Chapter 3

"I am not asking for a favor." On my third day at the ranch, I slid my tablet across the scratched oak of the kitchen island. "I am proposing a trade."

Caleb did not reach for it. He stayed on the opposite side of the counter with a mug of black coffee in one hand.

"Clearwater is a working ranch, Lena. I won't turn my home into a petting zoo with a fake filter to sell weekend fantasies to city people."

"Good, because fake ranch photography is ugly." I tapped the screen, waking his own website. "This is worse. Your homepage photo is five years old. The booking portal doesn't list the north trails. Your mobile menu breaks. The centennial association links to a page that still says Rosie is two."

His gaze flicked to the screen despite himself.

"I don't need a marketing lecture from someone who hasn't lived in this state for three years."

"You need cash."

The words hit hard enough that his mug stopped halfway to his mouth.

I swiped to my professional portfolio. Working farms, boutique outdoor brands, ranch equipment, horses at dawn, weathered hands repairing fences. Nothing staged. Nothing sentimental.

"I shoot a full commercial portfolio for Clearwater," I said. "Stills, trail images, staff portraits, property details, short-form assets for your booking pages. You get material you can actually sell with. I get the western documentary series I need to keep my New York exhibition slot. We both have the same six-week deadline."

"I'll pay your standard rate. Send me an invoice."

"You can't afford my day rate."

His expression went flat.

"That wasn't an insult. It was math. If you drain your operating account to pay me, who misses a paycheck? Owen? The stable hands? Who covers feed next month?"

Caleb slammed the mug down. Coffee jumped over the rim.

"Leave my employees and my daughter out of your sales pitch."

"Then stop pretending pride is a business plan."

The back door opened before he could answer. Owen walked in carrying a clipboard and one muddy glove.

"Association called," he said. "They want updated promotional images by Monday or they move Clearwater to the bottom of the centennial route."

I folded my arms. "Convenient timing."

Caleb shot me a look that could have stripped paint.

Owen glanced between us. "Should I come back?"

"No," Caleb said.

"Yes," I said at the same time.

Owen set the clipboard on the counter. "I'll be in the barn pretending I don't know either of you."

When he left, Caleb finally picked up the tablet. He moved through my portfolio in silence. He stopped on a series I had shot for a family-owned horse farm in Pennsylvania: muddy boots, fog over pasture, a teenage girl checking a mare's hoof, a father repairing a fence under sleet.

"No models?" he asked.

"No models. Real people doing real work."

"No staged family breakfast."

"I would rather eat the memory card."

A corner of his mouth moved, almost a smile.

"Rosie is not advertising material," he said.

"Agreed. I can photograph her for you privately, but nothing public without your approval."

"No using Mara's story to sell the ranch."

That rule caught me off guard, then made me respect him more.

"Agreed."

"No entering private rooms for texture shots. No opening storage boxes because they look historic. If a door is closed, ask."

"Fine. My rules now."

He set the tablet down.

"You don't get to veto an image because you don't like how tired you look," I said. "You can veto for safety, privacy, or inaccurate representation. Not vanity."

"I don't have vanity."

"That sentence alone proves you do."

His eyes narrowed.

"Second," I continued, "if the town starts using me as a reason to pressure this project, you handle the ranch politics. I am not apologizing for existing in the same frame as you."

"You won't have to."

"Third, this is a trade, not charity. My base shoot is exchanged for location access and the right to exhibit the documentary work. If the ranch lands paid commercial contracts because of my images, we negotiate those separately."

Caleb studied me for a long moment. "You already thought through a contract."

"I work in New York. We turn coffee meetings into contracts."

"And if the gallery cancels anyway?"

"Then I still finish what I promised here."

"Why?"

I could have said because Elaine needed the ranch stable. Because Rosie had already started calling me Aunt Lena. Because I had heard a banker give him six weeks.

Instead, I gave him the one answer that did not turn my guilt into currency.

"Because the work is good."

That landed differently. His shoulders eased a fraction.

He took the clipboard Owen had left and scanned the association deadline. "Monday gives us four days."

"Enough for a first batch."

"Weather turns Saturday."

"Then we shoot tomorrow and Friday."

"You haven't been on a horse in years."

"My camera works from the ground."

"The north ridge doesn't."

I leaned forward. "Are you trying to scare me out of the job?"

"I am trying to establish that you don't get special treatment because you used to know this place."

"Perfect. I hate special treatment."

Caleb opened the junk drawer, found a pen, and pulled a yellow legal pad toward him. He wrote three lines in block letters: SIX WEEKS. COMMERCIAL PORTFOLIO. EXHIBITION ACCESS. Beneath them, he added our boundaries and signed his name.

It was not a lawyer's contract. It was enough to make the choice real.

I signed underneath him.

His hand was still on the paper when mine left the pen. For one second we both stared at our names sitting beside each other. Four years ago, I had left without giving him an answer. Three years ago, I had left after Mara's funeral before sunrise.

This time I had put my name on a deadline.

Caleb tore the sheet from the pad and handed me a copy.

"Corral at six tomorrow morning," he said. "No staged cowboys. No soft-focus nonsense."

I slid the paper into my camera case. "Try not to be disappointing before breakfast."

He picked up his coffee again. "You asked for the real ranch, Lena. Don't be late."
