Chapter 4

The flowers arrived on a Tuesday. White peonies, two dozen, with a card that said *Urgent question re: ceremony arch placement.* I photographed them, forwarded the photo to Dana at the vineyard with a note about arch dimensions, cc'd Sawyer, and had Levi drive the arrangement to Seattle Children's Hospital before noon.

Wednesday it was a phone call at seven-forty AM. A question about the cake cutting order.

Thursday, a question about parking flow.

Friday, he tried to cancel the string quartet entirely. I reinstated them within the hour, sent the confirmation to Sawyer, and filed the incident under *vendor disruptions* in my project log.

I kept every email thread clean. Every response professional. Every cc deliberate.

He was building a paper trail of reasons to see me. I was building a paper trail of reasons he didn't need to.

---

The call came at eleven-seventeen on a Wednesday night. I was still at my desk, running the day-of timeline for the third time, moving the toast schedule back four minutes to account for the orchestra setup.

His name on my screen. I let it ring twice. Then I answered.

"Ms. Sanders." His voice was wrong from the first syllable. Too tight. Too careful, the way a person sounds when they're holding something together with both hands.

"Mr. Grant. What can I help you with?"

A long pause. I heard him breathe.

Then it cracked. Just slightly. The sound of a man whose composure had been running on fumes for weeks and finally hit empty. "I just—" His voice broke. He didn't finish the sentence. I could hear him trying.

I looked at my screen. The cursor blinked on an empty cell.

"Mr. Grant," I said, "I recommend speaking with your fiancée about any emotional concerns. Is there anything else regarding the day-of timeline?"

Silence.

"Goodnight," I said, and hung up.

I sat there for a moment after. The office was empty. The city outside the window was doing what cities do at midnight—glowing, indifferent, ongoing. I turned back to my screen and moved the toast schedule back four minutes.

---

The rehearsal was a Friday afternoon, golden light slanting long across the vineyard rows. I had my clipboard, my earpiece, my timeline printed in triplicate. Levi handled the catering crew. Dana handled the bridal party. I handled everything else.

Dominic walked the ceremony aisle three times and got it wrong twice. Not because he didn't know how to walk. Because he kept looking for me.

I stayed on the far side of the tent and kept my eyes on my clipboard.

After the run-through, when the wedding party drifted toward the dinner tables and the catering staff started lighting candles, I slipped around to the back of the rehearsal tent to check the generator placement. I heard him before I saw him.

"Eliana."

I kept writing. *Generator placement—confirm backup cable route.*

His hand closed around my wrist.

Not hard. But certain. Like he'd made a decision about it.

I stopped writing. I looked at his hand first—fingers wrapped around my wrist, knuckles pale, a small tremor in them he probably didn't know was visible. Then I looked up at his face.

He looked wrecked. That was the only word for it. Five years of Manhattan polish stripped down to something raw and desperate underneath, eyes red at the edges, jaw tight like he was biting down on something he couldn't say.

"Why won't you even be angry?" His voice came out low and ragged. "Scream at me. Hate me. Anything." His grip tightened, just slightly. "Just stop looking at me like I don't exist."

The tent canvas shifted in the breeze. Somewhere behind us, someone laughed at the dinner table, and glasses clinked.

I looked down at his hand on my wrist. Then back up at his face.

"The rehearsal dinner begins in eleven minutes," I said. "Please release my wrist, Mr. Grant."

He let go.

I walked away. Clipboard in hand, pen already moving, pace even.

Behind me, I heard nothing. No footsteps. He was still standing there. I didn't turn around to check.

---

Levi drove me back to the hotel after dinner. The city blurred past the windows, quiet at this hour, the kind of quiet that sits on you.

He pulled into the hotel lot and put the car in park. Didn't say anything for a moment. Just let the engine idle.

Then: "You don't have to be unbreakable every second." His voice was soft. No pressure in it. "Not around me."

I had my clipboard in my lap. I looked at it. Then I looked at him.

His face in the low light was just—steady. That was the thing about Levi. He was always just steady. No agenda in it. No performance.

Something moved behind my eyes. I didn't let it get any further than that.

"Goodnight, Levi," I said.

I got out. Closed the door.

Inside, I walked to my room and stood with my back against the door for a moment longer than I needed to. The hallway was empty. The carpet was beige. The ice machine hummed somewhere down the corridor.

I stood there, and I breathed, and I let exactly thirty seconds pass.

Then I pushed off the door, set my clipboard on the desk, and opened my laptop.

The day-of timeline was waiting. I had four minutes to find somewhere.
