Chapter 2

The morning after Amber's cruel revelation, I moved through our den like a ghost. Ethan had already left—another 'early meeting' that I now understood was likely a lie. My fingers trembled as I touched the mate mark on my neck, the symbol that once represented our eternal bond. Now it felt like a brand of betrayal.

Kiera, my wolf, remained unusually quiet within me. Her silence was more concerning than her earlier rage—she was calculating, planning.

*'We need evidence,'* she finally said. *'Concrete proof that no one can deny.'*

I nodded, steeling myself. As Luna of the Silver Moon Pack, I had access to records and territories that others didn't. It was time to use those privileges.

The pack's administrative den was quiet when I arrived. I nodded to Marcus, the elderly record-keeper, who bowed his head respectfully.

"Luna Olivia," he greeted me. "What brings you here today?"

"Just reviewing some housing assignments," I said, keeping my voice steady. "Alpha Ethan mentioned some... adjustments I should be aware of."

Marcus didn't question me—why would he? In ten years, I'd never given anyone reason to doubt my word. He simply gestured toward the records room and returned to his work.

Alone among the shelves of leather-bound logs and territory maps, I began my search. My heart pounded as I pulled out the den assignment ledger, flipping to recent entries. There it was—a small cabin on the eastern border, assigned to "A. Collins" just three months ago. The authorization signature was Ethan's, but the request had bypassed the normal council approval process.

I moved to the patrol schedules next, scanning the rotations for the past several months. The pattern emerged quickly: nights when Ethan claimed to be on border patrol, he was consistently paired with only one wolf—Amber. And those patrols always centered around the eastern territory, near her new den.

My hands shook as I carefully returned the ledgers to their places. The evidence was mounting, each discovery another crack in my heart.

*'There's more,'* Kiera urged. *'We need to see for ourselves.'*

That afternoon, I made my way toward the eastern border, telling anyone who asked that I was gathering herbs for Elara, our pack healer. The lie tasted bitter on my tongue—I'd never been dishonest with my pack before. But then, I'd never had reason to be.

As I approached the area where Amber's den was located, a familiar scent caught my attention—but not where it should be. Ethan's scent, mixed with something floral and foreign, marked a trail leading away from the main pack grounds. I followed it, my stomach tightening with each step.

The trail led to our sacred hunting grounds—the very place where Ethan had first declared his love for me a decade ago. Now, territorial markers lined the perimeter, fresh and deliberate. Amber's scent, intertwined with Ethan's, creating a boundary that screamed possession.

I knelt beside a particularly strong scent marker, touching the earth beneath it. This wasn't accidental. These were placed strategically, methodically—a she-wolf claiming territory that wasn't hers to take.

*'She's marking our spaces,'* Kiera growled. *'And he's allowing it.'*

Two nights later, under the full moon, I made my final confirmation. Howling Ridge was sacred to our pack—the place where mated pairs performed the ancient wolf dance during the full moon. Ethan had told me he would be meeting with neighboring Alphas that night, but Kiera knew better.

*'He'll be there,'* she insisted. *'With her.'*

I positioned myself downwind, hidden among the dense pines that surrounded the ridge. The moon rose high and bright, bathing the clearing in silver light. My wait wasn't long.

Two wolves entered the clearing—one silver-gray, instantly recognizable as Ethan's wolf form, and a smaller russet wolf that must be Amber. They circled each other slowly, their movements intimate and practiced. When their muzzles touched in the traditional greeting of mated pairs, I had to stifle a gasp.

Then they began to dance—the sacred wolf dance that Ethan and I had performed countless times under this same moon. Their bodies moved in perfect synchronization, leaping and turning in the ancient pattern that symbolized eternal devotion.

Kiera whimpered within me, the pain almost unbearable. This wasn't just physical betrayal—it was the desecration of something sacred. Something that had once been ours alone.

As I watched them complete the final circle of the dance, pressing their foreheads together in the gesture that symbolized the joining of two souls, I felt something shift inside me. The shock and pain crystallized into something harder, colder.

I had my proof now. All of it. And with that knowledge came clarity.

*'What will you do?'* Kiera asked as we silently retreated from our hiding place.

I touched the mate mark on my neck one last time, feeling its pulse beneath my fingertips. "We're leaving," I whispered. "But first, we prepare."

The moon watched impassively as I made my way back to what had once been our home, my mind already formulating the next steps. Ethan had made his choice. Now it was time to make mine.
