Chapter 2

The healer's den smelled like sage and antiseptic. I lay on the narrow cot with my arm across my eyes, blocking out the overhead light that made my skull ache. My chest felt like someone had wrapped iron bands around my ribs and was tightening them one notch at a time.

The healer moved around the room. I heard glass clinking, the soft scrape of a drawer opening. She'd been quiet since I dragged myself in here three hours ago. Not the comfortable quiet of someone giving you space. The focused quiet of someone working through a problem.

"Sit up," she said finally.

I pushed myself upright. The room tilted. I gripped the edge of the cot until it steadied.

She stood in front of me with a small vial in her hand. Clear liquid. Probably something to dull the pain that kept radiating through the bond like Colter was driving nails into my sternum from a distance. "This will help with the immediate symptoms," she said. "But it won't fix what's wrong."

"I know what's wrong." My voice came out hoarse. "The bond's fracturing."

"No." She set the vial down on the side table. "The bond is fracturing because of what's wrong. Not the other way around."

I looked up at her. She met my gaze without blinking.

"Your energy signature is wrong," she said. "Too large. Too compressed. Like a river that's been forced underground for years." She pulled a stool over and sat down so we were eye level. "I've suspected it since you were twenty. I should have said something then."

My wolf stirred. Not with pain. With pressure. Something immense shifting beneath the surface.

"Suspected what?"

"That your wolf didn't awaken modestly." She leaned forward slightly. "It was suppressed. An Alpha-blood sovereign lineage too immense for a normal emergence. The mate bond's been holding it partially dormant."

The words landed but didn't make sense. I shook my head. "That's not possible. My family—"

"Your family probably didn't know." She stood and crossed to the cabinet on the far wall. Pulled out a leather-bound journal I'd seen her writing in for years. Flipped it open to a page near the back. "I've been documenting unusual biological presentations for thirty years. Your entry is the longest."

She turned the journal toward me. My name sat at the top of the page in her precise handwriting. Below it, notes in medical shorthand I could only half read. Energy compression. Suppressed awakening. Sovereign markers present but dormant.

"Why didn't you tell me?" My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat against my thighs.

"Because you were bonded to an Alpha. Because the bond was stable. Because I thought—" She stopped. Closed the journal. "I thought it would resolve on its own. Or that you'd grow into it gradually. I was wrong."

The pressure in my chest intensified. My wolf pushed against the inside of my ribs like she was testing the bars of a cage she'd just realized was there.

"What happens now?" I asked.

The healer sat back down. Her face was grave. "If the bond is not resolved—severed cleanly or restored fully—it will either kill you or unleash what's been dormant inside you. There is no third option."

I ran my thumb along the inside of my left wrist. The gesture was automatic. The place where the ceremonial cuff used to sit felt bare. Cold.

"How long do I have?"

"Days. Maybe a week." She picked up the vial again and pressed it into my hand. "This will buy you time. Not much."

I looked down at the clear liquid. It caught the light from the overhead lamp. "And if I sever the bond?"

"Then whatever's been held back will come forward. Fast. Possibly violently." She paused. "You'll survive it. But you won't be the same."

I thought of seven years of wolfsbane charms Colter never noticed. Seven years of alliances filed under his name. Seven years of feeling his hand on Skylar's back transmitted through my own chest like a blade.

"Good," I said quietly.

The healer studied me for a long moment. Then she nodded. "You'll need witnesses. The rejection vow doesn't hold unless it's spoken before ranked wolves."

"I know." I stood. My legs felt steadier than they had in days. The pressure in my chest was still there, but it had shifted. Less like pain. More like something coiled and waiting. "The Pack Alliance Summit is in ten days."

Her eyes widened slightly. "Five Alphas. A Lycan Council envoy."

"Yes."

"Zoe—" She stopped. Started again. "If you do this publicly, there's no taking it back. Colter's aura will fracture in front of the entire assembly. The political consequences—"

"Are his problem. Not mine." I picked up my jacket from the chair. The jasmine scent was still on the sleeve where Colter had touched me. I folded it so the scent was on the inside. "Thank you. For the diagnosis. For the record."

She stood. Crossed to her desk and pulled out a sealed envelope. Handed it to me. "This is a copy of your medical file. The full entry. If the Council asks questions, you'll have documentation."

I took it. The envelope was heavier than I expected.

"One more thing," she said as I turned toward the door. "When your wolf comes forward—and she will—don't fight her. She's been waiting a long time."

I nodded. Walked out into the corridor. The pack house was quiet. Most of the wolves were still at the banquet or had gone to bed. I made it back to my workroom without seeing anyone.

The small clay pot of dried wolfsbane sat on the shelf where I'd left it. Labeled in my own handwriting. I picked it up. Turned it over in my hands. Then I set it back down and pulled out the diplomatic briefing files for the Summit.

Ten days. Five Alphas. A Lycan Council envoy.

I opened a fresh page in my notebook and started writing the rejection vow. Word by word. The way I'd always done my most important work.

Thoroughly. And without an audience I needed approval from.
