he can respond, my phone buzzes, the screen lighting up with a name that makes my heart skip a beat: Lucas Carter.

"I have to go." My voice cracks slightly, but I force myself to stand tall, to look him in the eye. "This... whatever this is between us, it's over."

Jeremy doesn’t say anything. He watches as I walk toward the door, his gaze heavy on my back. For a moment, I wonder if he’ll stop me, but I don’t turn around. I can’t. Not now.

Lucas is waiting for me in the lobby, his tall frame leaning against the marble columns, his expression unreadable. There’s a dangerous calm about him, something I can’t quite place.

"You're late." His voice is low, but there’s a bite to it, as if he’s not used to being kept waiting.

I don’t answer right away. Instead, I study him, taking in the sharp cut of his suit, the dark eyes that seem to see right through me.

He’s a man of control, a man who knows how to make people bend to his will. And in this moment, I hate that he has this power over me.

"What exactly do you want from me, Lucas?" My voice trembles, but I don’t let it show. "You said you know everything about me—about my family. So, what’s your angle?"

Lucas looks at me with a smirk that doesn't reach his eyes. "I told you. I’m offering you an alliance. One that will protect your family and give you everything you need."

"Everything I need?" I scoff, shaking my head. "You mean your terms, your control."

He doesn’t flinch. Instead, he steps closer, his presence dominating the space between us. "What choice do you have, Camila? You're already in too deep. Jeremy, your family... none of them can protect you now."

"I don’t need protection," I snap. "I can take care of myself."

His eyes narrow, like he’s trying to decipher a puzzle. "Can you? Because the way I see it, you have two choices. Stay and fight a losing battle, or accept my help and watch everything fall into place."

My heart pounds in my chest, a battle raging inside me. I know he’s right. I know I’m backed into a corner with nowhere to turn. And yet, everything about him screams danger.

"What’s the catch?" I ask, my voice quieter now. "What do you want in exchange for this 'alliance' of yours?"

He leans in closer, his breath warm against my skin, sending a shiver down my spine. "I want your trust, Camila. I want you to rely on me. Completely."

His words hang in the air, a promise and a threat all in one. I want to recoil, but something in me—something deep and primal—wants to say yes, wants to lean into the safety he’s offering, even if I can’t trust him.

"And if I refuse?" I manage to whisper, trying to keep the fear from showing.

Lucas straightens, a shadow passing over his face. "Then everything you’ve worked for, everything you hold dear, will unravel. Slowly, but surely."

The chill in his voice sends a cold shudder through me. He’s not bluffing. And I’m not sure how much longer I can keep pretending that I have control over my own fate.

"You’re threatening me," I say, a thin edge to my voice.

His lips twitch in what might be a smile, but it doesn’t reach his eyes. "I’m offering you an opportunity. Don’t mistake it for a threat."

I stare at him, the weight of his words sinking in. This is it. The moment where everything changes. I can fight him, try to find another way out. Or I can accept his offer and throw myself into a dangerous game that I’m not sure I’m ready to play.

Before I can say anything more, my phone rings again, the name flashing on the screen sending a spike of anxiety through me: Liliana.

"I’ll be in touch," Lucas says, his voice smooth as silk, before he turns and walks away, leaving me with more questions than answers.

"What the hell do I do now?" I whisper to myself, staring at the screen of my phone, the weight of my choices bearing down on me.

And as I step into the night, I feel the first threads of my fate weaving together—threads that I may never be able to untangle.
