Chapter 6

Salvatore stared at me, disbelief written all over his face. His signet ring, which he had been turning slowly with his thumb since the moment Serafina began speaking, went completely still. The cessation of that small, habitual motion was louder than a gunshot to anyone who knew him. His jaw tightened, and when he spoke, his voice carried the low, controlled edge of a man whose authority had just been publicly destabilized in his own house.

"Bianca, have you completely lost your mind?"

"Based on Serafina's claim and a single, questionable blood report, you're willing to just hand Liliana over?"

My mother-in-law, Elena Moretti, stepped forward from the periphery where she had been watching with the patient stillness of a woman who had survived three decades inside this family by seeing everything and reacting to nothing. Her fingers found the rosary at her wrist, and she rolled a single bead between finger and thumb before saying anything at all.

"Yes, Bianca, this is too big a decision to make without a proper investigation," she said, her voice tinged with concern but measured, always measured, the voice of a dowager who understood that words spoken before witnesses in this house became facts of record.

Faced with their doubts, the weight of every gaze in the ballroom pressing against me like the walls of a confessional, I replied with quiet certainty. I did not raise my voice. I did not need to. The truth, in this family, had always been its own kind of weapon.

"Liliana is, without a doubt, her daughter."

I drew a breath that tasted of gardenias and old wood and the faint metallic thread of fear that always lived beneath the surface of Moretti gatherings.

"I saw it with my own eyes all those years ago. The babies were switched."

My words hung in the air, leaving everyone in stunned silence. The chandeliers above seemed to burn a shade colder. I could feel the room recalculating, every associate and allied family member reassessing the last eighteen years of what they thought they knew about the Moretti household, about Salvatore's bloodline, about me.

Salvatore was beside himself, panic overtaking his features in a way I had never seen, not when rivals threatened his territory, not when the feds circled the Family's shipping fronts, not even when the Commission questioned his judgment. This was different. This was the floor of his private world cracking open beneath his feet.

"That's impossible! You were in such a weakened state after the delivery that you nearly bled out!"

His voice broke upward, losing the iron control that was the signature of a Don who commanded silence simply by entering a room. The bodyguards stationed along the ballroom walls shifted their weight, uneasy, unsure whether this was a moment that required their intervention or their deliberate blindness.

"You said this child meant more to you than your own life. If you cared that much, how could you have just stood by and let her suffer?"

"You're lying!"

I turned to Salvatore, my gaze unwavering. I looked at the man I had married in a cathedral draped in white roses while soldiers stood guard at every exit, the man whose ring I wore, whose name I carried, whose house I had kept immaculate and silent and loyal for nearly two decades. I spoke with quiet conviction.

"When I gave birth, I saw a butterfly-shaped birthmark on our child's lower back. If you want proof, just check. It's there."

At the mention of my words, Elena Moretti moved with a swiftness that belied her age. She crossed the distance to Arianna in three decisive strides, her rosary beads clicking faintly against her wrist, and lifted my daughter's shirt to check.

The ballroom held its breath.

The moment she saw the butterfly-shaped bloodline mark on the lower back, the proof written on skin that no document could forge and no lie could erase, Elena's hand trembled once and then went rigid. She said nothing. Her silence said everything.

Salvatore's eyes went bloodshot with fury.

Without a second thought, he stormed toward me, closing the distance between us in two strides that made the nearest soldiers flinch, and slapped me hard across the face.

The sound cracked through the ballroom like a pistol report. My head snapped to the side. I tasted copper. The chandeliers blurred, then steadied. No one moved. No one breathed.

"Bianca, are you even human?!"

"If you knew the truth all along, why didn't you tell us sooner? Why let our daughter suffer under Serafina all these years?!"

His rage was like wildfire and the fury in his gaze felt like it could burn through me. He stood over me with his hand still raised, his chest heaving, and in that moment he was not the measured Don who turned his signet ring and made men disappear with a word. He was a man whose bloodline had been desecrated, whose house had been built on a lie, and whose wife had watched it happen in silence for eighteen years.

Relatives joined in, their voices filled with condemnation, rising from every corner of the ballroom like a verdict delivered by a jury of silk and old money.

"Is Bianca out of her mind? This child is a Moretti, her own flesh and blood! How could she watch her daughter suffer for all these years without lifting a finger?"

"She's heartless! She knew the truth, yet stood by while her child's leg was broken, allowing her to endure a life worse than death!"

"Salvatore, you need to cast her out immediately! A woman like this doesn't deserve you, let alone a place in the Moretti Family!"

The accusations came in a relentless tide and every pair of eyes turned to me, their gazes thick with contempt and disgust. I stood in the center of that beautiful, terrible room, the taste of blood on my lip, the heat of the blow still radiating through my cheekbone, and I let them come. Every word. Every judgment. I had earned the right to stand in this fire. I had spent eighteen years building it.

Even my timid, fragile daughter, Arianna, locked eyes with me. Her thumbnail finally released the crescent wound on her palm. Her gaze was filled with tears, wide and shattered, the gaze of a child who had been broken in every way a child could be broken and who had just learned that the one person who could have saved her had chosen not to. She screamed, "I hate you!"

The words hit harder than Salvatore's hand.

Without another word, she turned and leaped from the window behind her.

The sharp thud that echoed from below sent a jolt of shock through everyone in the room. The sound was final and absolute, the sound of something irreversible meeting stone. For one suspended instant, no one moved. Then the screaming started.

Tears blurred my vision, streaming down my face.

It was over… finally, everything had come to an end.
