Chapter 3

The Langford Hotel looked like the kind of place where scandals were born politely.

Gold light spilled across marble floors. Waiters moved between guests with silver trays and practiced smiles. Women in silk gowns laughed softly beside men who wore watches expensive enough to pay my employees’ salaries for a year. From the outside, it was just another charity gala full of rich people pretending they cared more about the cause than the guest list.

To me, it was a crime scene before the crime had even happened.

I stood near the ballroom entrance with a glass of untouched champagne in my hand and Daniel’s tiny recording device clipped under the neckline of my dress.

“Evelyn.”

Ryan’s voice slid behind me like a hand around my throat.

I turned slowly.

He looked perfect, of course.

Dark suit. Warm eyes. Concerned husband smile.

The same man who had once remembered to warm my hands when we walked through Central Park in December.

The same man who had spent the last few weeks arranging to make me look like an unfaithful, unstable wife.

“You made it,” he said.

“You sound surprised.”

“Not surprised.” He stepped closer and brushed his thumb lightly over my wrist. “Relieved. I know these events have been difficult since your father passed.”

The tenderness in his voice almost made me sick.

I looked at his hand on my skin.

“How thoughtful of you.”

His eyes narrowed for half a second.

Then he smiled again.

“Always.”

A photographer called our names.

“Mr. and Mrs. Walker, this way!”

Ryan’s arm slid around my waist before I could move.

He pulled me gently against him.

To everyone else, it must have looked loving.

To me, it felt like being posed beside my executioner.

“Smile,” he murmured.

I looked into the camera.

“I am.”

The flash went off.

Ryan kissed my temple.

Another flash.

The crowd adored us.

The perfect husband.

The grieving heiress.

A marriage surviving tragedy.

If only they knew tragedy was standing in a tailored suit with his hand on my waist.

After the photos, Ryan handed me another glass of champagne.

“You barely touched the first one.”

“I’m not drinking tonight.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t want to.”

His smile stayed in place, but his tone changed.

“Evelyn.”

That one word used to work on me.

It used to soften me immediately, because Ryan always said my name like I was something precious he was trying to protect from myself.

Now I heard the command underneath.

“I said no,” I replied.

For a moment, we simply looked at each other.

Then he laughed.

“Fine. CEO Evelyn is very strict tonight.”

“She should have been strict sooner.”

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

Before he could press further, Sophia appeared beside him in a silver dress that made her look like she belonged under a spotlight.

“Babe,” she said, reaching for my hand. “You look stunning.”

I let her touch me.

Barely.

“Thank you.”

Her eyes softened beautifully.

Sophia had always been good at looking sincere.

“I was so worried after those articles,” she said. “People are disgusting. I told Ryan we should sue.”

“How loyal.”

She blinked.

Ryan’s gaze moved between us.

Sophia gave a small laugh.

“Of course I’m loyal. You’re my best friend.”

I looked at her face and remembered her voice through the office door.

Poor Evelyn. Daddy’s dead, the board hates her, and her perfect husband is the only thing holding her together.

My fingers tightened around the stem of my glass.

“Right,” I said. “Best friend.”

Sophia leaned closer.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

Her expression changed.

Ryan immediately stepped in.

“Evelyn hasn’t been sleeping.”

“I didn’t ask you,” I said.

The words came out sharper than planned.

Sophia froze.

Ryan’s smile vanished for exactly one second.

Then he placed a gentle hand on my shoulder.

“Sweetheart, maybe you should rest.”

There it was.

The opening.

The soft push toward the trap.

I could almost see the path he wanted me to follow.

Tired wife.

Concerned husband.

Private suite upstairs.

Hired man enters.

Photos. Evidence. Headlines. Divorce. Inheritance.

My life ruined cleanly enough for Ryan to wash his hands afterward.

“You’re probably right,” I said.

Ryan’s eyes flickered.

He recovered quickly.

“I booked you a suite upstairs in case you needed a break.”

“How considerate.”

“I know how these events drain you.”

Sophia touched my arm.

“I can go with you.”

“No,” Ryan said too quickly.

Sophia looked at him.

He smiled.

“She needs quiet. Don’t hover.”

I almost laughed.

Quiet.

Yes.

Nothing said quiet like sending a drugged stranger into my room.

My phone vibrated in my clutch.

Daniel.

Target approaching hotel. Do not go upstairs yet.

I read the message without changing my expression.

Ryan watched me.

“Who is that?”

“Board member.”

“Tonight?”

