Chapter 3

The lobby had a smell to it—lemon polish over old carpet—that I noticed only because it clashed so badly with the second smell underneath it. Cigarettes. Cheap cologne. I knew that smell before I turned around.

"There she is." Christopher's voice carried across the marble like he owned the place. He had on a leather jacket that still had the tag creases in it, brand new, paid for with somebody else's money. "Look at you. Big shot now."

I stopped walking. My badge was still in my hand, halfway to the scanner.

Aniyah came at me fast, arms already open, and I didn't have time to step back before she had me. Her perfume was thick enough to choke on. "My baby," she said, loud, for the lobby, for the security guard, for anyone watching. Her voice cracked right on cue. "My baby girl, look how far you've come."

Then, low, right against my ear, so only I could hear it: "Ten thousand. By Friday. Or we call every paper in this city and tell them what kind of childhood the Grant boy's wedding planner really had."

I didn't move. I didn't hug her back. I stood there with my arms at my sides like a mannequin being dressed by someone else's hands, and I looked over her shoulder at the elevator bank, counting the seconds until the doors opened.

"We saw you in the paper," Christopher said, stepping closer, dropping the performance now that the tears were doing their job. "Big wedding. Grant money. You could spare something for your own father."

"I'm not your ATM," I said. Quiet. Flat.

"You're our daughter." Aniyah pulled back just enough to look wounded, mascara already smudging theatrically at the corner of one eye. "We raised you."

"You sold me," I said. "There's a difference."

That was when Levi appeared, stepping between us like he'd been standing three feet away the whole time, which he probably had. "Ma'am, sir, I'm going to need you to step outside." His voice was even, but there was steel under it I hadn't heard before.

"Who's this?" Christopher sneered.

"Security's on the way." Levi already had his phone to his ear. "You can wait for them out here, or you can leave now."

Aniyah tried one more time, reaching for my hand. I pulled it back before she made contact.

"Friday," Christopher said over his shoulder as Levi walked them toward the doors. "Ten thousand, or the whole world hears about it."

The doors closed behind them. The lobby went quiet except for the hum of the fluorescent lights.

Levi came back to where I stood, still holding my badge in a hand that had gone stiff. "You okay?"

"I'm fine." I scanned my badge. It beeped green. "Thank you for that."

He didn't push. He just walked me to the elevator and rode up with me in silence, which was its own kind of mercy.

---

Three days went by. No calls from tabloids. No follow-up texts demanding money. I told myself it didn't matter either way—I wasn't paying, and there was nothing they could print that would cost me anything I still valued.

On the fourth day, Clara caught me in the hallway outside the conference room, a folder pressed to her chest like she was holding something fragile.

"You didn't hear this from me," she said, "but I got a call from a contact at the DA's office. Your parents." She said it carefully, watching my face. "They were picked up yesterday. Fraud. Extortion. Some old child endangerment charges that got reopened."

I kept my pen against the seating chart in front of me, the tip resting on a table marked *Robinson family, west wing.*

"Apparently they tried to shake down a very wealthy man for a very large sum," Clara went on. "Threatened to go to the press with some story about his fiancée's wedding planner." She tilted her head. "That's you, in case that wasn't clear."

"It was clear," I said.

"The man had a whole legal team build a case overnight. Handed it straight to the prosecutors, evidence and everything. Whoever he is, he moved fast." She shook her head, almost admiring. "Anyway. Thought you should know before you heard it somewhere worse."

She left. I sat there for a moment with the pen still touching paper, not moving.

I knew who it was. There was only one man with that kind of legal team who had any reason to care what happened to my name.

I waited for something to rise in my chest—gratitude, maybe, or the old ache that used to come whenever he did something that reminded me of who he used to be. I waited, and nothing came. No warmth. No sting. Just a strange, clean stillness, like a rope that had been dragging behind me for years had finally been cut, and I hadn't even felt the moment it happened.

I didn't call him. I didn't send a message. There was nothing to say that would mean anything now.

I looked back down at the seating chart. Moved the Hendersons from table nine to table twelve, away from the bar. Wrote a note in the margin about the centerpiece heights blocking sightlines.

Then I kept working, because that was the only thing left that made sense to do.
