Chapter 1

Two seats stayed empty while I raised my right hand and became a U.S. citizen.

My husband, Matt, had taken our six-year-old son to cheer for his first love's daughter at a state dance final.

He never told me they were skipping my ceremony.

Ollie video-called five minutes before the oath and said, “Daddy says your paper thing is fast.”

Then he repeated something worse: “Vanessa is more like a mom today because she's here with us.”

Behind him, Matt was fixing Vanessa's dress strap.

Afterward, Vanessa posted a smiling photo of the four of them and called them her “family support crew.”

I went home to Bella's celebration cake, set my citizenship certificate beside the takeout boxes, and listened while Matt told me I had chosen paperwork over my family.

So I stopped arguing.

I moved my paycheck, removed myself from his company's bilingual accounts, and signed a lease twelve minutes from our son's school.

Matt thought I was punishing him.

Ollie thought Mommy would still be on call.

Neither of them understood that I had already left the version of our family where my love meant I could be erased.

"Daddy said your paper thing is really fast," Ollie's voice chirped through the phone speaker.

"Just raise your hand, say yes, and it's over," my son continued, holding the phone too close to his chin.

I gripped the edge of the plastic folding chair I had guarded for the last hour. The seat next to it sat equally bare.

"Where are you, Ollie?" I asked.

"At the dance finals!" He spun the camera around, showing a glittering banner hanging from the ceiling. Bella's state competition.

I had spent my entire morning confirming Spanish contract terms for Matt's biggest client. I had packed Ollie's ear muffs and his asthma inhaler into his blue backpack. I assumed they were stuck in traffic on Interstate 95.

"Why didn't anyone tell me you were going to the finals?" I asked.

Ollie looked off-camera. His eyes darted to the side, and he recited a line that clearly did not belong to a seven-year-old.

"Vanessa is more like a mom today because she's here with us."

The words hit me like a physical strike. The camera wobbled, panning just enough to catch Matt. My husband stood beside Vanessa, Bella's mother. His hands were busy adjusting the thin rhinestone strap of Vanessa's dress, his fingers brushing her bare shoulder.

"Matt," I said loudly.

"Elena, don't make things complicated in front of the kid," Matt said, his tone flat. "We'll see you at home."

"You promised you would be here," I pushed back. "You promised you would sit in these chairs."

"Bella needed us," he answered, already looking away from the lens. "I have to go. They're calling her age group."

A court official directed us to stand. I raised my right hand, swore the oath, and became an American citizen. When the ceremony ended, families rushed the aisles. Bouquets of flowers blocked my view. Husbands kissed wives. Children hugged their parents.

A photographer approached me, his heavy camera raised. "Gather your family in?"

"They couldn't make it," I told him.

When the photographer walked away, the auditorium emptied quickly. I stood alone in the aisle. The celebratory chatter of other families faded into the lobby. I gathered my purse and walked into the echoing tiled bathroom down the hall. I locked myself in the furthest stall.

My phone buzzed against my palm. A notification from Vanessa's social media profile popped onto the screen.

A selfie filled my display. Vanessa, Bella in her sequined dance costume, Matt, and Ollie. They were all smiling wide. Matt had his arm slung casually around Vanessa's waist.

The caption read: Best family support crew.

I opened my banking app. I selected the joint account where I deposited my paychecks from my freelance translation jobs. I typed in the full amount and transferred every cent to my personal savings account.

Next, I logged into the Carter Renovation client portal via my mobile browser. For three years, I had run Matt's bilingual administration for free, translating documents and expanding his business into new neighborhoods. I navigated to the user settings, found my profile, and clicked Revoke Access. The screen refreshed, locking me out.

Finally, I opened my email. I searched for a draft I had abandoned three months ago after a brief consultation with a family lawyer named Davis.

I tapped the screen and typed a single sentence.

Please start preparing for separation.

I hit send. None of this was an empty threat meant to force an apology. It was an execution of terms.

I left the bathroom, sliding my new citizenship certificate into a hard-shell folder. On my way out of the auditorium, I stopped by the front row. I pulled out my phone and snapped one photo of the two empty chairs.

That evening, the heavy scent of vanilla frosting hit me the second I pushed open the front door.

A massive sheet cake sat on the dining table, spelled out in thick pink icing: Congratulations Bella!

Ollie sat on a wooden stool, swinging his legs. He hopped down when he saw me, holding out a sugar star plucked from the cake's border.

"You can celebrate a little too," he offered, his small hand extended.

I took the star, resting my hand on his head. "Thank you, sweetie. Go watch your cartoon."

Footsteps sounded from the kitchen. Matt walked in, wiping his hands on a dish towel. He stopped when he saw me standing by the table.

"You're late," Matt said, tossing the towel onto the granite counter. "You missed the cake cutting."

I set the hard-shell folder on the table, right next to a greasy takeout box. "You missed my naturalization ceremony."

Matt rolled his eyes, leaning against the kitchen island. "Are we really doing this right now? You chose a piece of paper over being with your family."

"I chose the oath I worked five years for," I replied, keeping my voice level. "The one we had on the calendar for six months."

"Bella's state finals can't be redone, Elena," he shot back, his voice rising in defense. "Your thing was just a formality. You could have rescheduled. Instead, you made Bella feel like you don't care about her."

"Did she feel that way?" I asked. "Or did Vanessa tell you she felt that way?"

Matt frowned, stepping forward. "Don't bring Vanessa into this. She stepped up today when you decided to be selfish."

"Yes, selfish," he insisted. "You knew how important this dance was to Bella."

"I'm moving out this weekend," I said.

Matt stared at me. He blinked once, then let out a short, dismissive laugh.

"Right. You're trying to prove a point." He crossed his arms over his chest. "You wouldn't really leave over today."

I picked up my certificate from the table. My fingers traced the gold seal pressed into the thick paper.

"It's not over today," I told him, meeting his gaze squarely. "It's because today finally made me see every yesterday."

"Stop acting crazy," Matt warned, his tone dropping into a low reprimand. "You're upset about Vanessa being in the picture. I get it. But Bella needed her mom."

"And Ollie needed his," I countered. "But you let Vanessa feed him lines to hurt me on a video call. You stood there and adjusted her dress while my son told me someone else was a better mother."

"She didn't feed him anything!" Matt yelled. "He's a kid, he just says things!"

"My lawyer will send you the childcare arrangements tomorrow morning," I said, cutting off his excuses entirely.

Matt's arms dropped to his sides. His face went pale. "Lawyer? What the hell are you talking about?"

"I revoked my access to the company portal as well," I added. "You'll need to hire a translator for the Martinez account by Monday."

"Elena, stop." He reached out, grabbing my wrist. "You're taking this way too far."

I pulled my arm out of his grip.

I turned my back on him and walked straight toward the hallway closet. I reached past the winter coats, pulled out my large gray suitcase, and unzipped it right there on the hardwood floor.
