After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me

8.5 / 10.0
Five years after vanishing to Europe, Macy Edwards returns to the pack with a mission: remind the Omega of her place. But this Omega is no servant—she's the Alpha's chosen mate, and her wolf Nova refuses to bow. As Macy's honeyed venom drips through every word and stolen glance, the pack house becomes a battlefield. One woman must decide: surrender to the shadows or fight for the mate her wolf already claimed.

After My Alpha Chose His Mistress Over Me Chapter 1

Three weeks before the Mate Ceremony, I was finalizing the seating chart.

I remember the exact pen in my hand — a cheap black ballpoint from the pack office drawer — when Caden Voss knocked on the doorframe and told me Alpha Rome had called a full pack assembly in the great hall. Mandatory. Every wolf. Now.

I looked up from the chart. Row by row, I had spent the morning placing each pack family by rank, by alliance, by the small political grudges I had spent five years quietly managing. The Henleys near the Marsdens because their feud had finally cooled. The omegas closest to the kitchen so Elara wouldn't have to walk far. Tiny acts of care no one would ever name.

"Did he say what about?" I asked.

Caden's eyes didn't quite meet mine. "No, Luna."

He still called me that. He was the only one who did.

I capped the pen. I set it down beside the seating chart. I had no premonition, no twist in the gut, no warning howl from Sera who had been half-asleep inside me for so long I had stopped expecting her to speak. There was only the ordinary weight of a Tuesday and the click of my heels on the hallway floor.

The great hall was already full when I slipped in at the back. Rome stood on the dais in the navy henley I had picked out for him last winter. His hand was placed — gently, possessively, *theatrically* — on the lower belly of the woman beside him.

Maisy Stone.

She wore soft pink. Her hair was loose. Her eyes were already wet, perfectly wet, in the practiced way of a woman who had been practicing.

"My pack," Rome began, and his Alpha voice rolled across the room the way it always did — warm, certain, borrowed. "I have an announcement that, as your Alpha, I owe you in honesty."

I heard the words from a great distance.

*Pup. Childhood. Vulnerable. Duty. Protection. Pack house. Immediately.*

And then his eyes — finally — found mine across the crowd. There was an apology in them. Not the kind that meant *I'm sorry.* The kind that meant *I'm sorry you have to be here for this, but you'll understand, you always understand.*

Something inside my chest made a small, almost polite sound. Like a teacup setting down on a saucer.

Five years.

Five years of alliances I negotiated with my own voice. Five years of a $500,000 loan I had never asked back. Five years of dimming myself, of telling Sera *not yet,* of pinning a Luna title to next month and then the month after. Five years of an unmarked neck I had touched a thousand times in the mirror like it was a bruise that would eventually heal.

The teacup did not shatter. It simply stopped being mine.

I walked.

I did not know I was going to until I was already moving. Down the center aisle, past the Henleys and the Marsdens and the carefully arranged grudges, past Elara whose hand flew to her mouth, past Caden whose jaw locked. Rome's expression shifted from rehearsed solemnity to something narrower. Confused. Then alarmed.

I stopped at the foot of the dais.

The hall went so quiet I could hear Maisy's breathing change.

I did not raise my voice. I have never needed to.

"I, Lana Mitchell," I said, "reject you, Alpha Rome Blackwell of Silverfang Pack, as my mate, severing this bond by the will of the Moon Goddess."

Rome's face went white.

His hand flew off Maisy's belly and to his chest, fingers clawing at the henley like he could pull the pain out through fabric. He staggered back a half-step. The dais creaked. Someone in the front row gasped — Danna, I think, though I did not turn to look.

Maisy began to sob immediately. Loud. Wet. On cue.

I felt the bond go. It was not a tearing. It was a door I had been holding open with my shoulder for five years finally, mercifully, swinging shut.

And somewhere deep beneath my ribs, a silver-white shape lifted her head.

*Sera.*

*I'm here,* she said. Quiet. Almost gentle. *I've always been here.*

I turned my back on the dais.

I walked out of the great hall the way I had walked in — heels even, spine straight, hands at my sides. I did not look at Rome. I did not look at Maisy. I did not look at the pack I had built brick by invisible brick and was now leaving in the middle of the floor like a coat I no longer needed.

The parking lot air hit me cold.

My hands began to shake the moment the doors closed behind me. I gripped the strap of my bag until my knuckles went bloodless and walked to the far edge of the lot where no security camera could see my face.

I mind-linked Anika.

*Come get me.*

The response came back in less than a second, the way it does when someone has been waiting.

*On my way. Twelve minutes.*

She made it in ten.

Her black SUV pulled in fast and stopped harder than it needed to. The passenger door swung open. There was a duffel bag in the back seat I recognized — the go-bag she had been packing for weeks and never once mentioned, because Anika Shaw does not insult the people she loves by saying *I told you so* before she has to.

I got in. I shut the door. I did not cry.

We sat there for sixty long seconds. The engine hummed. Through the windshield, the pack house rose in front of us, lit gold against the gray Pacific sky, and I looked at every window I had personally chosen the curtains for.

"Lan," Anika said finally, soft.

I did not look at her. I looked at the house.

"I want everything back," I said. "All of it."

She put the SUV in drive.

"Then let's go take it."

We pulled out of the lot just as the first mind-link slammed against the inside of my skull — Rome's voice, raw and furious and already cracking. *Lana. LANA. You come back here right now —*

I closed the link.

Danna's came next, cold as a court summons. *An unmarked she-wolf holds no claim to pack assets. You will return what is not yours —*

I closed that one too.

Anika glanced at me. "They started already?"

"Both of them."

"Good." Her hands tightened on the wheel. "Means they know."

We drove east, out of Silverfang territory, toward the small lake house Anika kept off the books. The rain started somewhere around the county line — the steady gray Pacific Northwest drizzle that would, in the weeks to come, become the soundtrack of everything I rebuilt.

That night, at Anika's kitchen table, I spread out five years of handwritten field journals.

They covered the wood from edge to edge. Black leather. Numbered. Dated. Every alliance I had brokered in my own voice. Every financial transfer signed in my own hand. Every loyalty owed to *Lana Mitchell* and not to *Alpha Rome of Silverfang.* Six names I trusted absolutely — Caden, Elara, four others — circled in red.

Anika set a mug of black coffee at my elbow and a square of dark chocolate beside it.

"Eat," she said. "Then talk to me."

I broke the chocolate in half. I touched the unmarked curve of my neck, once, the way I always did when I was about to decide something I would not be able to take back.

Sera stirred again, warm and waiting.

"We start with the alliances," I said. "By morning, none of them belong to him anymore."

Outside, the rain kept falling.

Inside, for the first time in five years, I picked up the pen and wrote my own name at the top of the page.
