Chapter 2

At 8:15 a.m. the next morning, my phone vibrated against the kitchen counter.

An email from Matt lit up the screen. He had forwarded the Alvarez account meeting link.

"Can you jump on this call at ten? Just need twenty minutes of help," his message read.

I opened my billing software. I generated a formal invoice for freelance interpretation services, set the rate at one hundred and fifty dollars an hour, and attached the document to my reply.

"My free commercial services are no longer available. Please sign the rate agreement to proceed." I hit send.

Forty minutes later, the front door swung open. Matt marched down the hallway and tossed his keys onto the island.

"Are you trying to tank my company now?" he demanded.

I reached into my work tote, pulled out a thick blue binder, and dropped it onto the granite surface. The heavy thud echoed through the kitchen.

"These are the original bilingual contracts and project templates I designed," I told him. "Starting today, Carter Renovation cannot use them to update client files without my written authorization."

Matt stared at the blue plastic cover. His jaw worked tight. "You're stealing my operational assets because you're mad about a dance competition?"

"I am not taking your clients," I replied, sliding the binder back into my bag. "I am withdrawing my professional labor from my list of wifely duties."

A chair scraped across the hardwood floor. Ollie sat at the dining table, dragging a fork through a massive slice of Bella's leftover pink cake.

"Mom," Ollie chewed loudly, pointing his fork at me. "Are you doing my Family Heritage poster today?"

I zipped my tote bag closed. "Ask Daddy to help you. That assignment is due next week, which falls during his parenting time."

Ollie dropped his fork. It clattered against the ceramic plate.

"Vanessa helped Bella with her poster," Ollie snapped, his small face twisting into a scowl. "Vanessa acted like a real mom yesterday. You just leave."

The kitchen grew silent. Matt leaned against the counter, crossing his arms over his chest. He made no move to correct our son.

"He is expressing his disappointment," Matt offered, his voice laced with condescension. "Stop making a seven-year-old pay the price for our marriage problems, Elena."

I walked over to the table and crouched down to Ollie's eye level. He refused to look at me, keeping his gaze fixed on the smeared frosting.

"Look at me, Ollie," I said.

He shifted his eyes toward mine.

"You do not have to take responsibility for this divorce," I told him, keeping my tone steady and clear. "But using another woman's name to punish me is your own choice. You will need to learn not to do that."

Ollie blinked, the defiance draining from his small shoulders.

Matt stepped forward, his boots heavy on the floor. "You don't talk to him like that."

I stood up. "Someone has to parent him."

At two o'clock that afternoon, I sat in a sterile leasing office and signed a twelve-month contract for a two-bedroom apartment. The building sat exactly twelve minutes from Ollie's elementary school.

I returned to the house and packed. I filled three cardboard boxes with my personal identification, my recording equipment, and my mother's cedar document box. In a separate yellow folder, I compiled a complete copy of Ollie's asthma action plan, his pediatrician records, and his school schedule.

I placed the yellow folder on the kitchen island.

Matt walked in from the garage. His eyes landed on the white paper sticking out of my purse. The bold black letters at the top read: Residential Lease Agreement.

His casual, irritated posture vanished. He reached for the paper, but I pulled my purse away.

"You actually signed a lease," Matt said. The volume of his voice dropped, losing its previous edge. "Elena, stop this. Ollie needs a complete family."

I picked up a roll of packing tape. "A complete family is not a house where one person swallows pain forever just to maintain the exterior."

"We can go to counseling," he pushed, stepping closer to the island. "You don't just blow up a marriage over one missed ceremony."

"You missed a lot more than a ceremony," I answered, tearing a strip of tape and sealing a cardboard box. "The temporary parenting schedule is in that yellow folder. We handle our own time blocks. If there is a medical emergency, you still call me directly."

Matt stared at the folder. He ran a hand through his hair, his mouth opening to argue, but I carried the sealed box past him and set it by the front door.

By eight o'clock that evening, my suitcase sat next to the boxes.

I walked into Ollie's bedroom. He stood in front of his half-empty closet, staring at the bare hangers where my winter coats used to hang.

He turned around, clutching a stuffed bear to his chest.

"Are you going to wake me up on Monday?" he asked, his voice shaking.

I knelt on the carpet. "No. Monday is Daddy's morning. I will pick you up from the school pickup line on Wednesday."

Tears spilled over his cheeks. He threw the bear onto the floor.

"Then you are just throwing us away!" he cried out.

A shadow shifted in the hallway. Matt leaned against the doorframe, watching me. His expression carried a silent, heavy expectation. He was waiting for me to cave. He was waiting for me to unpack my bags, wipe Ollie's tears, and promise I would never leave.

I wrapped my arms around Ollie's small shoulders and pulled him tight against my chest.

"I love you," I whispered into his hair. "My love for you does not leave."

I did not say I would come back.

Ollie stopped fighting my grip. He went entirely still. In the doorway, Matt stood frozen. The realization settled over both of them in real time. My presence in this house was no longer a rope they could tie back into place with a child's tears.

I released Ollie, tucked him into his bed, and walked past Matt without a single word.

I sat on the living room sofa, pulled out my phone, and downloaded the court-approved co-parenting application my lawyer had recommended.

I created a profile. I entered Matt's email address and sent the invitation.

Under the schedule tab, I typed out the exact time the moving truck would arrive tomorrow morning. I added a checklist for Ollie's inhaler handoff. I finalized the temporary custody blocks, leaving zero room for either of them to brush my departure off as a temporary emotional flare-up.

I pressed publish.

A green checkmark flashed on my screen, followed immediately by a loud, sharp chime from Matt's phone in the next room.
