The Wife He Took for Granted Chapter 1

I left the party two hours early because Peter hadn't answered his goodnight video call.

Marisol tried to stop me at the door with a glass of wine in her hand. "Stella, you're thirty-two, not eighty. One night."

"Logan doesn't know where the inhaler is."

"He's the boy's father."

I took my coat off the hook anyway. Something in my stomach had been sitting wrong all evening, cold and heavy, like I'd swallowed a coin.

The drive home took eighteen minutes. I remember because I watched the clock the whole way.

The house was quiet when I let myself in. Not empty-quiet. The kind of quiet that's holding its breath. Peter's shoes were by the stairs, one tipped over. The kitchen light was off. A single lamp burned in the hall.

Then I heard it.

A sound from upstairs. A rhythm. Wood knocking against a wall.

My hand found the banister. I climbed slowly, and with every step the sound got clearer, and with every step some part of me kept saying *it's the dryer, it's the guest room window, it's anything else.*

I pushed the bedroom door open.

Logan was on my bed. My husband of seven years, his back bare, his hands braced on either side of a woman's head. And under him, hair spread across my pillow, was Annie Delacroix.

Our home nurse. The woman we hired when Logan's mother got sick and never let go of after she died.

She was wearing my nightgown. The blue silk one with the pearl buttons, the one my mother gave me the week Peter was born. It was pushed up around her waist and one strap had slipped off her shoulder.

I don't know how long I stood there.

The room went far away and very small at the same time. My ears filled with a high, thin ringing, like a fork struck against glass. My knees stopped belonging to me. I felt my fingers still curled around the doorknob and I couldn't make them open. Somewhere behind my ribs my heart was slamming so hard it hurt, actual physical hurt, a fist punching outward.

I could smell her perfume. Lily of the valley. The same bottle she'd bought for me last Christmas.

My mouth flooded with saliva and I swallowed it down and my throat made a clicking sound.

Logan turned his head. His mouth opened.

And then, from somewhere near my hip, a small voice.

"Mommy."

Peter was standing in the hallway in his dinosaur pajamas, holding the soccer ball Annie gave him for his fifth birthday. Both arms wrapped around it. His hair was flat on one side from the pillow.

He looked past me. Into the room. At them.

"Mommy, don't be mean to Annie." His chin trembled but he kept going. "She just wants to take care of Daddy."

Something inside me tore. Not a metaphor. I felt it go, a real ripping under my breastbone, and my vision blurred at the edges into gray.

I crouched down and my legs shook so badly I had to put a hand on the floor.

"Baby, go to your room."

"You always yell." He hugged the ball tighter. "Annie says you're tired from work. That's why."

I noticed his fingernails were clean and trimmed. I hadn't cut them. Somebody had cut them.

Behind me, sheets moved. Logan was pulling on his pants, hopping, one leg tangled. He got to the door and grabbed my shoulder.

"Stella. Stella, look at me. This is not—God. This isn't what it looks like."

I stood up. My hand went for the light switch and I flipped it on, and the whole room went bright and ugly, and Annie sat up fast, clutching my nightgown to her chest.

"Then tell me what it looks like," I said. "Use small words. My head's not working."

"I was drinking." His hand raked through his hair. "She came to check on Mom's old prescriptions and I was drinking and it just—it happened. One stupid night."

I heard my own laugh come out of me. It shocked me more than the bed had. Short and dry, like a cough.

There was a phone face-down on the nightstand, a rose-gold case with a chipped corner. Annie's. It buzzed while he was still talking, and the screen lit up against the wood.

I picked it up before she could reach it.

"Stella, don't—"

The thumbprint lock wasn't on. Of course it wasn't. She'd never had to hide anything from me because I'd never once looked.

The message thread was pinned to the top. **L ❤️**

I scrolled up. And up. And up. My thumb went numb and I kept scrolling and the dates kept climbing backward. October. Last March. The summer before that.

*wear the blue one tonight, she never notices*

*Peter called me mama today. don't be mad*

*two years and you still can't say it*

Two years. Twenty-six months of messages. There was a photo of Peter at the aquarium, his hand in hers, and I'd been told he went to the aquarium with Logan.

The phone got heavy. My arm actually dropped, like the weight of it had changed. My eyes went hot and I refused, absolutely refused, to let anything fall out of them in front of her.

"Five years ago," I said.

Logan's face did something. It closed.

"Five years ago I was in a hospital bed with a C-section incision and a newborn, and you told me it was one mistake. One. You cried in the parking lot. You said you'd never see her again." I turned the phone screen toward him. "So explain to me how I'm supposed to hear 'it just happened' tonight and believe a single syllable."

He didn't answer.

That was the loudest part. Not the bed, not the sound in the hallway. The silence where an answer should have been.

Annie pulled the sheet higher. Her eyes were red and her voice came out cracked.

"Stella, I never wanted to take your family."

"You're wearing my nightgown."

"He gave it to me." She was crying now, real tears, sliding fast. "He gave it to me and I said no and he said you'd never wear it again anyway. I tried to leave. Twice. I found another job in Portland last spring and he called my agency and killed the reference." Her hands were shaking around the fabric. "Logan won't let me go. He never has."

I looked at Logan.

He was staring at the carpet with his jaw set, and he did not say *that's a lie.*

My stomach turned over. I made it two steps back into the hall before it settled.

Peter was still standing there with his soccer ball.

I knelt in front of my son. I put both hands on his small warm shoulders and I made my voice as steady as I have ever made anything.

"Peter. Get your backpack. We're going to Grandma's tonight."

"Is Annie coming?"

"No."

"Then I don't want to go."

"Sweetheart—" I reached for his hand. My fingers closed around his wrist, and it was so thin, and it was so easy, and I thought that was that.

He yanked away.

He ran past me, past his father, straight to the bed, and buried his face against Annie's shoulder. She caught him automatically. The soccer ball rolled off the mattress and thudded onto the floor and rocked back and forth by my foot.

Her hand came up and stroked his hair. She knew exactly where to put it. She'd done it a thousand times.

I couldn't feel my hands. There was a rushing in my ears like standing under a bridge. My chest wouldn't fill all the way, every breath stopping halfway up, and I stood there in the doorway of my own bedroom watching my child choose someone else.

I turned around.

I made it to the top of the stairs before Logan spoke, and his voice had changed. It wasn't panicked anymore. It was flat. Almost bored.

"Peter needs a mother who actually understands him now."

I stopped with my hand on the railing.

"Say that again."

"You heard me." A pause. "You're never here, Stella. She is."

I went down the stairs. I don't remember doing it. I remember the front door and the cold coming in and my keys in my fist with the metal biting my palm, and I remember thinking, very clearly, that there was no room left in that house with my name on it.

I got in the car. I didn't start it.

My phone was still in my coat pocket, and when I pulled it out to call my mother, the screen was already lit.

One new message. From Annie's number.

A photo. Peter, asleep in my bed, tucked under my duvet.

And underneath it, three words: **Come get him.**
