My Fiancé Bailed On My Cancer Surgery

9.1 / 10.0
The night before her cancer surgery, her fiancé left with three boxes of condoms and a hollow promise to marry her later. Three years of fighting taught her not to wait. She shredded her wedding dress, sold her company stake, and vanished. A cruel voice message wished her death, but she survived—and found love with the doctor who remembered her favorite candy. Years later, her ex returned, begging. She showed him her ring: "I'm married. Don't come back."

My Fiancé Bailed On My Cancer Surgery Chapter 1

The day before Florence’s cancer surgery, the woman her fiancé had been seeing behind her back asked him to take her abroad. Milani promised him their first night together if he did. Ryatt Murphy booked the next flight out.

Another trip. Another night he would spend with her instead of Florence.

Florence Garza no longer clung to Ryatt like he was her lifeline. She just watched as he packed three boxes of ultra-thin condoms into his suitcase. Before he left, he patted her on the head, as if that made it better. "Don’t read too much into it. I’m just having fun with her. Once you’re back on your feet, we’ll get married."

She’d been living with cancer and its aftermath for three years. She’d heard that promise so many times it had lost all meaning. So when the bridal shop called about her dress, she said, "I changed my mind. I don’t want it."

On the way back to the hospital, she paid off the balance and told them to get rid of the wedding dress—resell it, trash it, she didn’t care. The assistant hesitated. "The gown is already yours, Ms. Garza. If you’d like us to arrange a resale, we’ll need your written authorization. You could sign it when you come in for your final fitting."

Florence could have asked them to email the form. Instead, she found herself wanting one last look at the dress.

Sighing, Florence told the driver to turn around. At the shop, she signed the collection receipt. For now, she would take responsibility for the dress herself. As she was leaving, an employee called after her, "Are you sure you don’t want to try it on?" She was going to say no—until something about the suggestion stuck.

Under the lights, the dress shimmered. For a moment, it stole her breath. She’d first chosen the design before her stomach cancer diagnosis. The order had been put on hold through treatment, then revived whenever she and Ryatt thought the wedding might finally happen. Calls with the designer, revised sketches, another postponed fitting. Her last measurements had been taken months ago, before her latest round of treatment. Now, just as she was ready to give up on the wedding, the gown was finished.

Maybe fate wasn’t done with her and that dress yet, because she found herself trying it on. The result was heartbreaking. The more beautiful the gown, the more it exposed how fragile she’d become. Months of chemo and meds had left her pale—dull skin, hollow cheeks, a wig that never sat quite right. The dress, made to her old measurements, hung loosely on her, making her feel like a child playing dress-up.

Grief crashed over her, and under the staff’s curious stares, she felt stripped bare. She lost track of time until her phone buzzed with Ryatt’s name. "I just remembered your surgery is tomorrow," he said, like he was reminding her about a dentist appointment.

Florence stayed silent. Ryatt picked up on her mood. "Are you upset?" Still nothing. The silence got under his skin, and his patience snapped. "Why are you mad? Am I supposed to be glued to your side 24/7? I’m not a doctor—what good would that do?"

"But you can fly halfway around the world with her?" she shot back. That shut him up—for a second. When he spoke again, his voice was ice. "Florence, you’re too demanding. Most men would’ve walked away the second you got sick. I went out of my way to find you doctors and nutritionists, and I promised to marry you once you’re cured. What more do you want?"

"I can put up with your mood swings, but you’re not royalty. Keep it up, and you’ll end up alone." His rant cut off when a bright, bubbly voice urged him, "Ry, come on! We’re boarding!" Then the line went dead.

The sudden silence hit her like a slap. Florence stood frozen until an employee offered her a tissue. Only then did she realize she was crying. Pulling herself together, she wiped her tears and stepped out of the gown. A pair of fabric scissors lay on the fitting-room counter. Florence picked them up.

“Ms. Garza?” the assistant said.

Florence cut straight through the bodice. Then the skirt. Silk fell at her feet, and the assistant went silent.

It was her dress. She had paid for it. And she would never wear it for him.

The assistant looked from the ruined silk to her face. Florence set the scissors down.

“Throw it away,” she said.

She had an operation tomorrow. Whatever happened afterward, she would not be waiting for Ryatt.
