Chapter 5

Crystal chandeliers cast a cold, brilliant glow over the mezzanine of the St. Regis ballroom. The annual Commerce and Heritage Gala was the private equity sector’s most anticipated evening, but beneath the live string quartet and clinking champagne flutes, the room buzzed with quiet curiosity.

Elise stood near the balustrade, dressed in a tailored emerald silk gown with an asymmetrical neckline that completely concealed the bandage wrapped beneath her hem. Her posture was straight, her chin raised.

She held a glass of sparkling water, watching the city’s financial elite network below.

"You look surprisingly well, Elise."

The voice was sweet, soft, and dripping with calculated hesitation.

Elise turned slowly.

Sienna stood two paces away, wearing a sleeveless white chiffon gown that accentuated her slender, delicate frame. Her wrists were bare, her makeup kept intentionally soft to project an image of fragile beauty freshly recovering from trauma.

And resting against her collarbone was a five-carat teardrop sapphire, ringed by micro-pavé diamonds on a platinum chain.

The *Céleste Tear*.

Elise’s gaze dropped to the jewel, and her stomach hardened into pure stone.

Four months ago, she had found the jeweler’s private portfolio sitting on Grant’s desk in his study. Grant had closed it immediately with an affectionate smile, telling her that some things were meant to remain surprises for their sixth anniversary.

He hadn't forgotten the piece. He had simply redirected it.

"Grant insisted I wear it tonight," Sienna murmured, noticing Elise’s stare and lifting a slender hand to lightly graze the pendant. "He said after everything that happened at the restaurant, I needed something bright to cheer me up. I told him it was far too extravagant, but you know how stubborn he gets when he wants to protect someone."

She stepped half an inch closer, tilting her head with an expression of manufactured sympathy.

"I heard you moved into a short-term rental downtown," Sienna added, lowering her voice so only Elise could hear. "Grant has been so stressed about it. He told me you're just trying to punish him. But marriage isn't a game, Elise. If you keep pushing him away over an emergency he couldn't control, he might finally realize who actually needs him."

It was a blatant test.

For six years, Sienna had played this subtle game of territory, hiding behind panic attacks and damsel routines while slowly stripping away every piece of Grant’s attention. She expected Elise to swallow the insult, or better yet, lose her temper and make an embarrassing public scene that would send Grant rushing to comfort his delicate muse.

Elise didn't blink. She took a slow sip of her water, set the glass on a passing waiter’s tray, and looked Sienna dead in the eye.

"You really don't know who funds this gala, do you?" Elise asked quietly.

Sienna’s smug smile flickered. "What?"

Elise didn't answer her. Instead, she raised two fingers toward the edge of the mezzanine.

Arthur, the gala’s head of guest operations, was across the floor in seconds. "Mrs. Sterling. Is everything satisfactory?"

"Arthur," Elise said, her voice clear and carrying over the quiet chatter of nearby guests. "Check the primary patron registry for tonight’s gala. Who holds the executive endowment for the heritage trust?"

Arthur looked surprised by the question, but answered without missing a beat. "The Hale Trust, ma'am. Your family’s estate funds eighty percent of this event."

Several guests at adjacent cocktail tables paused their conversations, their heads turning.

Sienna’s posture went rigid, a sudden trace of uneasiness breaking through her delicate facade.

"Then explain to me," Elise continued, pointing an index finger straight at the gold guest badge pinned to Sienna’s chiffon wrap, "why someone carrying an unauthorized secondary guest pass is in the VIP lounge."

Arthur blinked, quickly leaning in to examine Sienna’s badge. "Miss Campbell is listed under the Sterling Group’s executive table reservation."

"The Sterling Group’s corporate invitation was issued under the Hale family charter," Elise stated coldly. "As the sole trustee of the Hale estate, I am officially revoking her access. Remove her from the venue."

Color drained from Sienna’s face. She instinctively took a step back, clutching her sapphire pendant.

"Elise! Have you lost your mind?" Sienna gasped, her voice trembling in genuine panic. "I’m here with Grant! You can't just throw me out like a criminal!"

"I can," Elise replied, not raising her voice by a single decibel. "And I am."