“Companies don’t stop burning because people put on evening gowns.”

He chuckled.

“My wife, the warrior.”

My wife.

The words felt like chains.

A second message arrived.

We need five minutes. Stay visible.

Five minutes.

I could do five minutes.

Then Ryan leaned in.

“Go upstairs now, Evelyn.”

It wasn’t loud.

It wasn’t harsh.

But it was not a suggestion anymore.

I looked up at him.

“Why are you so eager to get rid of me?”

His eyes held mine.

“Because you’re pale, and I’m worried.”

“Are you?”

“Of course.”

“You’ve been worried a lot lately.”

“My wife has been spiraling since her father died. So yes, I’m worried.”

There it was again.

The story.

The one he was building around me before the evidence existed.

I glanced toward the far corner of the ballroom.

Daniel stood near a pillar, speaking into his phone.

His face was tense.

Something was wrong.

Ryan followed my gaze.

“Who are you looking at?”

“No one.”

His hand tightened on my elbow.

“Evelyn.”

“Ryan.”

We stared at each other, both smiling for the people around us, both lying through our teeth.

Then Sophia stepped closer and whispered, “Maybe you should listen to your husband.”

I turned to her.

For a moment I wanted to tell her everything.

That I knew.

That I had heard her.

That one day, very soon, she would regret ever touching what belonged to me.

Instead, I smiled.

“You’re right. A good wife should listen.”

Ryan relaxed.

Sophia smiled too.

Neither of them noticed that my hand was already opening Daniel’s message thread.

I typed quickly inside my clutch.

I’m going up. Be ready.

Daniel’s response came almost immediately.

No. Wait.

But I was already walking.

Because I understood something Daniel didn’t.

Ryan was watching me too closely.

If I refused now, he would know.

If he knew, he would change the plan.

And if he changed the plan, I might never get another chance to expose him.

So I went upstairs.

The elevator doors closed on the sound of gala music and polite laughter.

For a few seconds, I could see my reflection in the mirrored wall.

A woman in a black dress.

Red lipstick.

Diamond earrings that had belonged to her mother.

A recording device hidden against her skin.

Fear sitting behind her eyes like a secret.

I pressed my palm against my stomach and forced myself to breathe.

“You wanted proof,” I whispered to myself. “So get proof.”

When the doors opened on the executive floor, the hallway was empty.

Too quiet.

The carpet swallowed my footsteps as I walked toward the suite Ryan had arranged.

Room 2806.

The door opened with the key card he had given me.

Inside, the suite was beautiful in the cold, expensive way hotel rooms always were. White flowers on the table. City lights beyond the windows. A bottle of champagne chilling beside two glasses.

Two glasses.

I looked at them for a long moment.

Then I took out my phone.

No signal.

Of course.

My stomach tightened.

I moved toward the window and tried again.

Still nothing.

I walked back toward the door.

The handle didn’t move.

Locked.

Not from the inside.

From the system.

For one second, all the air left my lungs.

Then the lights flickered.

I froze.

The sound of a key card beep came from the hallway.

Someone was outside.

My heart slammed so hard it hurt.

I backed away from the door, fingers closing around the small pepper spray Daniel had given me.

The door opened.

A man stumbled inside.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dark hair falling over his forehead.

His black suit looked expensive, but his tie had been loosened and his white shirt clung to his body with sweat.

He shut the door behind him with one hand and leaned against it as if standing upright required every ounce of control he had left.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he lifted his head.

His eyes met mine.

Blue.

Sharp.

Furious.

Not the dull, greedy eyes of the man Daniel had described.

Not a street criminal.

Not some disposable thug Ryan found through a shell account.

This man looked like he belonged in boardrooms, not police reports.

I raised the pepper spray.

“Don’t come any closer.”

He looked at the bottle in my hand and laughed once, harshly.

“Trust me, sweetheart, I’m trying very hard not to.”

His voice was low and rough, scraped thin by pain.

I swallowed.

“Who are you?”

He dragged a hand down his face.

“Wrong question.”

“What?”

“The better question is why the hell someone sent me here drugged out of my mind.”

My grip tightened.

Drugged.

So Ryan had done it.

He had actually done it.

“You need to leave,” I said.

“I would love to.”

“Then leave.”

He turned the handle.

Nothing happened.

His jaw clenched.

“Door’s locked.”

“I know.”

His gaze snapped back to me.

“You know?”

“I mean I just found out.”

He stared at me as if deciding whether I was lying.

