Chapter 3

I threw myself into the work because it was the only thing left that hadn't been touched by his hands.

Three years of data. Three years of double shifts, of scribbling notes on the backs of coffee receipts, of testing a technique that could change how surgeons repaired catastrophic internal bleeding without losing the patient on the table. I called it my quiet obsession. Sylvia called it "the paper of the decade," usually while stealing my leftover salad from the break room fridge.

"You're going to win something with this," she said one night, watching me highlight a paragraph for the fourth time. "Mark my words."

"I just want it to be right," I said.

I meant it. After the trial, after the pool, work was the one room in my life where nobody lied to me. Numbers didn't perform gratitude. Data didn't cry on command. I could trust a p-value in a way I could no longer trust my own husband.

So I disappeared into it. I left the townhouse before six, came home after midnight, and some nights I didn't come home at all — just slept two hours on the cot in the surgeons' lounge and started again. Grayson didn't ask where I'd been. He'd stopped asking a lot of things.

I didn't know, not then, that my absence was exactly what he needed.

I found out the shape of it later, in pieces, the way you find out about a fire from the smoke that's already in your clothes. Leighton had mentioned, off-hand, over dinner at our house — because apparently she still came to our house — that it was "such a shame" Reagan's research would just sit there while I "figured things out." That someone with vision should get it in front of the right people. That the conference deadline was in two weeks.

Grayson had a key to my home office. He'd never used it before. He used it that week.

He didn't think of it as theft. I know that now, the way you know the shape of a scar even after the wound has healed wrong. He thought of it as helping. Giving Leighton "a chance." Never once did it occur to him that three years of my life sitting in a locked drawer belonged to me the way his company's ledgers belonged to him — completely, non-negotiably.

I didn't know any of this yet. I just knew I was tired in a way that felt almost peaceful, and that the manuscript on my laptop was finally, finally close to done.

It was a Thursday when it fell apart.

I was in the surgeons' lounge, eating a granola bar for lunch because I hadn't had time for anything else, when Priya from vascular leaned against the doorframe with her phone in her hand.

"Hey, random thing," she said. "You know Leighton Cook? Your old mentee?"

My stomach tightened before my brain caught up. "What about her."

"She's presenting at the National Trauma Conference next month. Big deal, keynote track." Priya scrolled, not really looking at me, just making conversation. "The abstract's wild, actually. Sounds a lot like what you've been doing. Blunt force hemorrhage control, staged clamping — didn't you present something like that at grand rounds?"

The granola bar turned to sawdust in my mouth.

"Can you send me the link," I said. My voice came out steady. I've always been good at that — keeping my voice steady while something inside me goes very, very quiet.

She did. I didn't open it there. I walked to the parking garage, level three, my car cold and dark and smelling faintly of the coffee I'd spilled on the passenger seat three days ago, and I sat behind the wheel before I let myself look.

The abstract loaded slow. I remember that — the small circle spinning, the seconds it took, my thumb already pressed hard into the inside of my left wrist without my permission.

Then it was there.

*Novel Staged Clamping Technique for Traumatic Hemorrhage Control in Multi-System Injury.* Author: Leighton Cook, MD candidate.

I read the first paragraph. Then the second. My methodology. My phrasing — the exact sentence I'd rewritten four times to get the emphasis right, still there, word for word, like she'd copied it straight off my screen. Because she had.

I kept reading because some clinical part of my brain needed to confirm the diagnosis before I let myself feel anything about it. Every table. Every case study. My mother's death had given me nothing but grief. This gave me proof — proof of exactly who Grayson had let into our lives, and exactly what he'd let her take.

I didn't cry. I didn't call him. I didn't scream into the wheel like people do in movies.

I just sat there.

Eleven minutes, the dashboard clock told me later, though it felt like no time and also like years — like watching my mother's monitor flatline all over again, except this time I could see exactly whose hand had pulled the plug.

Then I put the car in reverse, and I drove home to figure out what came next.

I didn't know yet how far he'd go to keep me quiet. I only knew, sitting there in the dark garage with the engine finally turning over, that whatever thread had still been holding us together had just been cut clean through — and this time, I was the one holding the scissors.
