Chapter 5

Arielle gripped the steering wheel, her eyes locked on the winding road ahead. The salty breeze from the sea had done little to ease the heaviness in her chest. She had thrown the beads into the ocean, but the memories tied to them lingered, a chain she couldn’t quite break.

The road blurred as tears welled in her eyes again. She blinked them away, unwilling to let herself crumble further.

“This is freedom,” she whispered to herself. “This is what I wanted.”

But her heart didn’t believe it.

As she passed through a small town, a flicker of unease rippled through her. She glanced at the rearview mirror and noticed a black SUV trailing her. It wasn’t too close, but it had been there for the past hour, matching her turns and speed.

Shrugging it off as coincidence, she decided to stop at a diner on the town’s outskirts. The brightly lit sign and the promise of coffee seemed like a good distraction from her spiraling thoughts.

She parked her car, quickly scanning the lot. The SUV had parked a few spots away, but the tinted windows revealed nothing. Arielle’s instincts prickled, but she shook her head. Stop being paranoid.

Once inside, she settled into a booth and ordered coffee and pie. The warm aroma of fresh food offered a semblance of comfort, but the unease lingered.

Her focus sharpened when the door to the diner opened, and a group of people entered. They were a mix of men and women, all dressed casually but carrying an air of quiet authority. They didn’t order food. Instead, their eyes swept the room until they landed on her.

Arielle stiffened.

One of the men, a tall figure with piercing green eyes, approached her booth. The others followed, forming a semi-circle around her.

“Arielle,” the man said, his voice calm but firm. “It’s time to come with us.”

The air in the diner thickened, and Arielle’s heart pounded. “Who are you? What do you want?”

“We’re your family,” a woman with silver-streaked hair said gently. Her expression was soft, almost maternal. “You don’t know us, but we’ve been searching for you for a very long time.”

“Family?” Arielle’s voice wavered, disbelief cutting through her fear.

“You were taken from us when you were just a child,” the man explained. “Kidnapped. We’ve been looking for you ever since.”

Arielle shook her head. “No… no, that’s impossible. I was raised by Evelyn Johnson. She adopted me when I was five.”

“Yes,” another man said, his tone dark. “She took you from us.”

The words hit Arielle like a blow. “What are you talking about? Evelyn would never—”

“She wasn’t who you thought she was,” the silver-haired woman interrupted gently. “She used an enchanted bracelet to keep us from finding you. It masked your scent, your energy, everything that connected you to us.”

Arielle instinctively touched her wrist, where the bracelet Evelyn had given her had rested for years. She’d taken it off earlier that night, tossing it into the sea along with her pain and memories.

The woman nodded at Arielle’s reaction. “That’s why we’re here now. Without the bracelet, we were finally able to track you.”

Arielle’s world tilted. The bracelet—Evelyn’s gift, her most treasured possession—had been a cage. A barrier between her and a family she had never known.

“That’s not possible,” Arielle whispered, her voice barely audible.

“It is,” the green-eyed man insisted. “And we can prove it. But we need you to come with us. You’re not safe here.”

“Safe?” Arielle’s head spun. “From what?”

“From those who would use you for their own gain,” the silver-haired woman said. “Your lineage is powerful, Arielle. That’s why you were taken in the first place.”

Arielle’s breath caught. She wanted to reject their claims, to deny everything they were saying, but deep down, a part of her recognized the truth.

The strangers radiated familiarity, an unspoken connection she couldn’t explain.

“I…” she began, her voice faltering.

The green-eyed man extended his hand. “Please, Arielle. Let us help you.”

Arielle hesitated. The pain of the past few hours still clung to her, a sharp reminder of betrayal and loss. But now, a new truth loomed before her, one that could shatter everything she thought she knew about her life.

With a deep breath, she nodded and reached for the man’s hand.

As they left the diner, Arielle couldn’t help but glance back at the road she had come from. She thought of Nathan, of Evelyn, and the life she had left behind.

But now, a new path lay ahead—a path she never could have imagined.

They took her away from the original spot. The forest was vast and unending, its trees stretching toward the sky like silent sentinels. Arielle had run until her legs felt like they might give out, but she didn’t stop. The cool air stung her lungs, yet it also brought a strange sense of clarity. She didn’t know where she was going, but she didn’t care. Anywhere was better than the pain she had left behind.

When the dawn broke over the horizon, they stumbled into a clearing. Before her stood a packhouse unlike any she had seen before. It was grand yet understated, built from dark stone that seemed to blend seamlessly into the surrounding forest. The air here felt different, charged with a quiet energy that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end.

Before she could turn back, a towering figure emerged from the shadows.
