Chapter 1

The crisp morning air filled my lungs as I raced through the forest, my paws barely touching the ground. Dawn runs with the pack had always been my favorite—the way the first light filtered through the trees, the synchronized movement of wolves running together, and most importantly, the closeness I felt to Ethan when our wolves ran side by side. Ten years together, six as mates, and still my heart quickened when his silver-gray form brushed against mine.

But today was different.

I slowed my pace as an unfamiliar sensation rippled through our mate bond. Something was off. Ethan had pulled ahead with the other dominant wolves, but instead of the usual open connection between our minds, I felt a strange barrier—like he was deliberately shielding his thoughts.

Then it happened. A momentary slip in his mental guard, and I caught it—a feminine voice, intimate and sweet, flowing through his consciousness.

*'I miss your wolf already, Jake. Last night was perfect...'*

Jake. The name of Ethan's wolf. A name that only I, as his mate, should use during our most intimate moments. The endearment hung in the air between us, though Ethan seemed unaware of his mental leak. My wolf, Kiera, bristled inside me, her confusion mirroring my own.

*'Who was that?'* Kiera growled internally.

I pushed harder, running faster to catch up to Ethan, my heart hammering not from exertion but from a growing dread. As I drew closer, I caught another fragment:

*'...can't wait until we can stop hiding. Your scent on my fur feels right...'*

The voice was unfamiliar—young, seductive, and worst of all, possessive. I nearly stumbled, my paw catching on a root as the implications hit me. This wasn't pack business. This was something else entirely.

When we returned to our den that evening, I watched Ethan carefully. He moved around our home with practiced ease, but there was a new tension in his shoulders, a deliberate casualness that hadn't been there before. He avoided my eyes when he spoke about his day, something he'd never done in all our years together.

"Ethan," I finally said, my voice steadier than I felt, "I heard something during the run today. A she-wolf's voice in your mind."

His body went rigid for just a moment before he turned to me with a carefully composed expression. "What are you talking about, Liv?"

"A female wolf. Using Jake's name. Talking about last night." I kept my tone even, giving him the chance to explain, to tell me I'd misunderstood.

Ethan's laugh was too quick, too dismissive. "That's just routine Delta chatter. You know how the younger wolves are with their mind-links—no sense of boundaries." He approached me, placing his hands on my shoulders. "You're imagining things, babe."

But I wasn't. I knew what I'd heard. And his touch, once so comforting, now felt wrong against my skin.

"Which Delta?" I pressed. "I didn't recognize her voice."

Something flashed in his eyes—annoyance? Fear? It was gone too quickly to identify.

"Look, I've got to head out," he said abruptly, dropping his hands. "Late patrol tonight. Border security concerns."

"You didn't mention that earlier," I said, watching him gather his jacket.

"Last-minute assignment. Beta Ryan's orders." He leaned in to kiss me, but it felt perfunctory, his mind already elsewhere. "Don't wait up."

The door closed behind him, and I stood alone in our den, the space suddenly feeling too large, too empty. Kiera paced restlessly within me.

*'He's lying,'* she growled. *'His scent changed when you confronted him. Fear. Guilt.'*

I sank onto our bed, running my fingers over the mate mark on my neck—the physical symbol of our bond, our promise to each other. For the first time in six years, it felt cold under my touch.

Sleep evaded me that night. Ethan returned in the early hours, smelling of forest and something else—something I couldn't quite identify but that made Kiera whine with unease. I pretended to be asleep as he slipped into bed beside me, maintaining a careful distance between our bodies.

The next morning, I woke alone. Ethan had already left for an early meeting with the pack council—or so the hastily scrawled note on his pillow claimed. I sat up slowly, the unease of the previous day settling into a heavy weight in my chest.

Then my mind buzzed with an incoming link—unfamiliar, uninvited.

*'Good morning, Luna Olivia,'* came a silky voice, dripping with false sweetness. *'I thought you should see what your mate has been up to.'*

An image flashed into my mind—a fresh mate mark on a slender neck, the wound still raw and new. A mark identical to mine.

*'He says my wolf's mark connects deeper than yours ever did,'* the voice continued. *'I'm Amber Collins. The rogue your mate has welcomed into your pack... and his bed. For months now.'*

The world stopped. My breath caught in my throat as Kiera howled in rage and pain within me.

*'Careful, Olivia,'* Kiera's voice cut through my shock. *'Don't respond. Not yet. We need to be smart about this.'*

She was right. Through the haze of betrayal, one thing became clear: I needed proof. I needed the full truth before I confronted the man who had just shattered my world with a second bite mark.
