Chapter 4

The night was eerily quiet, save for the sound of Nathan’s restless pacing across his bedroom. Or, more precisely, her bedroom. The room still carried Arielle’s delicate scent, a mixture of lavender and something uniquely hers, now a ghostly reminder of the woman who had once shared his life.

But now, she was gone.

Nathan’s wolf was silent, curled up in the recesses of his mind, sulking and refusing to acknowledge him. The pain in his chest hadn't abated since Arielle’s parting words. It gnawed at him, clawed at his insides, making him feel raw and exposed.

He dropped onto the edge of the bed—the bed where he had betrayed her. The memory of Arielle catching him in the act made his gut twist painfully. He had expected anger, tears, or perhaps even a fiery confrontation. Instead, her calm, deliberate decision to leave had shattered him in a way he hadn’t thought possible.

Nathan ran a hand through his hair, his fingers trembling. His thoughts swirled, chaotic and relentless, until one image surfaced—his mother.

Evelyn’s voice came to him as clearly as if she were standing in the room.

"Nathan, listen to me. Arielle isn’t just anyone. She’s special. She’ll bring you peace and stability, things you desperately need."

At the time, Nathan had scoffed. He had just been rejected by Jennifer, his first love and supposed mate, who had left him to pursue her own ambitions. The sting of her betrayal had been fresh, and his mother’s insistence that he marry Arielle felt like an intrusion into his pain.

“Mom, you’re not serious,” Nathan had protested.

Evelyn had smiled weakly, her pale face framed by the pillow she rested on. “I am. Arielle has always been like a daughter to me. She deserves to be loved, to have a family. And you… you need someone who will see past your flaws and still stand by your side. Arielle is that person.”

He had dismissed her words then, attributing them to her deteriorating health. Evelyn had been terminally ill, and Nathan thought her request was just a desperate attempt to secure Arielle’s future. Reluctantly, and out of a sense of duty, he had agreed.

But now, sitting in the hollow emptiness of their home, Nathan realized his mother had been right all along.

Arielle had been his peace, his stability. He hadn’t seen it because he had been too blinded by his anger, his grief over Jennifer, and his own selfishness.

He leaned back, letting his head fall against the headboard. Memories of Arielle flooded his mind, each one more painful than the last.

He remembered the way she used to greet him every morning with a warm smile, no matter how distant or cold he had been. The meals she had prepared for him, even though he had often ignored them in favor of dining out with someone else. The way she had defended him to the pack, standing tall despite the whispers and humiliation she endured because of his behavior.

Arielle had loved him unconditionally. She had been patient, even when he gave her every reason to give up.

Nathan’s hands clenched into fists. He had never touched her. Not once. Not in the way a husband should have. He had told himself it was because she wasn’t his true mate, but deep down, he knew it was more than that. He had been afraid—afraid to let her in, to give her the power to hurt him like Jennifer had.

But instead of protecting himself, he had destroyed her.

He could still see the look in her eyes when she had walked in on him with Jennifer. There had been no anger, no tears—only a profound sadness, as if she had finally realized he was a lost cause.

Nathan’s wolf stirred, letting out a mournful whine.

“I know,” Nathan muttered, his voice hoarse. “I know I messed up.”

His mother’s words echoed in his mind again. “She’ll bring you peace and stability.”

Nathan let out a bitter laugh. “I don’t deserve peace.”

He stood abruptly, the need to move overtaking him. He left the house and shifted into his wolf form, the change bringing a brief respite from the heaviness in his chest.

He ran into the forest, his paws pounding against the earth. He didn’t know where he was going—he only knew he needed to run, to escape the suffocating guilt and regret that threatened to consume him.

But no matter how fast or far he ran, he couldn’t outrun the memories.

He remembered the nights Arielle had waited up for him, her eyes lighting up with hope every time he walked through the door, only for that hope to dim when he brushed past her without a word.

He remembered the little gestures of kindness she had shown him—the way she had mended his torn shirts, brought him coffee during long meetings, and left notes of encouragement on his desk.

And he remembered the bracelet she always wore, the one his mother had given her. Evelyn had loved Arielle fiercely, treating her as the daughter she never had. She had wanted them to be happy together, to build a life filled with love and trust.

Nathan stopped abruptly, his wolf’s breath coming in heavy pants. The pain in his chest intensified, and he let out a guttural howl that echoed through the forest.

His mother had trusted him to take care of Arielle, to cherish her as she deserved. But instead, he had broken her.

He collapsed onto the ground, his body trembling. His wolf whimpered, sharing in his anguish.

For the first time, Nathan allowed himself to feel the full weight of his actions. The betrayal, the neglect, the cruelty—he had been the cause of Arielle’s pain.

And now she was gone, taking with her the love and light he had taken for granted.

The realization was crushing. Nathan’s heart felt like it was being torn apart, the agony unbearable. He had always thought he didn’t need Arielle, that she was just an obligation.

But now, in her absence, he realized she had been everything.

And he had lost her.
