When My Fiancé Let My Sister Die
When My Fiancé Let My Sister Die Chapter 1
I stood in the Plaza ballroom with a glass of champagne I hadn't touched. The crystal felt cold against my palm. Around me, guests chatted in clusters, their voices blending into a low hum beneath the string quartet. My engagement party. Our engagement party. Except Danny wasn't here.
I checked my phone again. The text had arrived forty minutes ago: *Stuck in traffic on the FDR. Be there in 30.*
I twisted my mother's vintage ring on my finger. The emerald caught the light from the chandeliers overhead. I'd worn it tonight because it made me feel like she was here, watching me step into this new chapter. Seven years with Danny. Seven years of building something real.
An hour passed. Then another text: *So sorry babe. This traffic is insane. Start without me.*
I smiled tightly at a passing couple and set down my champagne. My hand was steady. I stepped out of the ballroom into the corridor, pulling the heavy door closed behind me. The noise faded. I could breathe.
That's when I heard it. Music. Not the string quartet from my party, but something louder, more celebratory. Coming from down the hall.
I followed the sound. My heels clicked against the marble. The Plaza had multiple event spaces. Maybe a wedding reception. I needed air anyway.
I pushed open a set of gilded doors.
The room was smaller than mine but decorated just as beautifully. White roses everywhere. Champagne towers. A photographer moving through the crowd. And in the center of the dance floor, a couple swaying together under soft lighting.
The man wore a tailored charcoal suit. The woman wore a white bridal gown with lace sleeves and a long train that pooled around her feet.
I blinked.
The man was Danny.
The woman in the wedding dress was Antonella Morris. My best friend.
I couldn't move. My brain tried to make sense of what I was seeing. Danny was supposed to be stuck in traffic. But he was here. Dancing. With Antonella. Who was wearing a wedding gown.
I looked up. A banner stretched across the back wall: *Congratulations Danny & Antonella.*
Matching rings on their fingers. A photographer capturing their first dance.
My chest went tight. Not pain exactly. Something colder.
I walked into the room. Heads turned. The music kept playing. Danny looked up and saw me. His expression didn't change much. Just a slight tightening around his eyes.
I stopped three feet from them. "What is this?"
Antонella stepped back from Danny. Her face crumpled into something that might have been tears. "Vivienne, oh my God, I can explain—"
"Explain what?" My voice came out calm. Too calm. "Explain why you're wearing a wedding dress at an engagement party with my boyfriend?"
Danny adjusted his tie. That little movement he always did when he was about to lie. "It's not what it looks like."
"It looks like you're engaged to my best friend."
"It's a business arrangement." He said it like he was explaining a quarterly report. "Purely strategic. There's an investor—a very conservative guy—who won't sign unless I present as a stable family man. This engagement is on paper only. It means nothing."
I stared at him. "You're asking me to believe this is fake."
Antонella reached for my hand. I stepped back. She let her arm drop, her face twisting. "I'm sacrificing myself for the company, Viv. For Danny's future. You know how important this deal is."
"So important you needed a white dress and a party?"
"Optics," Danny said. "The investor needs to see commitment."
A woman in an elaborate gown pushed through the small crowd that had gathered. Mrs. Guzman. Danny's mother. She looked me up and down with barely concealed disgust.
"You shouldn't be here," she said. Her voice was sharp. "This is a private event."
"Private," I repeated. "In the same hotel as my engagement party."
"Your engagement party." Mrs. Guzman's laugh was thin. "Darling, you're just a girl from nowhere. You should be grateful my son looked at you twice. But this—" She gestured at Antonella. "This is what his future actually looks like. Connections. Class. A real partnership."
The cold thing in my chest spread. My hands went very still.
I pulled out my phone. Opened Instagram. Hit the live button.
The viewer count started climbing immediately. Hundreds. Then thousands.
I turned the camera toward Danny and Antonella. The white dress. The banner. The rings.
"Hi everyone," I said. My voice was steady. "I'm at The Plaza Hotel. This is my boyfriend Danny Guzman. And my best friend Antonella Morris. They're having an engagement party. The same night as mine. In the same building."
Danny's face went white. "Vivienne, what are you doing—"
"I'm done." I kept the camera steady. "Seven years. And this is what I get. So here's what happens next. I'm ending this relationship. And I'm reclaiming every single cent I invested in Guzman Group. Every. Single. Cent."
The viewer count hit fifty thousand.
Danny lunged for my phone. I stepped back. Security moved toward us.
The comments were exploding. The stream was spreading.
I ended the broadcast and looked at Danny. Really looked at him. And saw nothing I recognized.
"We're done," I said.
Then I walked out.
