Chapter 3

The storage unit was in Brooklyn. I took the subway because Cain tracked the car. I sat between a woman with grocery bags and a kid with headphones. Nobody looked at me. I was wearing jeans and a baseball cap. I looked like anyone.

The facility smelled like dust and motor oil. My unit was on the third floor. Number 347. I'd rented it six years ago when Cain suggested I take a break from work. He'd called it a break. A pause. Just until we got pregnant. Just until we had the baby. Just until.

I unlocked the door. I pulled it up. The metal screamed.

Boxes. Plastic bins. Garment bags on a rack. Everything I'd packed the day I became Mrs. Cain Gordon.

I found the portfolio in the back. Black leather. My initials embossed in gold. EAW. Estella Anne Williamson. My name before I gave it away.

I sat on the concrete floor. I opened it.

The first sketch was a structural evening gown. Black silk with geometric panels. I'd designed it at twenty-seven. Vogue had called it "architectural poetry." A actress wore it to the Golden Globes. I'd watched from my apartment, eating takeout, crying with happiness.

My hands shook. I pressed my palms flat against the paper.

I flipped through the pages. Charcoal drawings. Fabric swatches. Notes in my own handwriting. *Try this in ivory. Adjust the shoulder. Make it stronger.*

I'd been so sure of myself. So clear about what I wanted to build.

I took out my phone. I photographed every page. Every sketch. Every note. I uploaded them to the cloud drive. The same drive that held Cain's messages. His lies. His other life.

When I finished, I closed the portfolio. I held it against my chest. The leather was cool. Familiar. Mine.

I put it in the plain tote bag I'd brought. The one I'd tell Cain held charity auction items if he asked. He wouldn't ask. He never asked about my errands anymore.

I locked the unit. I took the subway home. The woman with the grocery bags was gone. The kid with the headphones was still there. He was asleep now. His head against the window.

I got off at my stop. I walked the four blocks to the penthouse. The doorman smiled. "Good afternoon, Mrs. Gordon."

"Afternoon, Marcus."

Cain was in his study when I got upstairs. I heard his voice through the door. Conference call. I went to the bedroom. I hid the portfolio in the back of my closet. Behind the winter coats. Behind the life I was about to burn down.

That night, I opened my laptop. I created a new email address. Secure. Anonymous. Nothing Cain could trace.

I wrote to Jace Burns.

We'd been friends since we were kids. Same neighborhood in Seattle. He'd carried my art supplies to school. He'd sat through every fashion show I put on in my garage. He'd written me a letter the night before I left for college. I'd never opened it. I'd met Cain that first semester. I'd forgotten about the letter. I'd forgotten about a lot of things.

Jace moved to Rome after grad school. He was an architect now. We emailed sometimes. Birthdays. Holidays. The kind of friendship that stayed warm even at a distance.

I typed: *Rome still treating you well? Asking for a friend who might need a quiet corner of the city for a while.*

I hit send. I closed the laptop. I waited.

He replied in an hour: *I know a place in Trastevere. It has good light and terrible plumbing. You'll love it.*

That was all. No questions. No pressure. Just a door, left open.

I stared at the screen. Something in my chest cracked. Not breaking. Loosening.

I wrote back: *Thank you.*

Two days later, I met Diane Holloway. Her office was in a building on Lexington. Nineteenth floor. Glass walls. View of the Chrysler Building.

She was in her fifties. Sharp suit. Sharper eyes. She shook my hand. Her grip was firm.

"Mrs. Gordon," she said. "Please, sit."

I sat. I crossed my legs. I folded my hands.

"I understand you need a divorce agreement," she said.

"Yes."

"And you want it structured in a very specific way."

"I want it binding upon signature," I said. "Regardless of the signatory's sobriety or awareness at the time of signing."

Her eyebrows lifted. Just slightly. "That's aggressive."

"That's necessary."

She leaned back in her chair. She studied me. "You understand the risk. If he challenges it—"

"He won't," I said. "Not in time."

"You sound very sure."

"I am."

She nodded slowly. "I'll draft it. It will take a week. Maybe less."

"I need it in three days."

She blinked. "Mrs. Gordon—"

"Three days," I said. "I'll pay double your rate."

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she picked up her pen. "Tell me everything."

I told her. Not about Zaria. Not about the baby. Not about the messages. Just the structure. The assets. The terms.

She took notes. She asked questions. She didn't ask why.

When we finished, she walked me to the door. "Estella," she said quietly. "This is going to work. But once you do this, there's no going back."

"I know," I said.

I left her office. I walked to the elevator. I pressed the button. The doors opened.

I stepped inside. I watched my reflection in the mirrored walls. I looked calm. Composed. Like a woman who had everything under control.

I smiled.

The doors closed.
