Chapter 2

The house smelled like garlic and rosemary when we walked in, but Grayson didn't cook. He never had. A caterer from town had come and gone before we arrived, leaving trays covered in foil on the kitchen island, and Grayson lit two candles like he'd made the meal himself. I didn't say anything. I sat down across from him at the long table and watched the ocean go dark through the window.

He waited until I had a forkful of salmon halfway to my mouth.

"I think you should make a statement," he said. "About Leighton."

I set my fork down. "What kind of statement."

"Something that clears the air. That you regret how the allegations came across. That it was grief talking, not malice." He said it the way he announced quarterly numbers to his board — flat, reasonable, already decided. "For the sake of family unity. We need to move forward, Reagan."

The candle between us flickered. I looked at him for a long moment, at the face I used to reach for in the dark, and I felt nothing but a strange, clean stillness.

"No," I said. Just that. One word, quiet, final.

His jaw worked. "She's been through enough."

"So has my mother," I said. "Except she's not here to be through anything."

Something shifted behind his eyes. Not anger, exactly — anger I could have handled, anger was familiar. This was colder. He stood up so smoothly that his chair didn't even scrape the floor, and he came around the table and took my wrist. Not hard. Not yet.

"Come outside," he said. "Let's talk where it's quiet."

I should have said no. I think some part of me already knew, walking across the cool grass in the dark with his hand around my wrist, exactly where we were going. The pool lights were on, turning the water a soft, glowing blue, and the moment I understood — really understood — my whole body locked up.

"Grayson." My voice came out smaller than I wanted.

"You know I hate this too," he said, like he was the one being wronged. "But you're making this so much harder than it needs to be."

He knew. He knew about the lake when I was seven, the ice that gave way, the eleven seconds my father counted before he pulled me out. I'd told him that story on our third date, crying a little, and he'd held my hand across the table and said, *I'll never let anything like that happen to you again.* I believed him. That was the worst part. I believed him for six years.

His hand found the back of my neck.

"Grayson, don't —"

He pushed.

The water closed over my head and every rational thought I owned dissolved into pure animal panic. I clawed at his arm, at the tiled edge, at nothing. Chlorine burned up my nose. My lungs screamed. I could hear my own pulse roaring in my ears, and above it, muffled through the water, I could feel more than hear him saying something, low and steady, like he was soothing a spooked horse.

I don't know how long it was. Long enough that my thrashing turned to something smaller, weaker, my hands slipping instead of grabbing. Long enough that some cold, clinical part of my brain — the part that reads vitals off a monitor — started counting down the seconds until unconsciousness the way I would for a patient.

Then he pulled me up.

I came up choking, water streaming off my face, my whole body shaking so hard I could hear my teeth. He held my shoulders, not gently, and put his face close to mine.

"Think about the apology," he said. "That's all I'm asking."

I didn't answer. I couldn't. My throat felt scraped raw from the inside. He let go of me like the conversation was finished, straightened his shirt, and walked back toward the house like a man who'd just closed a difficult meeting.

I stood there in the blue light a long moment, dripping, my chest heaving. Then I walked inside too, past the candles still burning on the table, up the stairs to the guest bedroom, and I locked the door behind me.

I didn't turn on the light. I slid down against the door until I was sitting on the hardwood, pool water pooling dark beneath me, ruining the finish, and I didn't care. My hands were still shaking. I brought my thumb to the inside of my left wrist and pressed, hard, harder than I meant to, until a bruise bloomed under the skin like a small blue flower.

I thought about my mother's voice. *Go be brilliant, baby. The world owes you nothing, so take it anyway.*

I thought about Leighton's dry eyes in that courtroom.

I thought about Grayson's hand on the back of my neck, how easy it had been for him, how practiced, like some part of him had rehearsed this moment without ever admitting it to himself.

Something in me that had been fraying for months finally gave, quietly, without drama, the way a rope lets go after it's already lost every strand but one.

I wasn't waiting for a reason anymore. I already had more reasons than I could carry.

I was just waiting for the right moment.
