Chapter 2

I still remember the first time I met Damien.

I was twenty-three then—new to the newsroom, nervous but determined, eager to prove that I deserved to be there. One afternoon, my producer handed me an assignment that immediately made my pulse quicken.

“Try to get an interview with Damien Caldwell,” he said. “Youngest coffee-chain mogul in the country. If you land this, it’ll be big.”

Even back then, Damien Caldwell was already something of an enigma. Reporters chased after him constantly, yet none of them succeeded. He avoided publicity, turned down interviews, and slipped away whenever cameras appeared. He clearly disliked being in the spotlight. But I wasn’t willing to fail like everyone else. I wanted to be the one who got through to him.

So I came up with a plan.

I applied for a job at one of his cafés—as a barista.

Yes, I lied. At the time, I convinced myself it was harmless, just a professional tactic—a small disguise to secure an exclusive interview. But thinking about it now, I realize maybe that was where it all began… the lies, starting small and harmless, eventually growing into the tangled web I’m trapped in today.

For several weeks, I worked behind the counter, pretending to learn about coffee blends while secretly observing him. He visited often—tall and composed, usually carrying a book in one hand and an espresso in the other. He rarely spoke, keeping conversations brief, mostly with the manager. Customers whispered about him, but he always seemed distant, unreachable.

Then one afternoon, I accidentally spilled coffee onto my apron. I was fumbling with napkins, embarrassed, when I felt someone watching me.

Our eyes met.

He gave me a small smile—just a slight lift of his lips, polite and restrained. “You must be new,” he said, his voice deep, smooth, and unexpectedly gentle.

“I just started,” I replied, forcing out a nervous laugh as my cheeks warmed.

That brief exchange ended quickly, but something shifted after that. I started noticing him more closely. Quietly, from a distance, I paid attention to his habits—which branches he preferred, the type of beans he chose, how he always dropped exactly one cube of sugar into his espresso before stirring.

Eventually, he caught me.

He turned around one day and looked straight at me, his gaze calm but knowing.

“I’m aware you’ve been following me,” he said, sounding more amused than annoyed. “But my answer hasn’t changed.”

I blinked, confused. “Answer…?”

“To your interview request,” he clarified. “You’re not the first reporter who’s tried something like this.”

Then he walked away.

But there was something in his tone—part teasing, part intrigued—that kept me from giving up. I approached him again. And again. I kept trying, refusing to let the opportunity slip away. Eventually, he relented.

The interview turned into conversations. Conversations became coffee. Coffee turned into late-night dinners. Before I knew it, laughter became familiar, and his presence became something I looked forward to every day.

Somewhere along the way, admiration turned into something deeper.

I fell in love with him.

So when he asked me to be with him, it felt unreal—like something out of a dream. Me, a girl from a small, forgotten town, someone who had spent her life hiding the truth about her family… loved by a man like Damien Caldwell.

But not everyone welcomed me.

Regina Caldwell—Damien’s mother—never hid her disapproval. She made it clear from the beginning.

“You don’t belong with him,” she told me once, her voice polite but edged with contempt. “This world isn’t meant for someone like you.”

She even offered me money to walk away. A generous amount—enough to change my life. But I refused. I couldn’t let her take him away from me.

So I made the worst decision of my life.

I lied.

I hired two people to pretend to be my parents. Paid them to attend dinners and family gatherings, to create the illusion of a respectable background. I told Damien’s family I had grown up abroad, that my family was stable and well-connected. I believed that if I maintained the lie long enough, they would eventually accept me.

And for a while, I thought they did.

But now I understood the truth. They had known all along. They allowed the lie to continue because it gave them power over me.

Because of that secret, I stayed silent.

Because of that secret, Damien married me.

And because of that secret, he believed he could control me—own me.

I pressed my hand against my chest, trying to ease the ache tightening my throat. Everything suddenly felt hollow. Every smile, every kiss, every whispered “I love you” felt like nothing more than a carefully crafted illusion.

The sound of the front door opening pulled me back to the present.

“Clara?”

Damien’s voice followed—warm, familiar, the same voice that once comforted me. I turned from the window as he walked inside, holding a bouquet of roses and a small velvet box.

He looked exhausted but still smiling, like the man I once loved without hesitation. “Happy anniversary,” he said gently. “I’m sorry about dinner. Ethan needed me. But I didn’t want to end the day without celebrating with you.”

I stared at the flowers, then at his face, unsure whether to cry or laugh.

He stepped closer and opened the velvet box, revealing a delicate diamond necklace. “I chose it myself,” he added softly.

“Damien…” My voice trembled.

He brushed a strand of hair away from my face, his touch gentle. “You said earlier you had something to tell me. A surprise, right?”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. Too many thoughts crowded my mind—too many truths that suddenly felt dangerous to speak.

Before I could respond, his phone rang.

I didn’t need to look. I already knew.

Camille.

His hand paused briefly before he exhaled. “I need to take this.”

“Right now?” I asked quietly.

“It’s important. Work matters.”

I forced a faint smile. “Can’t it wait until later?”

“Clara,” he said gently, “you know how things are. This deal is crucial. And you—” he touched my cheek lightly, “you should get some rest. Tomorrow’s a big day. You’ll be anchoring the special report about our partnership. I’ll be watching. I’m proud of you.”

Then he turned and left.

The door closing behind him sounded louder than any argument.

I remained standing there, staring at the necklace in my hand. A flawless gift… for a flawless lie.

Sleep never came that night. The conversation I overheard at the hospital kept replaying in my mind—the laughter, the betrayal, the truth I couldn’t unhear.

I needed answers.

So when midnight arrived, I quietly slipped out of bed, grabbed my keys, and followed him.

I parked a few streets away from the hotel where I saw his car enter. My heart pounded as I approached the lobby, pulling my cap low to hide my face.

Then I saw them.

Damien and Camille stood near the entrance, talking closely. Her fingers brushed his arm casually, like it was something familiar between them. I tried to convince myself it was just business—but then another figure appeared.

A woman.

She looked… like Camille.

Same hairstyle. Similar build. Even the same shade of lipstick Damien always preferred when I appeared on television.

I froze, my breath catching in my throat.

The woman stepped closer—

And kissed Damien.
