Chapter 3

Evelyn's POV

I tossed the plastic bottle onto the granite kitchen island. It skittered across the surface, hitting Grant’s coffee mug with a sharp clack.

"Explain this," I demanded.

Grant paused mid-pour, the glass coffee pot hovering over his mug. He picked up the bottle, squinting at the label under the recessed lighting. "Prenatal vitamins. Celeste needs them for the baby."

"The manufacturing date stamped on the bottom is exactly two years ago," I pointed out, crossing my arms over my chest. "You were stranded on an uncharted atoll for five years. Did a fully stocked pharmacy wash ashore?"

Grant’s jaw tightened for a fraction of a second before he smoothed his expression into a mask of pure innocence. He tossed the bottle back onto the granite. "It was in the emergency ration pack."

"The Coast Guard drops folic acid for castaways?"

"They drop standard medical kits, Evelyn," he snapped, his voice rising in volume. "Stop acting paranoid."

"I am looking at a pristine safety seal that somehow survived a shipwreck and a tropical climate."

He stepped closer, towering over me. "You are losing your grip. I just got back from the dead. Instead of welcoming me, you interrogate me over a bottle of vitamins. You need help."

"Celeste is carrying your child," I said, refusing to back down. "If those pills are two years old, she either brought them on the raft, or your entire survival story is a fabricated lie."

"She found them in the wreckage," Grant shot back. "You are twisting everything to make me the villain."

"I do not have to twist anything. The barcode proves it."

"I survived," he countered, grabbing his mug. "That is the only timeline that matters."

He walked out of the kitchen, leaving the bottle between us like a loaded weapon.

An hour later, I stepped out of the elevator at Adler Enterprises. My assistant, Chloe, practically sprinted toward me, clutching her tablet tight against her chest.

"He is in the main conference room," Chloe rushed out, her voice frantic. "He bypassed security at the front desk and called an emergency executive meeting."

"Without my authorization?"

"He told the guards he was the founder. They did not know how to stop him."

I bypassed my office and marched straight down the glass corridor. Through the transparent walls, I saw Grant sitting at the head of the mahogany table. Marcus and David sat rigidly on either side of him, looking extremely uncomfortable.

I pushed the heavy oak door open.

"David, run the numbers on a public offering," Grant instructed the CFO, leaning forward on his elbows. "We need capital to expand the east coast operations. My return changes the operational structure."

"David will do no such thing," I interrupted, stepping into the room.

The executives flinched. Grant offered a patronizing smile.

"Evelyn, sweetheart," he said, gesturing to an empty leather chair. "I built this firm from the ground up. The board needs real leadership right now."

I walked over to the wall panel, flipped the master switch, and plunged the room into darkness. The overhead projector died instantly. The smart blinds rolled up, letting in the harsh morning sunlight.

"Meeting adjourned," I announced to the room.

Grant stood up, gripping the edge of the table. "You cannot just cut the power. I am the founder of this company."

I pulled a thick, manila envelope from my briefcase and dropped it directly in front of him. "These are the absolute majority ownership filings. They were legally binding and finalized yesterday morning."

Grant glared at the thick stack of papers.

"I hold ninety-two percent of the voting shares," I continued, keeping my voice dead flat. "You hold nothing."

Marcus cleared his throat and stood up quickly. "She is right, Grant. Evelyn owns Adler Enterprises completely."

"Get out of my building," I told my husband. "Before I have security physically escort you out."

Grant stared at the documents, his face flushing dark red. He shoved past me, his shoulder clipping mine as he stormed out into the hallway.

In my office, a man sat on the leather sofa, casually flipping through a trade magazine.

"Security is getting terribly sloppy," I said, leaving the door wide open.

He tossed the magazine onto the glass coffee table and stood. "Your security is fine. I just know how to bypass a standard magnetic lock."

He pulled a leather wallet from his inner pocket and flipped it open. "Noah Reed. Maritime Fraud Division, Global Alliance Insurance."

I studied the investigator credentials. "The yacht crash was ruled an accident five years ago. The payout went straight to the creditors to cover the debts."

"The standard payout did," Noah corrected, slipping the wallet away. He reached into his coat and produced a folded document, smoothing it out on my desk. "But I am not here about the standard corporate liability coverage."

I looked down at the paper. It was a life insurance policy.

"One week before your husband took that yacht out into a tropical storm," Noah said, tapping a silver pen against the signature line, "he purchased a private, offshore accidental death policy. Payout: twenty million dollars."

"Twenty million?" I repeated, my stomach dropping. "I never saw a single dime of this money."

"Because the beneficiary was a Cayman Islands shell company called Apex Holdings," Noah explained. "It was registered through a proxy, and that proxy moved the twenty million thirty days after the Coast Guard suspended the search. We are still tracing who controlled the proxy."

I stared at Grant's signature on the bottom of the page. The sweeping 'G' and sharp 'A' were unmistakable.

"He planned the crash," I concluded, the realization turning my blood to ice. "He faked his death, took the twenty million, and left me to deal with the ten million in corporate debt."

"And now he is back, playing the miracle survivor for the press," Noah added, crossing his arms. "My agency wants that money returned. I suspect you want your husband ruined. We have a mutual interest."

"You want me to help you prove he committed federal fraud."

"I want you to give me access to his personal financial archives from the year he disappeared," Noah said. He pulled a second sheet of paper from his pocket and pushed it toward me. "An authorization form. Sign it, and I can start ripping his castaway alibi apart."

Before I could reach for the pen, the intercom on my desk buzzed loudly.

I hit the speaker button. "Yes, Chloe?"

"Ms. Adler," Chloe said, her voice frantic over the static. "Your husband is in the main lobby."

"Tell security to remove him."

"I cannot. He brought three camera crews and a dozen reporters inside with him. He is telling them you are trying to steal his company while he recovers from trauma."

The lobby feed on my computer monitor flickered to life. Grant stood by the security turnstiles, a microphone in his hand, looking perfectly distressed for the cameras. He wiped a fake tear from his eye.

Noah tapped the authorization form with his index finger.

"He is building his narrative," Noah said, his tone urgent. "Sign the paper, Evelyn."

I picked up the fountain pen.
