Chapter 4

The Summit hall was larger than I expected. High ceilings. Stone walls that made every sound echo. Five Alphas sat at the main table, their Lunas beside them. Behind them, their Betas and Gammas stood in formal rows. At the far end, elevated slightly above the rest, sat the Lycan Council envoy.

I'd seen his name in the briefing materials. Prince Gian of the Silvercrest line. He wore dark formal attire without ornamentation. His posture was relaxed but his attention was absolute. The kind of man who had sat through a thousand Summit presentations and could tell within thirty seconds which ones mattered.

I stood at the presenter's podium with my briefcase open beside me. Colter stood three steps behind me and to the left. The traditional position for an Alpha whose Luna was delivering formal testimony. He'd taken it without question when we arrived. Probably assumed I was presenting something he'd already approved.

I pulled out the border-security alliance document. Set it on the podium. Opened to the first page.

"The Ironveil-Crescent Ridge Border Security Alliance," I began. My voice carried clearly through the hall. "Eighteen months of negotiation. Forty pages of binding protocol covering shared patrol rotations, intelligence exchange, and wolfsbane-detection procedures along our eastern boundary."

I walked them through it. Clause by clause. The territorial disputes I'd resolved. The rogue-movement patterns I'd documented. The detection grid I'd designed that reduced border incidents by sixty percent in the first quarter alone.

The Alphas listened. A few took notes. The Crescent Ridge Alpha nodded twice during sections that covered his pack's obligations.

When I finished, the Summit chair called for ratification. Five hands rose. Unanimous.

"The Alliance is formally recognized," the chair said. He looked at me. "Luna Zoe, the Council commends your diplomatic service. Seven years of alliance-building on behalf of Ironveil Pack. Your work has strengthened the security of this entire region."

I inclined my head. Felt Colter shift his weight behind me. He was smiling. I didn't need to look to know. He always smiled when someone praised work he thought was his.

Then Petra Vasile stood.

Luna of the Ashford Pack. Forty years old. Sharp as broken glass. She'd been seated two chairs down from the Summit chair, her Alpha beside her. When she rose, the hall went quiet.

"I would like to add testimony to the commendation," she said. Her voice was formal but her gaze was locked on Colter. "Two years ago, Ashford's eastern border faced coordinated rogue incursions. We were losing ground. Luna Zoe negotiated a tri-pack intelligence-sharing protocol that identified the rogue staging points within six weeks. The incursions stopped. She did this without requesting credit. Without requiring formal acknowledgment. She simply saw the problem and solved it."

Petra paused. Let the silence stretch. "Alpha Colter, I do not believe you were aware of this negotiation. Luna Zoe handled it independently through back-channel diplomatic correspondence. The treaty documents bear only her signature."

Colter's expression tightened. I felt it through the space between us even though I still wasn't looking at him. The shift from pride to confusion to the slow creep of something that might have been shame if he'd had the capacity for it.

Petra sat. The hall settled. The Summit chair nodded to me. "Luna Zoe, you are recognized for additional remarks if you wish."

I closed the briefcase. Stepped out from behind the podium. Turned so I was facing the assembled Alphas and the Lycan envoy directly.

Colter was to my left now. In my peripheral vision. Close enough that I could smell the cedarwood scent that used to mean home and now just meant distance.

I didn't look at him. I looked at the five Alphas. At Petra. At the Lycan Prince who had gone very still in his elevated seat.

And I spoke.

"I, Zoe Fisher, Luna of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Colter Johnston, as my mate and Alpha."

The bond snapped.

It didn't break quietly. It cracked like bone fracturing under pressure. The sound echoed through the stone hall. I felt it in my chest first—a tearing sensation, visceral and absolute. Then the mark on my neck went cold. Not painful. Just empty. Hollow.

Colter's aura fractured.

I felt that too. Every wolf in the room felt it. The dominant, commanding presence that had filled the space around him since we walked in—it cracked. Visibly. Like watching glass spiderweb under impact.

He staggered. One step back. His hand went to his chest.

I stood perfectly still. My hands loose at my sides. My spine straight. The white dress I'd chosen that morning suddenly felt like armor.

The pain came next. The severing of a bond that had been woven into my biology for seven years. It felt like a blade being pulled from a wound—agonizing, white-hot, every nerve ending screaming. But the bleeding stopped. The constant transmission of his emotions, his desires, his tenderness for someone else—gone. Silent.

I took a breath. It came easier than it had in weeks.

Colter found his voice. "Zoe—" It came out raw. Broken. He stepped toward me.

I didn't move. Didn't look at him. Kept my gaze on the Alphas.

"No." His voice dropped. The Alpha tone started to surface. The command. The compulsion. "You will not—"

"She already did." Petra's voice cut through the hall. Cold. Precise. "The vow is spoken. Witnessed by five Alphas and a Lycan Council envoy. It is binding."

Colter's jaw clenched. His wolf was there behind his eyes. Furious. Desperate. He turned the Alpha tone on me fully. The pressure slammed down on my shoulders. My spine. My lungs.

"Retract it," he commanded. "Now."

My knees buckled. The compulsion was immense. Biological. Every instinct in my body screamed to submit. To obey. To stop this before it went further.

Then something deep inside my chest split open.

It felt like a dam breaking. A river that had been forced underground for seven years suddenly finding the surface. Pressure. Immense and unstoppable. My bones began to ache. My skin felt too tight.

The healer's voice in the back of my mind: *When your wolf comes forward, don't fight her.*

I stopped fighting.

My spine straightened. Not because I chose to. Because something else was choosing. The compulsion shattered against it like water hitting stone.

Colter stepped back. His eyes went wide.

Somewhere in the hall, the Ironveil healer screamed. "Her wolf—it's awakening."

My bones cracked. Reshaped. Silver fur erupted along my arms. My vision sharpened. The scents in the room intensified—cedarwood and fear and stone and something else. Something new. Cedar and thunder. Coming from the elevated seat where the Lycan Prince had risen to his feet.

I met his gaze across the hall. He was staring at me like he'd just found something he'd been searching for his entire life.

Then my wolf surged forward. And the world went white.
