Nora Bennett spent years sacrificing her career to nurse Liam's mother, only to see the promised heirloom handed to another woman while he stood silent. That night, she leaves for good. Days later, she's engaged to Adrian Vale—his fiercest rival—a man who actually values her work and dreams. When Liam realizes the hotel he desperately needs belongs to her, he promises rings and weddings. But Nora is done waiting; she's building a future with Adrian while Liam pleads for the life he once refused to give her.

I Left Your Family, Now You Want to Join Mine Chapter 1

The soup was still too hot to hold without a towel when I walked into the dining room and saw Eleanor slide the emerald onto Chloe's finger.

"There," Eleanor said, beaming. "Finally, someone who can help Liam hold this family together."

The table broke into soft applause. Chloe laughed and pressed her hand to her chest, the green stone catching the chandelier light.

I knew that ring. I had cleaned it with a soft cloth every night for three months while Eleanor lay in a hospital bed at St. Luke's, too weak to lift her own hands. She used to watch me polish it and say, *This will be yours one day, sweetheart. You've earned it.*

I set the soup down carefully. Butternut squash, no cream, low sodium. Her cardiologist's orders.

My chair wasn't where I'd left it. Someone had moved it to the far end, beside the swinging kitchen door. Chloe sat in my spot, right next to Liam.

Liam glanced at the ring once. Then he picked up the bottle of Bordeaux and topped off Chloe's glass, like nothing in the room had changed.

Eight people turned to look at me. Liam's aunt. His cousin and her husband. Chloe's parents, smiling politely. They were waiting.

They wanted me to say congratulations first.

"Nora, sit, sit," Eleanor said, waving me toward the kitchen chair. "The soup smells wonderful. Doesn't it, Gordon?"

Chloe's father nodded. "Liam tells us you're quite the cook."

I sat down. The door bumped my shoulder as the caterer came through with plates.

"Gordon has been so generous," Eleanor went on, patting Chloe's hand. "He's already talked to two investors about Liam's expansion. Can you imagine? Real money, real connections." She turned to me with the same warm smile she used to give her nurses. "And Nora, you're so detail-oriented. I'll still need you for my follow-ups at the clinic. Nobody keeps track of my medications like you do."

Detail-oriented.

Two years ago, I'd had an offer to run hotel operations in Lisbon. A director title. Double my salary. I'd turned it down the same week Eleanor collapsed in her garden.

Liam had held my face in the hospital parking garage and said, "Once Mom's better, we'll get married. I promise. Just stay."

So I stayed.

I looked at him now. "Do you agree with tonight's arrangement?"

The table went quiet. Chloe's smile didn't move, but her eyes flicked to Liam.

He set the wine down. He didn't look at the ring on her finger. He didn't reach for it.

He leaned toward me instead and lowered his voice. "Don't make this ugly. Not at my mother's dinner."

"I asked you a question."

"Chloe can help me grow the business. She knows people, Nora. She can get me out of this town." His jaw tightened. "You're better at taking care of things here. At home. That's not an insult. It's just what you're good at."

What I was good at.

Something in my chest went very still.

Chloe picked up her empty dessert plate and held it out to me across the corner of the table. "Nora, would you mind cutting me a slice of the cake? Since you're closest to the kitchen."

Her ring clinked against the porcelain.

I took the plate. I picked up the cake knife from the sideboard behind me. Then I set the knife down on the tablecloth, very gently, and put the plate on top of it.

"Liam," I said. "We're done."

He blinked. "What?"

"Us. This. It's over."

"Nora—"

I stood up and walked out. Nobody stopped me on the stairs.

In the bedroom we shared, I pulled my suitcase from the closet and started with the important things. Passport. Birth certificate. The folder with my degree and my work references. My laptop and charger. Then clothes, folded fast and stacked tight.

The door opened behind me.

"What the hell are you doing?" Liam said.

"Packing."

"You're seriously walking out in the middle of dinner?" He closed the door hard. "Mom has her cardiology follow-up next Thursday. Who's supposed to take her?"

I zipped the inner pocket over my passport. That was his first question. Not *are you okay*. Not *I'm sorry*.

"Is this about the ring?" He dragged a hand through his hair. "Fine. I'll buy you one. A better one. Is that what you want? You want me to prove something?"

"I don't want a ring from you."

"Then what do you want?"

I opened my laptop on the bed, pulled up a document, and turned the screen toward him. "This is her full schedule. Cardiology on Thursday at ten with Dr. Reyes. Bloodwork the following Monday. Her pharmacy refills on the fifteenth. The home nurse is Patrice, and her number's at the bottom. So is the clinic coordinator's."

I hit print. The little printer on the desk whirred to life.

He stared at the pages coming out. "You know I don't have time for this. At least find someone to replace you before you leave. You know who's good. You can interview—"

"No."

"Nora, come on."

"I'm giving you everything you need to take care of her. I'm not finding you another me."

I handed him the warm pages. He didn't take them, so I set them on the dresser.

Then I slid the house key off my ring. The little brass one with the scratch on the teeth from the time I'd dropped it in the driveway. I put it on his nightstand, next to the framed photo of the three of us from Eleanor's sixtieth birthday.

"Your mother is your responsibility now."

He looked at the key like it might bite him.

I zipped the suitcase and lifted it off the bed.

He beat me downstairs. When I rolled the suitcase through the dining room, he stepped into my path near the archway. Every head at the table turned.

"It's pouring outside," he said, loud enough for the room. "Where are you even going? Get it out of your system, then come back. We'll talk tomorrow."

"Honestly, Nora." Eleanor set her spoon down beside my soup. "We have guests. Gordon and Diane didn't come here to watch a scene."

Chloe's mother looked at her lap. Chloe twisted the emerald on her finger.

"I'm not coming back," I said. "Liam and I broke up tonight. I'm sorry your dinner was interrupted, Eleanor. Your schedule is upstairs."

"Broke up?" Eleanor laughed, short and disbelieving. "Over a piece of jewelry?"

I didn't answer. I stepped around Liam, and this time he let me.

The rain hit hard the second I opened the front door. My ride was already idling at the curb, wipers going fast. The driver popped the trunk, and I heaved the suitcase in myself.

"Nora! Wait!"

Chloe hurried down the porch steps with an umbrella in one hand and a foil-wrapped plate in the other. She held it out under the umbrella, smiling like we were old friends.

"Take some cake. There's so much left over. It's a shame to waste it."

The emerald sat on her finger, right beside the foil.

"Keep it," I said. "You'll be the one hosting next time."

I got in the car and shut the door.

Through the rain-streaked window, I watched her stand there with the plate. Behind her, Liam filled the doorway, phone already at his ear, probably calling someone to ask what to do about Thursday.

The car pulled away. The house shrank into the dark.

My hands were shaking, so I held my phone tight until they stopped. Then I opened my email and scrolled down to a thread I'd left untouched for five months.

*Adrian Moreau. Re: Hawthorne Operations Partnership.*

His last message was still sitting there, polite and patient. *The offer stands whenever you're ready. I'd rather wait for the right person than settle for the available one.*

I typed my reply before I could talk myself out of it.

*I'm ready to talk about the hotel.*

I hit send and leaned my head against the cold window.

My phone buzzed less than a minute later.

*Tomorrow. Nine a.m. The Hawthorne, top floor. I'll have coffee waiting.*
