My Husband Covered Up My Mother's Death

8.1 / 10.0
After leaving another man's boutique wool jacket and an unfamiliar woody cologne in their bedroom, a wife watches her cold, billionaire husband, Nathaniel, ignore the glaring signs of an affair during dinner. As he cuts his steak with methodical precision, his calculated silence speaks volumes. In this high-tension modern romance and mystery story, she is left desperately wondering what dark secrets and lies are hidden beneath his indifferent facade.

My Husband Covered Up My Mother's Death Chapter 1

I left the jacket on the chair three nights ago. A man's jacket. Dark gray, expensive wool, with a label Nathaniel would recognize if he bothered to look. I bought it myself at a boutique in SoHo, paid cash, and draped it carefully over the armchair in our bedroom where he couldn't possibly miss it.

He walked past it twice that first night. Didn't even pause.

The second night, I added the cologne. Something woody and unfamiliar that I dabbed on my wrist and collarbone before dinner. I sat across from him at our dining table—the long mahogany one his mother selected when we got engaged—and watched him cut his steak with the same methodical precision he brought to everything. The cologne was obvious. I could smell it myself. But Nathaniel just chewed, swallowed, and asked if I'd confirmed the reservation for Thursday's client dinner.

"Yes," I said quietly. "Seven-thirty at Lumière."

"Good." He reached for his wine. "Make sure they seat us in the private room. Morrison doesn't like being seen before deals close."

I pressed my fingertips together under the table where he couldn't see. It was a habit I'd developed over the past year—a way to keep my hands still when something inside me wanted to shake. "Of course."

He didn't ask about the cologne. He didn't ask about the jacket. He didn't ask me anything at all.

I cleared the table alone that night. Nathaniel went to his study to take a call. I stood at the sink with my hands in soapy water and stared out the window at the city lights stretching toward the East River. Five years of marriage. Five years of trying to be the wife he needed. The wife his family expected. The wife who didn't ask too many questions or demand too much attention.

I used to think patience was love. That if I just waited long enough, tried hard enough, he would finally see me.

Now I wasn't sure what I thought anymore.

Two nights later, I went to his study to retrieve a contract I'd left on his desk that morning. Nathaniel was still at the office—some late meeting that would probably run until midnight. The house was silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of traffic below.

I pushed open the study door. His laptop sat open on the desk, screen still glowing. I meant to just grab the folder and leave. But something caught my eye.

An open browser tab. A flight itinerary.

I stepped closer.

Paris to JFK. First class. Arriving Friday, 6:45 p.m. Passenger name: Aitana Perez.

My breath stopped.

Beside the laptop, a piece of Nathaniel's personal stationery. His handwriting, neat and controlled: *Car service confirmed. Blue Room at The Meridian, 8 p.m.*

I stared at the note for a long time. Then I pulled out my phone and took pictures. The itinerary. The note. Everything.

My hands were steady. That surprised me.

I closed the study door quietly behind me and walked back to our bedroom. I lay down on top of the covers, still fully dressed, and stared at the ceiling until the sky outside turned gray.

Aitana Perez.

I knew that name. Nathaniel's college girlfriend. The one he never quite talked about but never quite forgot either. I'd seen her in old photos at his parents' house—dark hair, sharp cheekbones, the kind of face that made people look twice. She'd moved to Paris years ago. Or so I thought.

Now she was coming back.

And Nathaniel had reserved the Blue Room at The Meridian. That wasn't a business dinner. The Blue Room was intimate. Private. The kind of place you took someone when you wanted to be alone with them.

I didn't sleep that night. I just lay there breathing carefully, the way I used to when I was a child trying not to wake my mother during her migraines. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. Slow and controlled.

By morning, I had made a decision.

I would go to the Whitmore Foundation luncheon on Friday. I would smile. I would be the perfect Mrs. Carr, the way I always was. And I would watch.

Friday came. I wore a cream silk dress and the pearl earrings Nathaniel's mother gave me on our wedding day. I arrived at the Plaza exactly on time and found my assigned seat at the Hargrove table near the windows.

Nathaniel arrived twenty minutes late.

With Aitana on his arm.

She was more beautiful than her photos. Effortless in a way I had never managed to be, even with all the stylists and trainers and careful routines. She wore black—simple, elegant, expensive—and when she laughed at something Nathaniel said, he laughed too.

A real laugh. Full and unguarded.

I couldn't remember the last time I'd heard that sound from him.

He introduced her to everyone. "An old friend, just back from Paris." His hand rested on the small of her back as he guided her through the room. Easy. Familiar. Intimate.

I sat very still at my table and watched.

Eventually, he crossed the room to me. Not to introduce Aitana. Not to explain. Just to tell me the car would collect us at nine, and to please not monopolize the Hargrove table again because he needed to speak with Richard Hargrove privately before next week's board meeting.

"Of course," I said quietly.

He walked away without waiting for a response.

I stayed until the end of the luncheon. I smiled at the right people. I made the right small talk. And when I finally left, I drove home alone because Nathaniel had already gone—with Aitana—to some gallery opening in Chelsea that I hadn't been invited to.

That night, I couldn't sleep again. Around eleven, I heard voices downstairs. Nathaniel's study. I recognized his voice, and another—Marcus Chen, his college roommate.

I should have gone to bed. But something pulled me down the stairs instead. I stood in the dark hallway outside the study where a thin line of light showed beneath the door. It was cracked open just slightly. Enough to hear.

"You really kept it buried all these years?" Marcus's voice, low and impressed.

"Had to." Nathaniel sounded tired. "Aitana called me that night in a panic. She'd been drinking. Ran a red light and hit someone. She didn't even stop."

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Jesus," Marcus muttered.

"There was dashcam footage from a delivery truck. I got to it first. Destroyed it personally." Nathaniel paused. I heard the clink of ice in a glass. "Paid off the driver—guy named Reyes. Four hundred thousand and a relocation to Guatemala. He was gone within seventy-two hours."

"And the victim?"

"Died at the scene. Some woman. There was a kid in the car too—survived, but brain damage."

I stopped breathing.

"Christ, Nate."

"I know." Another pause. "But Aitana… I couldn't let her go to prison. I loved her."

"And now she's back."

"Yeah." Nathaniel's voice softened in a way it never did when he spoke to me. "Now she's back."

I stood in that dark hallway for eleven minutes. I counted every second.

Then I walked upstairs to Ensley's room. My little sister. Twenty-three years old with the cognitive ability of a twelve-year-old because of the accident that killed our mother.

The accident Nathaniel covered up.

For Aitana.

I sat on the edge of Ensley's bed and watched her sleep. Her face was peaceful. Innocent. She had no idea.

I didn't cry.

Something inside me had stopped.
