Chapter 3

The road stretched endlessly before Arielle, a dark ribbon cutting through the forest. Her tears had finally slowed, leaving her eyes puffy and her throat raw. She clutched the steering wheel tightly, her fingers trembling as she fought to keep herself together.

Nathan's betrayal replayed in her mind like a broken record, each repetition stabbing her heart anew. Yet amidst the chaos of her thoughts, a memory surfaced—one of the few that brought her comfort in this moment of despair.

It was a quiet afternoon years ago when Nathan’s late mother, Evelyn, had called Arielle into her study.

Evelyn had always been kind to her, treating Arielle as her own after bringing her into the family. On that particular day, Evelyn had handed her a delicate bracelet, its beads shimmering softly under the sunlight streaming through the window.

“Take this, my dear,” Evelyn had said, her voice warm and motherly. “This bracelet has a special purpose.”

Arielle had looked at her in confusion. “Special purpose?”

Evelyn nodded, her gaze tender yet serious. “If you ever find yourself in a moment when you and Nathan cannot find your way back to each other… when the pain becomes too much… pull the strings. Scatter the beads into the sea. Let them carry your sorrow away.”

Arielle had been stunned, unsure how to respond. “But why would I need this? Nathan and I…”

Evelyn had placed a gentle hand on hers, interrupting her. “My dear, love isn’t always easy, especially for someone like Nathan. He’s strong, stubborn, and sometimes blind to what’s right in front of him. But if the day comes when you feel you cannot bear the pain any longer, let this bracelet be your release. It will remind you that even when one chapter ends, the sea will carry you forward to another.”

At the time, Arielle had tucked the bracelet away, thinking she would never need it. She had believed in her love for Nathan, in their bond as Luna and Alpha. She had believed she could endure anything for him.

But now, with her world in shambles, the memory of Evelyn’s words brought her a strange sense of solace.

Arielle glanced down at her wrist, where the bracelet still rested. She had worn it faithfully since the day Evelyn gave it to her, a reminder of the woman who had been more of a mother to her than anyone else.

Her fingers brushed over the beads, their smooth surfaces grounding her as the pain in her chest threatened to overwhelm her once more.

She pulled the car to the side of the road again, her vision blurring with fresh tears.

Nathan had shattered her heart, but it wasn’t just his betrayal that hurt. It was the loss of the dream she had clung to for so long. The dream of being loved, of being cherished, of being enough.

With trembling hands, she slipped the bracelet off her wrist. She held it up to the moonlight, the beads catching the soft glow and reflecting it back at her.

“Is this what you meant, Evelyn?” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Is this the moment I’m supposed to let go?”

The forest was silent around her, save for the rustling of leaves in the breeze. Her wolf stirred uneasily within her, its sorrow mingling with her own.

Arielle opened the car door and stepped out, the cool night air biting at her skin. She walked a short distance to a small stream that cut through the woods, its gentle trickling sound soothing her frayed nerves.

She crouched by the water’s edge, clutching the bracelet tightly in her hand.

“This isn’t how it was supposed to be,” she murmured, her voice barely audible over the sound of the stream. “I loved him. I tried so hard…”

Her fingers tightened around the bracelet, the pain in her chest twisting like a knife.

But then she remembered Evelyn’s words again: “Let the beads carry your sorrow away.”

With a deep, shaky breath, Arielle pulled the strings, watching as the beads came loose and tumbled into the stream. They scattered across the surface before being carried away by the current, disappearing into the darkness.

It felt like a piece of her heart went with them.

She stayed by the stream for a long time, the cold seeping into her bones as the tears flowed freely once more.

But as the last bead disappeared, a strange sense of calm began to settle over her. It wasn’t the absence of pain—she doubted that would leave her anytime soon—but a small flicker of hope.

Evelyn had been right. The beads were her release. And though it hurt to let go, she knew it was the first step toward healing.

Arielle stood, brushing the dirt from her hands. She looked back at the stream one last time before turning toward her car.

She didn’t know where she was going, but she knew one thing for certain: she couldn’t go back.

The Arielle who had loved Nathan unconditionally, who had sacrificed everything for him, was gone.

Now, she needed to find out who she was without him.

As she drove away, the bracelet’s absence on her wrist felt strange, but also freeing.

And somewhere deep in the forest, her wolf howled—a sound of grief, but also of defiance.
