Chapter 3

"Get out of my line, Daniel," I said, hitting the print-screen shortcut on my keyboard.

"You are making a massive mistake," he shot back, his hands pressing flat against the bulletproof glass.

"The mistake was mine eighteen years ago," I replied. "Window closed."

I reached up and pulled the metal blind down. The heavy shutter slammed against the sill, cutting off his glaring face. Behind the corrugated steel, I heard Sara sobbing and Daniel muttering sharp curses.

I opened my secure drive, pasted the screenshot of Caleb's forged character reference letter, and hit save.

Three hours later, I pushed open the door to my rented single room.

I dropped my keys on the scratched laminate counter. The space was barely larger than a walk-in closet, smelling faintly of cheap bleach and old dust.

I knelt beside the narrow twin bed and dragged out a taped cardboard box.

The rusted tin box sat at the very bottom.

Its metal hinges screeched as I pried the lid open.

Stacks of faded pay stubs filled the cramped space. I bypassed the greasy diner receipts and dug straight to the bottom. My fingers found the stiff, folded hospital invoice.

$11,200.

Paid in twenty-four monthly installments.

I traced the faded black ink. The year Caleb was born. The exact same year Daniel brought a weeping, undocumented Sara Cole into our hallway. "She just needs a place to stay for a bit, Mara," he had begged. Sara took the sunlit spare room. I spent two years rocking Caleb's bassinet in the cramped corner of our drafty master bedroom.

I grabbed my phone and dialed my son's number.

He picked up on the fourth ring. Loud, rhythmic music thumped in the background.

"Mom, I'm working," Caleb said. His tone carried a sharp edge of annoyance.

"Working at the bakery?" I kept my voice perfectly level.

"Yes. Aunt Sara needs help prepping for the morning rush since she's stuck dealing with your stunt at the immigration office."

"My stunt," I repeated. "Did you write a character reference for her state business subsidy?"

Silence stretched over the line. The thumping music muffled slightly, like he had covered the receiver with his palm.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he muttered.

"I have it right in front of me, Caleb. You called her your second mother. You said she struggles without any support."

"She does struggle!" he argued, his voice rising over the background noise. "Dad is the only one who cares about her."

"I paid the mortgage on the house she currently lives in," I said. "I paid for the food she ate for ten years. I paid the hospital bill to bring you into this world."

"Stop throwing money in my face," Caleb snapped. "Aunt Sara actually listens to me. She doesn't just treat me like a financial investment."

"Is that what you think I do?" I gripped the phone tighter.

"You always talk about how much you worked," he said. "Aunt Sara just talks to me. She makes me feel like I belong."

"She makes you feel like you belong in a house I bought," I countered. "And you forged a document for a federal application to help her steal more."

"I didn't forge anything." His voice cracked slightly. "I signed it."

"Do you remember the date on that reference letter?" I asked.

"Does it matter? Leave us alone, Mom."

The line went dead.

I stared at the black screen. A heavy weight pressed against my ribs.

I opened our text thread. My thumbs hit the digital keys with rigid, forceful taps.

"Do you remember the date on that reference letter?" I typed.

I hit send.

A tiny grey indicator popped up instantly beneath the blue bubble.

Read 6:14 PM.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and waited.

One minute passed.

Then two.

No typing bubble appeared. No response came.

He knew exactly what he did. He knew the date he signed that paper was the exact same day he texted me to stop making a scene, the day he told me Aunt Sara sacrificed everything. He just didn't care.

I placed the phone down on the thin blanket. I smoothed out the twenty-four-installment hospital bill and set it next to my work tablet, which currently displayed the screenshot of his letter.

The camera shutter clicked loudly in the quiet room.

I opened my photo gallery, selected the image, and created a new folder. I typed the word Evidence into the title bar and hit save.

My phone buzzed against the mattress, vibrating violently.

An incoming FaceTime call flashed across the screen. Daniel.

I swiped the green icon and held the phone up.

Daniel's face appeared, flushed and sweating. He was walking, the camera shaking with his heavy steps.

"Are you happy now?" he demanded. "Sara is having a panic attack."

"Tell her to breathe into a paper bag," I said. "Why are you calling me on video?"

"Because I want you to see exactly what you are destroying," he spat.

He flipped the camera around.

The screen displayed the spacious living room of the house I had purchased. The cream-colored walls, the stone fireplace I spent three summers working extra shifts to pay off, the large bay windows letting in the evening light.

"We are a family in this house," Daniel's voice echoed from behind the lens. "Caleb is here. Sara is here. You chose to walk away."

"You removed my name from the deed," I corrected. "And you used my son to commit fraud."

"I protected my assets from a bitter woman," he shot back.

"Assets I funded," I said. "You didn't earn a paycheck for the first four years of our marriage."

"I was getting my PhD!" he yelled, the camera jerking wildly. "I am a respected professor now. You are just a clerk stamping papers behind a desk."

"A clerk who just halted your mistress's citizenship," I reminded him.

The camera panned across the polished hardwood floor, moving steadily toward the front window.

"You think holding up one immigration file gives you power over me?" Daniel asked, his tone dripping with arrogance. "I have tenure. I have the house. I have our son."

"You have a stolen house."

"It is legally mine," Daniel said. "And I am making sure you never get a single dime out of it."

The camera stopped panning.

Through the clear glass of the bay window, out on the manicured front lawn, a heavy wooden post had been driven into the grass.

Hanging from the post was a bright red sign with stark white letters reading For Sale.