Then another wave of whatever drug he’d been given hit him.

His shoulders went rigid.

His breathing grew heavier.

He stepped back from me so abruptly he hit the door.

“Stay on that side of the room.”

I froze.

“What?”

“I said stay there.”

His voice was sharp now, but not cruel.

Controlled.

Barely.

I should have been terrified.

I was terrified.

But there was something in the way he kept himself pressed against the door, as far from me as possible, that made my fear shift into confusion.

Ryan had hired this man to assault me.

So why did he look like he was fighting himself to protect me?

“Did Ryan send you?” I asked.

The man’s expression darkened.

“Who the hell is Ryan?”

“My husband.”

His eyes narrowed.

“I don’t know your husband.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t care what you believe.”

He looked away again, jaw flexing.

“Someone drugged me at the private bar downstairs. A man told me there was a doctor in this suite. I came here because I was trying not to collapse in public.”

My mind raced.

A doctor?

Private bar?

That didn’t fit.

Nothing fit.

“You’re lying.”

He laughed again, but this time it sounded almost breathless.

“If I were lying, I’d come up with something less humiliating.”

He pushed away from the door, then immediately stopped when I raised the pepper spray higher.

“Relax.”

“Don’t tell me to relax.”

“Fair enough.”

He looked around the suite.

“Do you have a phone that works?”

“No signal.”

“Of course there isn’t.”

He muttered something under his breath, then pulled his phone from his pocket.

The screen lit up.

One notification flashed across it before he turned it away.

But I saw the name.

Blackwood Global Emergency Security Line

My breath caught.

Blackwood.

No.

No, that was impossible.

I stared at his face again.

The sharp jaw.

The dark hair.

The eyes I had seen on magazine covers and business news segments.

New York’s most photographed billionaire CEO.

The heir to Blackwood Global.

Alexander Blackwood.

My husband had hired a man he thought was some nameless thug.

But the man standing in front of me was one of the most powerful CEOs in America.

Alexander saw the recognition in my face.

His expression turned colder.

“So you do know who I am.”

“I just figured it out.”

“That’s not comforting.”

“I didn’t invite you here.”

“And I didn’t plan to spend my night trapped in a hotel suite with a woman holding pepper spray like she’s negotiating with a raccoon.”

Despite everything, a startled laugh escaped me.

It was small.

Wrong.

Hysterical.

His mouth twitched once, like he might have smiled if he weren’t in visible agony.

Then he staggered.

I took one step forward instinctively.

He immediately raised a hand.

“Don’t.”

I stopped.

His breathing was getting worse.

Sweat rolled down the side of his face.

His fingers curled into his palm hard enough to turn his knuckles white.

“What did they give you?” I asked.

“I don’t know.”

“You need a doctor.”

“I know.”

“Then we have to get out.”

“Brilliant idea. Door’s locked, phones are jammed, and I’m about ten minutes away from losing the last piece of my self-control.”

The bluntness made my stomach twist.

I lifted the pepper spray again.

His eyes flicked to it.

“If I lose control,” he said, voice suddenly quieter, “use it.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Use it. Aim for my eyes. Then run if the door opens.”

A strange silence filled the room.

This man, drugged and trapped, had just told me how to hurt him if he became dangerous.

That was not what Ryan’s hired criminal was supposed to do.

I lowered the pepper spray slightly.

“You really don’t know Ryan.”

“No.”

“And you didn’t come here for me.”

His gaze held mine.

“No.”

For the first time that night, I believed him.

Not completely.

But enough.

Then footsteps sounded outside the door.

Both of us went still.

A voice came through the hallway.

Ryan.

“Evelyn?”

My blood turned to ice.

Alexander looked at me.

“That your husband?”

I nodded.

Ryan knocked softly.

“Sweetheart, open the door.”

Alexander’s eyes sharpened, even through the haze of the drug.

“He locked us in and now he’s pretending he can’t get in?”

I whispered, “He wants photos.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

Ryan knocked again.

“Evelyn, are you okay?”

Alexander stared at the door.

Then back at me.

In that moment, despite the drug, despite the pain, despite the fact that we were strangers trapped in a nightmare, I saw something cold and lethal settle behind his eyes.

“Your husband,” he said quietly, “just made a very expensive mistake.”

Ryan called again from the hallway.

“Evelyn?”

I looked at Alexander Blackwood, the man my husband had mistaken for a disposable pawn, and realized Ryan had not simply set a trap for me.

He had stepped into one himself.
