Chapter 2

The first message came on a Thursday morning. I was drinking coffee in the breakfast nook, scrolling through emails about a charity luncheon I was expected to attend. My phone buzzed. Unknown number. I almost deleted it without looking.

Then I opened it.

A photograph. Cain's hand—I knew it by the signet ring, the one his father gave him—resting on a pregnant belly. The background was dim but recognizable. Marea. The seafood place on Central Park South where Cain took his most important clients. The belly was round under a silk dress. Expensive fabric. The kind I used to design.

No text. Just the image.

My coffee went cold in my hand. I stared at the screen until the photo blurred. Then I took a screenshot. I opened a new email account I'd created two days ago—something anonymous, something Cain would never find. I uploaded the image to a cloud drive. Then I deleted the message from my phone.

I did not reply.

I set the phone face-down on the table. I finished my coffee. It tasted like metal. Cain came into the kitchen in his running gear, earbuds in, face flushed from his morning jog.

"Morning, beautiful." He kissed the top of my head. "You sleep okay?"

"Fine," I said. "You?"

"Like a rock." He grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. "I've got that conference call at ten, then lunch with the Steinberg group. Dinner at home?"

"Sounds good."

He smiled. He left. The apartment filled with silence.

I picked up my phone. I looked at the screenshot one more time. Then I locked the screen and went to get dressed.

Three days later, another message. Same unknown number. This time it was a screenshot of a text thread. Cain's name at the top. The messages were from two weeks ago, sent at 11:47 PM.

*Miss you, baby.*

*Can't wait to see you tomorrow.*

*I'll take care of everything. Don't worry.*

The replies were enthusiastic. Grateful. Intimate in a way that made my stomach turn.

I saved it. I uploaded it. I deleted it.

I was sitting at my vanity when Cain came home that night. He loosened his tie and came up behind me, hands on my shoulders.

"You look tense," he said. His reflection met mine in the mirror. "Everything okay?"

"Just tired."

"You've been tired a lot lately." His thumbs pressed into the muscles at the base of my neck. "Maybe we should get away for a weekend. Just the two of us. What do you think?"

"Maybe," I said.

He kissed my temple. "I love you, you know that?"

"I know."

He went to take a shower. I sat very still. I looked at my own face in the mirror. I barely recognized it.

The third message arrived a week later. This one was a video. Twenty-three seconds long. I was alone in the penthouse when I opened it. Cain was at the office. The housekeeper had Thursdays off.

I pressed play.

The guest suite in the Hamptons house. The wallpaper I'd chosen myself—soft gray with white botanical prints. Cain sitting on the edge of the bed, arm around Zaria's shoulders. She was laughing at something off-camera. He was smiling. Relaxed. Happy.

The video ended.

I watched it three more times. I saved it. I uploaded it. I deleted it.

Then I walked into the bathroom and vomited until there was nothing left.

I rinsed my mouth. I washed my face. I reapplied my lipstick. I had a meeting in an hour.

The immigration attorney's office was in Midtown, tucked into a building I'd never been to before. I'd gotten the referral from Sarah Chen, a college friend who'd moved to London years ago. The attorney's name was Philip Russo. He was in his fifties, gray at the temples, expensive suit, kind eyes.

"Mrs. Gordon," he said, shaking my hand. "Please, sit."

I sat. I crossed my ankles. I folded my hands in my lap.

"I understand you're interested in Italian residency," he said.

"Yes."

"May I ask why?"

"I'm considering a career move," I said. "Fashion. I used to design before I got married. There are opportunities in Milan and Rome I'd like to explore."

He nodded. He didn't ask about my husband. He didn't ask why I was doing this alone. He walked me through the process. Paperwork. Timelines. Requirements.

"It will take approximately three months," he said. "Possibly less if we expedite."

"Expedite it," I said.

He made a note. "I'll need some documents from you. Passport, birth certificate, proof of financial independence."

"I can provide all of that."

"Good." He looked up. "Mrs. Gordon, I have to ask. Does your husband know about this?"

"Not yet," I said. "And I'd appreciate your discretion."

"Of course." He slid a retainer agreement across the desk. "Everything we discuss is confidential."

I signed it. I wrote a check from my personal account—the one Cain never looked at because he assumed I used it for salon appointments and personal shopping.

I left the building and took a taxi to my bank.

The private wealth advisor's name was Margaret Liu. She'd managed my portfolio since before I married Cain. She knew exactly what assets I'd brought into the marriage and what I'd built on my own.

"Estella," she said warmly. "It's been a while. How are you?"

"I'm well," I said. "I need to make some changes to my portfolio."

"Of course. What are you thinking?"

"I want to liquidate everything," I said. "All of it. And I want it transferred to an offshore account in my name only."

Her expression didn't change, but something shifted in her eyes. Understanding, maybe. Or recognition.

"That's a significant move," she said carefully.

"I know."

"May I ask—"

"It's personal," I said. "And time-sensitive."

She nodded slowly. "It will take approximately two weeks to liquidate without raising flags. The offshore transfer can happen simultaneously."

"Perfect."

She pulled up my account on her screen. "You're looking at roughly $2.3 million, after taxes and fees."

"That's fine."

She printed the paperwork. I signed every page. My hand was steady.

"Estella," she said quietly, as I stood to leave. "If you need anything else—resources, referrals—you have my number."

"Thank you, Margaret."

I walked out into the October sunlight. The city moved around me—taxis, tourists, people with briefcases and coffee cups. I felt like a ghost moving through their world.

I went home. Cain was already there, tie loosened, jacket over the back of a chair.

"Hey," he said, smiling. "How was your day?"

"Busy," I said. "Yours?"

"Same. I'm starving. Want to order in?"

"Sure."

We ordered Thai food. We ate on the couch. He told me about a deal that was closing. I nodded in the right places. I laughed when he made a joke.

He fell asleep with his head in my lap, watching some documentary about architecture. I stroked his hair. I looked down at his face—handsome, familiar, completely at ease.

I felt nothing.

Two weeks later, Margaret called. "It's done," she said. "The funds are transferred. You should have access within twenty-four hours."

"Thank you," I said.

I hung up. I checked my new account on my phone. The balance loaded slowly, then all at once.

$2,347,892.16.

Mine. Only mine.

I closed the app. I looked out the window at the city below.

I was ready.
