My Alpha Rejected Me for the Pack’s Healer Chapter 1

The clinic was quiet in the way only a room with a dying woman in it can be quiet.

I stood at the side of the treatment table with two fingers pressed to Mara Clark's wrist, counting. Her pulse was slow. Too slow. And under the slowness, something else — a small, wrong flutter that didn't belong in any heart I had ever treated.

I looked at the tray on the steel cart beside me.

Alivia had prepared it three hours ago. Neat vials. Neat labels. Her handwriting was always neat. I lifted the first vial up to the lamp and read the concentration printed on the side, then read it again, then a third time, because my mind kept refusing to land on what my eyes were telling me.

The number was wrong.

Not wrong by accident. Wrong by design. The compound was calibrated to push a tired heart, not steady it. A dose like this wouldn't help Mara hold on. It would walk her, gently and on schedule, off the edge.

My hands went cold.

I worked. I worked the way I have always worked when something inside me is screaming — quietly, with my hands, one task at a time. I drew a counter-agent. I adjusted a drip. I pressed my palm flat to Mara's sternum and pushed everything my Healer's gift had into her chest, the warm current of it sliding from my bones into hers, looking for the damage, trying to lift it out before it could finish its work.

The damage was already set.

I knew it before my gift confirmed it. I knew it the way you know a storm is too close to outrun. The compound had been in her bloodstream for hours. It had bonded to the muscle. There was no clean way to pull it back out.

I worked anyway. I worked through three a.m. I worked through four. The window above the sink turned from black to a thin, mean grey.

At five-twelve, Mara's eyes opened.

She found my face. She had always been able to find my face in a crowded room. She was the only one in this pack who could.

Her fingers — paper-light, paper-cold — closed around mine.

"Leave him," she whispered. Her voice was barely there. "Before it takes the rest of you too."

I bent down. I wanted to tell her I would. I wanted to tell her I had already started planning. I wanted to tell her that I had heard her every other time she had said it and I was sorry, I was so sorry, that it had taken until now.

Her hand went slack against mine before I could shape a single word.

I pressed two fingers to her wrist out of pure habit.

Nothing.

I stood there in the grey light of that small room with the dead Luna's hand cooling in mine and I understood, with a clarity so complete it felt almost peaceful, that this was not a failure. This was a murder. And I could not yet prove it.

---

Lucian came for me at sunrise.

He didn't speak. He gripped my upper arm and walked me out of the clinic and across the gravel yard to the pack house, and I let him, because there was nothing in his face that could be reached by anything I might say.

The main hall was already full. Word travels fast in a pack at dawn.

Alivia stood at his shoulder when we reached the dais. Her eyes were wet. Her posture was soft. Her hand was on his arm like it had been resting there for years, which, in a sense, it had. She was perfect. She had always been perfect at this.

Lucian's Alpha tone broke open the air.

"My mother died on her table."

The word *her* landed on me like a thrown stone.

"Three years in our clinic," he said. His voice was flat, cold, fully decided. "And the one night it mattered, she failed."

I opened my mouth.

"Kneel."

The Alpha command hit my spine before my mind caught the word. My knees didn't quite buckle — I have a wolf they have never met, and she does not bend easily — but Damon Reyes was already moving. The Beta's hand came down on my shoulder and pressed, hard, and the stone floor met my knees with a sound that traveled the length of the hall.

No one spoke.

I looked at the wolves I had healed. The ones whose pups I had pulled through fevers. The ones whose broken bones I had set in the middle of the night without asking thanks. Not one of them met my eyes.

Blood was rising in my throat. The royal aura I had spent three years pressing down was fighting me now, scraping at the inside of my ribs, asking — finally — to be let out. I swallowed it back down. The taste was copper and salt.

I lifted my head.

Not in tears. Not in defiance. Just lifted it, the way you lift it to look at a thing clearly.

"Lucian." My voice was level. It surprised me, how level. "Reject me."

The hall went still.

Something moved across his face. Something small. Something almost human. It was gone before I could name it, replaced by the only architecture he had ever trusted — the straight, hard line of a man who had already decided.

"I, Lucian Clark, Alpha of the Black Moon Pack," he said, "reject you, Alena Wheeler, as my mate and as my chosen Luna."

The bond tore.

I have healed bond-breaks in other wolves. I have read about them in every text Moonveil keeps. Nothing in any of those texts mentioned the sound. There is a sound. It is inside your own chest and no one else can hear it.

My vision whited at the edges.

I stood up.

Slowly. Under my own power. I would not give them the gift of being lifted. I straightened my spine one vertebra at a time and I turned, and I walked the length of that hall on my own two feet, and behind me on the flagstone I left a thin red line that no one moved to clean until I was through the door.

---

I drove four hours.

I don't remember most of them. I remember the headlights of a truck somewhere outside Greer, and a gas station where I bought a bottle of water I never opened, and the way the Moonveil gates looked at midnight when my old key still turned in the side door because Dr. Guzman had never deactivated it.

I sat down at my desk. I turned on the lamp. I put my hands flat on the wood and waited until they stopped shaking.

Guzman found me at six.

He stood in the doorway for a long moment, taking in the wolfsbane-pale of my face and the dried blood at the corner of my mouth, and he said, very quietly, "Welcome back."

Then he went to make tea.

---

By the second night, the message came.

It arrived through Guzman's secure channel, sealed with the crescent of a throne I had not let myself think about in three years. I opened it at my desk with the lamp still on.

Four words.

*When you are ready.*

I read them twice. I folded the paper precisely in half. I set it in the top drawer of my desk and slid the drawer closed.

I was not ready.

I did not throw it away.
