My Husband Left Me to Die for His First Love — So I Gave His Rival My Heart

For six years, I embodied the ideal wife—patient, forgiving, endlessly accommodating. But when flames engulfed our hotel, Grant abandoned me beneath the rubble to rescue fragile Sienna, dismissing me with a cold truth: I was strong enough to survive. He was right. Roman Cross, the billionaire who rivals my husband in every arena, pulled me from the inferno, and I chose to walk away. Now Grant expects my quiet return, yet I'm seizing a lifetime project with Roman instead. As my ex's obsession reignites, I must decide if I can trust a man who never demands my strength—or risk everything on a love that asks nothing but my heart.

Chapter 2

The plastic IV cannula lay coiled on the stainless-steel tray, a tiny speck of dried blood marking the spot where Elise had pulled the tape from the back of her hand.

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and cold dawn air drifting through the cracked window. Every breath still scraped against the lining of her throat, but the fog in her head had cleared.

The door pushed open at five in the morning.

Grant walked in. His charcoal suit jacket was hooked over one shoulder, his silk tie loosened, and dark stubble shadowed his jaw. He looked exhausted, yet there wasn't a mark on him.

He glanced at the unmade bed, then noticed Elise sitting fully dressed in the armchair, wearing the clean spare clothes the hospital staff had provided alongside Roman Vance’s heavy wool overcoat draped over her lap.

Grant’s gaze dropped to the empty IV line on the tray. He let out a sharp, irritated breath.

"You shouldn't have pulled that out yourself," he said, stepping toward her. "The doctors wanted you monitored until noon."

There was no rush to embrace her. No trembling hands checking her for burns. No desperate apology for leaving her pinned beneath a burning timber.

Elise looked up at him, her eyes flat. "I'm discharged."

"You're being reckless," Grant said, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Sienna finally fell asleep about twenty minutes ago. Her resting heart rate was over one-forty for hours. She was hyperventilating so hard the attending had to sedate her."

He stopped beside her chair, looking down with an expression of weary condescension.

"I need you to be understanding about tonight, Elise," he continued, his voice dropping into that smooth, measured cadence he used during board meetings to pacify shareholders. "Sienna is fragile. Her nervous system can't handle trauma, and she doesn't have anyone else in this city. You know how she is."

*You know how she is.*

The phrase echoed in the quiet room, landing like a slap.

Elise didn't blink. "And how am I, Grant?"

"You're resilient," Grant said without hesitation, as if paying her an undeniable compliment. "You always have been. You keep your head, you assess the situation, and you handle it. If I hadn't carried her out right then, she would have gone into cardiac shock on that floor."

He stood there, completely unburdened by guilt, convinced that leaving his wife to suffocate in a burning building was merely a sound logistical choice.

Elise stared at him, and suddenly she wasn't in Room 312 anymore.

She was sitting in the cold waiting room of St. Jude’s surgical center a year ago.

Her mother had been on the table for an emergency core biopsy on a suspicious breast tumor. Elise’s hands had been shaking so violently she couldn't even hold a paper cup of water. Grant had sat beside her for ten minutes before his phone screen flashed with Sienna’s name.

Sienna had been hysterical, weeping that a strange man was lingering near her apartment door. Grant had stood up immediately, promising he’d be back in twenty minutes.

It had turned out to be a food courier who had the wrong floor.

Grant hadn't returned. Elise had sat alone for four agonizing hours until the surgeon came out to deliver the news that the mass was benign. When she had called Grant in tears of sheer relief, he had sounded annoyed, telling her he was busy installing deadbolts on Sienna’s front door.

*She needed me, Elise. Your mom's biopsy was routine anyway.*

It had never been about who was in greater danger. It had only ever been about who Grant cared to protect.

"Elise?" Grant prompted, checking his watch. "Are you listening to me? Let's get moving before morning traffic picks up."

Elise stood. Her ankle flared with a dull, throbbing ache beneath the tight elastic wrap, but she didn't wince. She gathered her purse and draped Roman's heavy overcoat over her arm.

"I'm ready," she said.

Grant nodded, satisfied that the matter was settled. "Good. The car is down in the circular drive."

They took the elevator down to the main concourse in absolute silence. Grant scrolled through emails on his phone, his thumb flicking across the screen with efficient ease. He didn't offer an arm to steady her limp. He didn't ask how badly her lungs burned. He simply assumed she was following where he led.

They pushed through the automatic sliding doors into the biting morning air. A thin layer of mist hovered over the pavement.

Grant’s black Mercedes sat idling in the passenger drop-off lane. He walked to the passenger side, pulled open the door, and looked back at her.

"Get in," he said, holding the door open. "We'll go home, get a few hours of real sleep, and talk through the insurance claims later today."

Elise stopped three paces away.

She looked at the leather interior. She looked at the dashboard where Sienna’s favorite lavender hand lotion always sat in the cupholder. She looked at Grant’s hand resting casually on the car frame.

"No," Elise said.

Grant frowned, his hand freezing on the door. "What?"

"I'm not getting in your car, Grant."

His jaw tightened, a flash of irritation breaking through his tired facade. "Elise, don't start this now. It’s five in the morning, we've both been through a disaster, and I haven't slept in twenty-four hours."

"Then go home and sleep," she said evenly.

"Stop acting like a child," Grant snapped, lowering his voice as an orderly wheeled an empty gurney past them. "You're throwing a tantrum because I had to manage an emergency. I didn't abandon you, Elise. I knew you could find a way out. I trusted you."

"You didn't trust me," Elise said, her voice terrifyingly calm. "You just didn't care if I died."

Grant flinched as if struck, his dark eyes flashing with anger. "That is an absurd thing to say. I am your husband. Get in the damn car."

He reached out to take her elbow, his fingers curving to guide her with that familiar, unyielding grip.

Elise stepped back, cleanly evading his touch.

The rejection hung between them, stark and sharp. Grant’s hand remained suspended in the empty air, his brow furrowing in genuine shock. For six years, she had never pulled away from him.

A yellow taxi rounded the corner of the hospital loop, its roof light glowing through the gray dawn.

Elise raised her left hand.

The cab signaled and pulled smoothly up to the curb, stopping right behind Grant's idling sedan.

"Elise, what the hell do you think you're doing?" Grant’s voice cracked with rising panic and disbelief. "Where are you going?"

She didn't answer him.

Elise walked past him to the taxi, her stride steady despite the pain shooting up her right calf. She opened the rear door, slid onto the worn vinyl seat, and pulled the door shut with a solid, echoing thud.

"Where to, miss?" the driver asked, glancing into the rearview mirror.

"The Carlton downtown," Elise replied clearly. "Take the highway."

Outside the tinted glass, Grant lunged toward the taxi. He struck the window with an open palm.

"Elise! Roll the window down! Elise!"

The driver hit the gas, and the cab surged forward into the morning drizzle, leaving Grant stranded on the curb.

Elise turned her head and looked through the rear window.

Grant stood alone under the glaring amber streetlights of the hospital drive, his arm still raised, his phone clutched uselessly in his fingers. The familiar mask of effortless control had shattered, replaced by a wide, disoriented stare as he watched the red taillights pull away.

For the first time in six years, he didn't know where she was going.

And for the first time in six years, Elise didn't care that he was left behind.
