For a decade, she has survived as a nameless rogue healer, masking her scent to protect her dying father—ever since Sylas Montgomery's pack poisoned her wolf during their mating ceremony. But the moment Sylas strides into the Summit Pack estate with his new mate, Raquel, one breath of her hidden essence shatters her disguise. The suppressant wash fails, and the Alpha's instincts awaken. Now, with her secret unraveling, she must navigate a lethal game of forbidden desire and vengeance, where the lost mate bond may become her deadliest weapon.

After My Mate Poisoned My Wolf at Our Ceremony Chapter 1

The bitter taste of charcoal and crushed mint was still on my tongue when Sylas Montgomery caught my scent at precisely 8:14 on a Saturday evening.

I was carrying a stainless-steel tray of sedative ampoules down the service corridor of the neutral Summit Pack estate. My hair was pulled back tight. My gray scrubs marked me as hired help—an anonymous rogue healer scraping together cash to keep my father alive.

Then the double doors swung open.

Sylas stepped into the hall with Raquel draped over his arm. She smelled of white lilies and fresh-pressed silk, her hand resting over the diamond cuff on his wrist. Ten years had sharpened him into a celebrated Alpha, broad-shouldered and untouchable.

I kept my chin down. My suppressant wash should have made me smell like sterile gauze and rain water. But as they drew parallel, a sharp draft pulled between us. A single ghost of wild jasmine slipped through my mask.

Sylas stopped dead in his tracks.

His dark eyes snapped sideways, locking onto the crown of my head before I could turn into the pantry. "Wait here," he murmured to Raquel.

I ducked into the stone alcove by the laundry chute, but his shadow cut off the light before I could close the door.

His Alpha aura rolled in behind him, thick and suffocating as wet wool.

*"Kneel,"* he said.

He didn't raise his voice. He used the Alpha tone like an afterthought, soft and conversational.

My knees hit the slate floor with a crack. The phantom mark on the side of my neck—dead and ice-cold for a decade—seared with sudden, phantom agony. It felt as if someone had driven a heated nail through old scar tissue.

Sylas leaned down, looking at me. He smiled that slow, familiar curl of his lip—the look of a man testing an old tool to confirm it still obeyed his hand.

"You look well, Juliette," he said smoothly. "For a rogue."

Pain tore through my throat, but I bit the inside of my cheek until the copper blood washed away the burn. I didn't beg. I didn't look away. Planting one palm against the cold stone, I forced my boots underneath me and hauled myself back onto my feet. My spine clicked straight against the crushing weight of his aura.

His smile thinned. He smoothed the cuff of his suit, taking half a step back.

"Your father’s condition is worsening," Sylas said quietly. "His wolf-sickness has reached the lungs. I've been following his case."

He let the threat hang in the air, turned on his heel, and strolled back toward the ballroom.

I stood in the dark alcove, my fingers gripping the metal supply tray so hard the edges bit through my skin.

By midnight, I was back in our upstate cabin.

The room smelled of dry pine and fever. I pressed my fingers against my father's wrist, watching the pulse jump. Forty-two beats per minute. Shallow, ragged breaths rattled in Calvin's chest. The severed pack bond was eating away at his heart muscle day by day.

He opened one cloudy brown eye and offered a tired grin. "Stop staring at me like an autopsy report, Jules."

"You skipped your evening tincture," I said, keeping my voice steady.

"Tastes like boiled bark." He closed his eyes, his breathing heavy. "Not worth the bother."

I turned to the kitchen counter to grind fresh willow bark and wolfsbane antidote. My hands shook against the ceramic pestle. It was the first time they had trembled in five years.

Deep behind my ribs, in the frozen dark where Solène had slept since Sylas’s syringe silenced her, something shifted. It wasn't a roar. It was just a faint, hot twitch—like a coal catching air beneath gray ash.

I froze, my hand hovering over the stone bowl. The silence closed back in immediately.

I didn't name it. I didn't dare to. I just pulled the thick wool blanket over Calvin's shoulders, latched the wooden shutters against the rising full moon, and sat beside his cot until dawn.

Thirty-six hours later, an unmarked black SUV pulled up to our gravel driveway.

Petra Dunne, Ironveil's senior healer, stepped out holding an insulated medical case. Inside were six glass ampoules of distilled moonseed extract—high-grade pack medication that no rogue clinic on the East Coast had the license to stock.

Before Petra could even set the case on Calvin's table, my phone rang with a private number.

I answered. Sylas's voice came through the speaker, warm and measured. It was that generous, merciful tone I had learned to dread far more than his temper.

"Petra has enough moonseed to stabilize Calvin's heart," Sylas said. "He needs supervised pack-healer infusions every twelve hours. I will provide them, Juliette. For as long as he lives."

"What do you want, Sylas?"

"A simple life-debt," he replied, unhurried. "You will serve as an Omega in the pack house. You will attend the banquet hall and clean the floor you used to covet. Calvin stays alive as long as you do your duties. If you walk away, Petra walks away."

A collar dressed up as charity. Calvin's dying lungs were the chain.

I looked at my father's pale, sunken face on the pillow, then back at the glass ampoules.

"I accept the terms," I said, voice flat as glass. "Under one condition. I want Petra’s full medical schedule signed and registered with an elder of the neutral Summit Pack before I cross your boundary line."

The line went silent. Just for one beat.

He hadn't expected me to demand a legal paper trail. If he backed out, he would look like a monster in front of his own head healer.

"Agreed," Sylas murmured.

At three that afternoon, I stepped out of a cab in front of the Ironveil pack house.

The two perimeter guards waved a scent scanner over my collar. The suppressant held completely; the scanner light blinked green for inert rogue.

Up on the wide stone porch, Raquel Patterson was waiting.

She wore an emerald silk coat, her blonde hair pinned high. Her eyes traveled down my gray travel coat and locked onto the bare hollow of my neck—right onto the dead, pale scar where Sylas had rejected me a decade ago.

Raquel’s right hand moved involuntarily. Her fingers pressed against her own throat, touching the mark beneath her collar, checking the bond she knew had never carried a true mate-scent pull.

Our eyes met for two seconds. Cold, silent, venomous.

Then she turned and walked through the front doors, leaving them open.

I hoisted the strap of my leather kit over my shoulder and walked inside. I didn't look at the chandeliers or the polished hardwood. My eyes were fixed on the locked door at the end of the lower hallway—the pack records vault, where Sylas kept every archived intelligence file from the year he drove me out.
