Chapter 2

Evelyn's POV

The nurses stopped whispering the moment I opened the door to the VIP suite.

Celeste sat on the edge of the bed with both hands around a cup of ice chips. Grant stood beside her, tucking a thermal blanket around her shoulders as if the rest of the world had disappeared.

"Get her out," I said.

Grant straightened. "We survived five years on an island, Evelyn. Is this really how you welcome us home?"

"I paid off ten million dollars of your fraud this morning. I mortgaged family property to keep your creditors from tearing this company apart. I have done enough welcoming."

Celeste lowered her eyes. "Grant, maybe I should go."

"You are not going anywhere." He shifted in front of her. "She is carrying my child, and she has no one here. She kept me alive when I had malaria. Show some decency."

"Decency would have been telling your wife and son about her before you stepped into a wall of cameras."

The door opened behind me.

Leo came in so fast his school jacket was still half-zipped. He moved straight to Grant's side.

"Why are you doing this?" he demanded.

"Leo, wait outside."

"No." His face was pale, but his voice rose. "Dad survived a shipwreck. He spent five years trying to get back. You can't throw him out the first day he comes home."

"You do not know what happened while he was gone."

"Because you never tell me anything." He glanced at Celeste's stomach and swallowed. "That baby is my brother or sister. If Dad leaves, I'm going with him."

The words hit harder than I let him see. For five years I had hidden foreclosure notices, creditor letters, and federal subpoenas before Leo came downstairs for school. I had protected the version of Grant he needed in order to grieve. Now Grant was standing in front of him, wearing that old hero like a costume.

Grant put a hand on Leo's shoulder. "Your mother is angry. She has a right to be. We will give her time."

The faint satisfaction in his eyes told me exactly what he was doing. Leo was not his son in that moment. He was leverage.

"Fine," I said. "You and Celeste can stay at the main house until the press settles down. Temporarily."

Leo's shoulders loosened.

Grant smiled. "I knew you would be reasonable."

"Do not confuse restraint with forgiveness."

I looked at Grant, not Celeste. "There will be conditions. She stays in the guest wing. You do not enter my bedroom or my study. Neither of you speaks for Adler Enterprises. Neither of you gives instructions to my staff. And Leo goes to school tomorrow, because his life does not stop simply because you decided to return from the dead."

"You are making house rules for your husband?" Grant asked.

"I am making rules for two guests."

Leo flinched at the word. Grant noticed.

"It's fine, buddy," he said, immediately softening his tone for our son. "Your mom has been carrying a lot. We do not need to fight on day one."

That performance almost impressed me. He could shift from threat to tenderness in a breath, and Leo was too relieved to see the mechanism underneath it.

My phone rang. Chloe's name appeared on the screen.

"Every network wants a family statement," she said when I answered. "The board is asking whether Grant has any authority again."

"He does not," I said, watching him. "Send one sentence: Grant Adler has returned safely, and the company is grateful. No comment on management."

Grant heard every word. His mouth tightened, but he saved the argument for later.

That evening, Grant moved Celeste into the east-wing guest suite. I waited in the dining room with a divorce agreement centered on the table.

When he came in, he poured himself bourbon before he noticed the papers.

"Sign them."

He skimmed the first page and dropped it back onto the table. "No."

"You brought a pregnant mistress into my home. Our marriage is over."

"Our marriage is also tied to Adler Enterprises." He leaned over the table. "I built that company."

"You nearly bankrupted it. I rebuilt it."

"The public does not know that." His smile thinned. "They see a miracle survivor and the grieving wife who waited for him. Throw me out tonight and every network in the country will run the same story: ruthless CEO abandons traumatized husband days after his rescue."

"You think bad headlines give you ownership?"

"Bad headlines move stock prices. They scare lenders. They make boards nervous." He took another sip. "Play the supportive wife for a little while. Give Celeste space. Give me a seat at the table."

"You have no voting shares."

His expression sharpened. "I am still your legal husband until the court says otherwise. My death declaration will be vacated. I can challenge asset transfers, drag the estate into discovery, and make this company bleed legal fees for years."

"And lose."

"Eventually," he said. "But discovery alone can freeze transactions. Depositions can spook lenders. Litigation does not have to win to cost you money."

That was the first honest thing he had said all day. He was not claiming a legal right he knew he could prove. He was promising to weaponize delay.

"Maybe." He set down his glass. "But what happens to Leo while we fight? He already thinks you want to take me away from him. I can file for custody. I can give the press every ugly detail I choose."

I stared at him. "Leave our son out of your negotiations."

"Then stop treating me like a stranger."

He walked toward the east wing without touching the divorce papers.

I waited until the house went quiet.

After two in the morning, I went through the mudroom, where Grant had dumped the gear recovered with him. One yellow waterproof bag sat apart from the others. He had refused to let the staff carry it upstairs.

Inside were a rusted flare gun, fishing line, a torn nautical chart, and a few corroded tools. The bag should have been light, but the base felt too rigid.

I ran my fingers along the lining and found a concealed zipper beneath the rubber reinforcement. Salt had crusted around the pull. I worked it loose with the tip of a key.

The hidden compartment opened.

My hand closed around a small plastic bottle.

Prenatal folic-acid tablets.

The cap was sealed. The label was clean. No salt stains, no faded ink, no water damage.

I turned it under the mudroom light and found the manufacturing stamp.

Two years ago.

Grant had supposedly been isolated on an uncharted atoll for five years with no contact, no supplies, and no way home.

But someone had brought modern prenatal vitamins into his camp three years after he disappeared.
