Chapter 4

Evelyn's POV

I signed Noah Reed's authorization form and slid it back across my desk.

"You have access to Grant's pre-disappearance financial archives," I said. "Find the Cayman accounts and the person behind Apex Holdings."

Noah folded the document into his coat. "I will. But first, you have a problem in the lobby. Grant brought cameras."

The elevator doors opened onto a wall of flashes.

Grant stood between the security turnstiles with one arm around Leo. Microphones crowded his face.

"My wife kept Adler Enterprises alive during an impossible period," he told the reporters. "But I founded this company. Now that I am home, I intend to resume an active leadership role."

A reporter called, "Will Evelyn step down as CEO?"

Grant gave the camera a practiced smile. "Evelyn and I are family. We will decide what is best together."

I walked into the lobby before he could say more.

"Grant," I called brightly.

I passed Chloe near the elevators. Without looking at me, she murmured, "The board did not authorize any statement about him returning as CEO. Marcus is watching the live feed."

"Good," I said under my breath. "Keep it live."

Every camera swung toward me.

I took his hand, smiling hard enough to make my cheeks ache. "Your return has inspired all of us. In fact, the board and I have already discussed the perfect role for you."

His fingers tightened around mine.

"Adler Enterprises is launching the Adler Maritime Rescue Foundation," I told the press. "It will fund search-and-rescue training, emergency communications, and survivor support. We are seeding it with five million dollars, and Grant will serve as its honorary president."

The room exploded with questions.

"Will the foundation be part of Adler Enterprises?"

"Will Mr. Adler oversee corporate operations too?"

"Is this a reconciliation announcement?"

I answered the only question that mattered. "The foundation will have a separate charter, separate accounts, and independent oversight. Grant's role will be public-facing and philanthropic. Adler Enterprises remains under its current executive structure."

Several business reporters immediately began typing. The distinction was now on camera, in public, and impossible for Grant to reinterpret later.

Grant's smile never moved, but his eyes went flat. "Honorary president?" he murmured.

"You wanted a title," I whispered. "Now you have one that does not come with voting authority."

He pulled me into a rigid embrace for the cameras. "My brilliant wife. Always thinking ahead."

"Smile," I said against his cheek. "They are still filming."

Thirty minutes later, he cornered me beside my car in the executive garage.

"A charity?" His public warmth vanished. "You are trying to turn me into a mascot."

"I am keeping you away from my boardroom."

"My boardroom. I built the client list. I raised the first round of capital."

"And then you bought a twenty-million-dollar accidental-death policy before your yacht disappeared."

He went still.

For the first time since his return, the arrogance slipped.

"I do not know what you are talking about."

"Global Alliance Insurance does. So does Noah Reed. They are tracing Apex Holdings now."

Grant glanced toward the garage cameras. "You think a stack of ownership papers makes you untouchable?"

"No. Staying out of federal prison helps."

His jaw tightened. "You are a mother who is about to lose her son."

"Leave Leo out of this."

"He asked me this morning why you hate me. He asked why you want to throw his unborn sibling onto the street." Grant stepped closer. "Give me a path back into management by Friday, or I file for custody and let Leo tell a judge how controlling you have become."

"You have no job, no separate home, and a pregnant mistress."

"I have a five-year survival story and a son who has spent half his childhood worshipping a dead father." His smile returned. "Public sympathy has won harder cases than mine."

"Custody is not a popularity contest."

"No, but reputation matters before a case ever reaches a judge. You know that better than anyone."

He glanced at my office tower above us. "You built a company on people trusting you. I can make them wonder whether the woman in charge is stable enough to keep it."

"And I can make discovery very uncomfortable for a man who vanished with ten million dollars in debt."

That wiped the smile from his face again.

He walked away before I could answer.

I stayed beside the car until my hands stopped shaking.

Noah emerged from between two concrete pillars.

"He is escalating," he said.

"You heard that?"

"Not the whole thing. But I did pull something from the fleet SUV he borrowed this morning." Noah held out a small encrypted audio player. "He paired his phone with the company vehicle. The hands-free system cached part of a call before he disconnected it from the fleet account. Chloe preserved the file."

"Can we use it?"

"Maybe not in court. For now, use it to understand him. The fleet policy gives the company rights to its own telematics data, but I am not building a prosecution around a cached call. I am building leads."

"Then let us see where the lead goes."

I pressed play.

Grant's voice filled the garage over the faint hum of an engine.

"Keep crying for the nurses, Celeste. Play fragile. Evelyn is angry, but she is predictable. I only need her calm until I get back into management. Once the board gives me authority again, we push her out of the house and deal with the shares from inside."

Celeste said something too faint to make out.

Grant answered, irritated. "Leo is already on my side. Stop worrying."

The recording ended.

I replayed the final line once, not because I doubted what I had heard, but because I needed to hear the casual certainty in his voice. Grant was counting on Leo's grief, the board's fear, and my instinct to protect both. He had mistaken restraint for weakness.

I handed the device back to Noah.

My husband was not improvising after a traumatic return. He had come home with a plan, and my son was part of it.