Two uniformed private security guards materialized behind Arthur, stepping into position on either side of Sienna.

"Miss Campbell," Arthur said with tight professionalism. "Please escort yourself to the coat check, or my team will assist you."

"Wait! Get your hands off me!" Sienna backed away, her delicate composure shattering into erratic indignation as heads turned from every direction. "Grant! Grant, help me!"

A commotion erupted at the top of the sweeping marble staircase.

Grant pushed through the gathering circle of onlookers, his face flushed with irritation. He took in the scene in an instant—Sienna cornered by security, guests whispering behind linen napkins, and Elise standing motionless under the light of the chandelier.

"What the hell is going on here?" Grant demanded, stepping between Sienna and the guards. He glared at Arthur. "Stand down. She is my personal guest."

"She is trespassing on an event funded by my family," Elise said, cutting him off before Arthur could speak.

Grant turned to Elise, his jaw working as he fought to keep his voice down in front of the dozens of high-society eyes fixed on them.

"Elise, stop this right now," he hissed, taking a sharp step toward her. "You are embarrassing yourself, you are embarrassing me, and you are humiliating our entire firm. If this is about the damn necklace, I can explain it later. Sienna had a panic attack this morning and I—"

"I don't care about the necklace, Grant," Elise said.

Her voice was like cracked ice, perfectly distinct, echoing across the silent mezzanine.

Grant stopped mid-sentence.

"You can buy her ten more just like it," Elise continued, her gaze sweeping over him with complete, devastating indifference. "Because tomorrow at nine in the morning, our legal teams are sitting down to finalize the divorce."

A collective murmur rolled through the ballroom like an electric current.

Grant’s face turned an awful, sickly shade of white. The confident, untouchable billionaire froze on the spot, his mouth parting slightly in sheer disbelief. He hadn't expected her to follow through. He had convinced himself that the dissolution papers were a temporary threat—a desperate ploy to force him to grovel.

To say it aloud, in front of the city’s top investors, board chairmen, and the entire high-society press corps, wasn't an emotional outburst.

It was an execution.

"Elise..." Grant reached out, his hand visibly shaking as he tried to grasp her forearm. "Don't do this. We haven't even talked—"

"We're finished talking," Elise said.

She stepped cleanly out of his reach, pulled her wrap around her bare shoulders, and turned her back on him.

She didn't glance at Sienna, who stood frozen in mortification as security firmly guided her toward the service elevators. She didn't look back at Grant, whose pristine corporate facade was unraveling in real time before the eyes of his peers.

Elise walked down the grand marble staircase with a steady, unyielding cadence, ignoring the hushed whispers and parting crowds.

She pushed through the grand glass doors of the St. Regis into the crisp autumn night air.

The moment she cleared the awning, camera shutters erupted in blinding flashes. Paparazzi and financial journalists who had gathered for the gala swarmed the perimeter, drawn by the sudden whisper of a Sterling scandal leaking from the doors.

"Mrs. Sterling! Is it true the marriage is over?"

"Elise, a comment on the Sterling Foundation restructuring!"

Elise didn't pause for a single question.

Idling directly at the curb, commanding the VIP drop-off lane, was a sleek, midnight-black Maybach with tinted windows.

The rear passenger door swung open from the inside.

Roman Vance sat in the leather interior, his broad frame cast in shadow, his dark suit tailored to perfection. He didn't say a word. He simply extended a firm, steady hand toward her, holding the door open against the chaotic glare of the flashing press.

Elise met his slate-gray eyes for half a second.

Without the slightest hesitation, she stepped off the curb and slipped into the passenger seat beside him.

The heavy door closed with a muted, solid thud, sealing out the noise of the flashing cameras.

Through the tinted glass, Elise looked back one last time.

Grant had burst through the hotel’s revolving doors, sprinting down the carpeted stairs with his tie undone and his jacket flapping open.

The media instantly swarmed him, thrusting microphones into his face and blinding him with a barrage of strobes. Grant raised an arm against the glare, his expression frantic and desperate, his eyes locked onto the black car pulling smoothly into the flow of traffic.

For the first time in his life, Grant Sterling was trapped under the light—and the darkness closing in on him was entirely of his own making.
