Chapter 1

After our engagement party, my grandma was taken to the police station. The person who filed the report was Harry’s personal attorney. Harry escorted her there himself and gave a full statement. In the end, he refused to settle things peacefully.

“Rosey’s necklace went missing,” he said. “Your grandma was the only one there from the countryside. If she didn’t take it, who else could it be?”

At that time, Rose shot me a smug look, clearly pleased with herself.

It was simply absurd. There was no evidence. Yet, just with just words from Rose, my grandma ended up detained.

“If the necklace doesn’t turn up, don’t let her out,” Harry added, then turned to me. “But this has nothing to do with us. The wedding’s still on next month, as planned.”

I looked down at the engagement ring on my finger.

Suddenly, I felt exhausted. Marriage didn’t feel necessary anymore.

——

Due to the Wallace Family's influence, my grandma was held at the station for fifteen full days. When she was finally released, her blood pressure spiked and she collapsed on the spot.

I rushed her to the hospital, but all I got back was the doctor’s words saying that my grandma had a massive blood loss during surgery. They couldn’t save her.

“Joy… I didn’t take it. I saw her—she threw the necklace into the flower vase…” said my grandma. “Call Harry… I’ll tell him this myself… He can’t go on thinking you had anything to do with it…”

Even with her last breath, she clung tightly to my hand, refusing to let go. Tears rolled down my face as I desperately dialed Harry to no end.

After countless rings, he finally picked up, he sounded more annoyed than concerned. “I’m juggling the company and the wedding and now you’ve been off the grid for two weeks? Do you even want to get married me?”

“Harry, please… can you come to the hospital? Grandma’s dying… I’m begging you…”

I didn’t care about pride anymore. I begged through tears with my voice shaking.

Harry was taken aback for a moment before answering, “…Fine. I’ve got a meeting first. Just wait for me.”

My grandma held on, barely breathing, from morning until night. My phone battery died from calling too many times, but even then Harry never came.

A kind nurse brought me a charger and chatted as she plugged it in.

“Did you hear? Mr. Wallace is throwing a celebration party for his lawyer up on the hillside tonight. It’s way more extravagant than the engagement party! I heard they’re even setting off fireworks all night. Can you imagine?”

Grandma heard it too. Her eyes flickered like she understood everything.

She patted my hand gently, the way she did when I was little.

“Sweet girl… I had dragged you into this mess.” She added, “There’s a pair of gold bracelets from your mother… I put them under your pillow. Don’t fight with Harry. Don’t let this delay the wedding…”

Her hand slipped from mine as the monitor screamed and her heartbeat line flattened.

I collapsed in sobs by her hospital bed. Behind me, fireworks exploded across the sky in a beautiful display.

My phone lit up again. A news alert flashed across the screen: a photo of Harry with his arm around Rose, whispering in her ear, the perfect couple.

I gripped Grandma’s hand tightly, refusing to let go. “Grandma… please wake up… I don’t want to marry him anymore… I’m not marrying him…”

I’d met Harry right after his last engagement fell apart. His fiancée had left for a new life overseas and he was drowning his sorrows at a bar. I handed him a bottle and he downed it.

Thanks to him, I made about forty thousand crowns that night.

As I got up to leave at dawn, he grabbed my sleeve tightly. “Tell me how to forget her,” he pleaded. “Please… help me forget.”

Maybe it was the money. Maybe it was something else. But when college let out for summer, I brought him back to Grandma’s house in the countryside.

There’s an old saying: You do something long enough and it gets stuck in your head—even in your sleep.
