Chapter 5

POV: Claire

Room 3 had a round table, four plastic chairs, a bin of crayons, and a clock above the door that ticked loud enough to hear from the hallway.

I'd brought two things. Ben's navy rain jacket, the one with the reflective stripe he'd left in my car the week before all this, and a copy of *The Mouse and the Motorcycle* with the spine split down the middle. He'd made me read chapter six so many times the pages fell open there on their own.

The supervisor was a woman in her fifties named Tanya Russo. She had a clipboard, a lanyard, and a kind, unreadable face. She sat in the corner chair and uncapped her pen.

At 10:02, the door opened, and Ben came in.

He'd gotten a haircut. Someone had used gel on the front, the way Allison liked it.

I stood and held out my hand, palm up, not reaching for him. Just there if he wanted it.

He looked at it, then at the bag on the table.

"Did you bring my spare charger? The white one. It's in the drawer by your bed."

I lowered my hand slowly.

"I didn't, bud. I brought your jacket. You left it in my car."

He took it and put it on the back of his chair without putting it on. He didn't sit.

I pulled the chair out a little and turned it so he wouldn't have his back to the door. He always hated that, even at restaurants.

"You don't have to hug me," I said. "I'm still glad to see you."

He sat down. His sneakers didn't quite reach the floor, and he hooked them around the chair legs.

I didn't have candy in my bag, or a new game, or a toy from the gift shop downstairs. Mara had asked me if I wanted to bring something special, and I'd said no. I didn't want him to learn that seeing me came with a prize.

I opened the book to chapter six.

"'Ralph had never been so happy in his life,'" I read. "'The motorcycle went faster and faster down the hall...'"

The clock ticked. Tanya's pen moved. Ben picked a red crayon out of the bin and rolled it back and forth under his palm.

I read half a page. He used to mouth the next line before I got to it. Today he didn't, but at the part where Ralph crashes into the laundry, I saw the corner of his mouth move.

Then the crayon stopped rolling.

"Mom."

I kept my finger on the line. "Yeah?"

"Why won't you just say it?"

I looked up. He was staring at the crayon.

"Say what, honey?"

"Could you just say you pushed me, Mom?" His voice came out fast, like he'd practiced it. "Then Allison won't have to leave. And we won't have to come here anymore. Daddy says this place is only for people who are in trouble."

In the corner, Tanya's pen paused, then started again.

I knew what I could say. *So it didn't happen. So you lied.* It was right there, and somebody with a clipboard was writing everything down.

I didn't say it. He was eight, and he was gripping that crayon so hard the paper was tearing.

"I hear you," I said. "You want everybody to stop being upset. I want that too."

He nodded quickly, hopeful.

"But I won't tell people something happened when it didn't. Not even to make things easier. Not even for you." I closed the book over my finger to keep the place. "That's not because I don't love you. It's because I do."

His face crumpled a little, then went flat. He put the crayon back in the bin and pulled his jacket off the chair and into his lap.

"Can I go now?"

Tanya glanced at the clock. "You've got forty minutes left, Ben. It's up to you."

He didn't answer. I opened the book again and kept reading, softly, to a boy who wasn't listening. On her form, Tanya wrote one more line and underlined it.

The conference room at Moreau's firm was all glass and pale wood, with a bowl of green apples nobody touched.

Ryan sat across from me. Allison sat beside him, which nobody explained. She wore a cream blouse and had her hands folded on the table like she'd been invited.

Daniel Moreau slid a document across the wood. Yellow tabs stuck out of the side, each one printed with an arrow and SIGN HERE.

"This is a proposed stipulation," he said. "It resolves the motion without a contested hearing. Once it's entered, my client is open to discussing additional time."

"Open to discussing," Mara repeated.

"In good faith."

I turned to the first tab.

*Respondent acknowledges that on the evening of the incident she caused physical harm to the minor child.* Below that: *Respondent consents to supervised contact for a period of not less than twenty-four months, subject to the discretion of Petitioner.*

Twenty-four months. Ben would be ten. And after that, it would still be up to Ryan.

"This isn't a settlement," I said. "It's a confession with a calendar attached."

"It's a way out," Allison said gently. "For everyone. Ben told me he hates that room. Wouldn't this be the calmest way to end it?"

I looked at her. She looked back, sympathetic and patient, wearing my cardigan's twin in a different color.

Ryan uncapped a pen and set it on the document, then pushed it until it touched my hand.

"Sign it, Claire. You can see him more often once you stop fighting."

"Where does it say that?" Mara asked.

Ryan frowned. "What?"

"More often. Where is that in here?" She flipped pages without looking down. "I see twenty-four months minimum. I see 'Petitioner's discretion.' I don't see a single extra hour promised. So let's not tell my client things are agreed when they aren't. Mr. Moreau knows better."

Moreau's face didn't change. "The intent is clear."

"Intent doesn't go in front of a judge. Paper does."

Ryan leaned forward. "She told him no, Mara. Today. Ben begged her, and she told him no. What kind of mother does that?"

So he'd already heard. Of course he had.

I picked up the pen. Ryan's shoulders came down a little.

Then I laid it back on the table, parallel to the document, and took my hand away.

"The kind who won't teach him that lying fixes things," I said.

Mara's phone lit up on the table beside her laptop. She glanced at it, and something in her face sharpened. She opened the laptop and typed, fast.

"Hold on," she said. "Confirmation from the camera company. Full original files, preserved and delivered. Metadata attached."

Ryan sat very still.

Mara turned the screen slightly toward me. It was a frozen frame from above our front door. The porch light, the mat with the chipped corner, and Ryan, one foot on the step, his keys already in his hand.

In the corner, white digits: **7:48:13 PM.**

I pulled his declaration out of my folder and turned to page four. I didn't need to search for it. I'd read it a hundred times.

*At approximately 7:42 p.m., I personally witnessed Claire push Benjamin.*

Six minutes.

I set the page on top of the unsigned stipulation and turned the laptop so it faced the center of the table, where everyone could see it.

Allison's hands came apart. Moreau leaned in, reading glasses halfway up his nose.

"Ryan," I said. "Before you say anything else, look at page four. Look at your own signature."

He didn't look at the page. He was looking at the screen.

"That timestamp could be wrong," he said. "Those cameras drift."

"Maybe," Mara said evenly. "That's why we don't use clips."

I rested my finger beside the trackpad, the cursor sitting on the play button.

"Before I sign anything," I said, "we are going to watch the original."
