Chapter 3

Ian crouched down until we were eye level. He did it slowly, the way he crouched for every camera he'd ever worked, tugging his slacks at the knee so they wouldn't wrinkle. Up close, his cologne smelled the same as it had on our wedding day. I hated that I noticed.

"I had my lawyer draft these weeks ago," he said, and produced a folded set of papers from inside his jacket, holding them the way a man holds a peace offering. "Sign them. Tell the cameras you're sorry, that it got out of hand, that you need help. I'll handle the rest with dignity. No one has to hate you forever, Natasha. Just for a news cycle."

His voice was smooth. Reasonable. The same voice that told America to trust him every night at six o'clock.

I looked at him for a long moment. My knees had gone numb against the concrete, and somewhere behind my ribs a very old, very quiet part of me was already counting exits.

"You have no idea what you've done," I said. Barely above a whisper. No inflection at all.

Ian laughed. Not cruelly — that was the worst part. He laughed like I'd told a joke at a dinner party, something to be indulged and forgotten. He'd never once, in seven years, taken a single word out of my mouth seriously.

He stood, brushed off his knee, and lifted two fingers toward the man holding my left wrist. A small gesture. Keep her down. Then he turned and walked back toward the stage, back toward the lights, back toward the version of himself the whole country was already falling in love with.

What I didn't know, kneeling there with my shoulders screaming, was that four miles away, in a JSOC office with the blinds drawn against the gray afternoon, a man was watching the same broadcast I couldn't see.

Declan Bennett stood in front of the monitor with his arms crossed, Major Sarah Reyes at his shoulder, both of them silent as the feed cut from the podium to the side door — to my wrists seized, to the chrysanthemum crushed flat under a stranger's shoe. Reyes told me, much later, that he didn't move for five full seconds. Not his jaw, not his hands, not his eyes. Five seconds of a man who had spent ten years teaching himself stillness like a discipline, and watching that discipline burn to nothing in real time.

Then he said, "Full detachment. Armored transport. Arlington. Now."

He was already reaching for his dress jacket before she'd cleared the doorway.

Back in the coordination room, I didn't know any of that yet. I only knew the door opened again, and this time it was Dalia.

She waved the security men into the hallway with the same soft, gracious smile she used for cameras, and they went, because nobody questions the grieving colleague. The door clicked shut. She crouched in front of me exactly where Ian had, close enough that I could see the tear tracks already drying on her cheeks — real tears, real makeup, none of it meant for me anymore.

"You should see your face," she said. Her voice had changed. Sharp now. Satisfied. "I've been planning this for over a year, Natasha. Do you understand that? A year."

"I understand," I said.

"No, you don't." She tilted her head, studying me the way you'd study something that used to be dangerous and wasn't anymore. "Ian didn't fall for me by accident. He chose me because you were never enough to hold onto a real man's attention. Too controlled. Too far away, even when you're standing right next to him. He told me that. On our second night together." She smiled, small and pleased with herself. "By tomorrow morning, nobody in this country will remember Natasha Stone existed. They'll remember the woman who cheated at a memorial for the dead."

I didn't answer. My wrists throbbed where the bruises were already forming, but my face stayed still, the way it used to stay still in rooms with no cameras and no rules at all.

She leaned closer, and for one strange second her voice softened, almost tender. "I learned everything I know from you," she said. "You should be proud."

Then she stood, smoothed her skirt with both palms, and walked out without looking back.

I stayed on the floor a moment longer, listening to my own pulse, to the coffee machine humming in the corner, to the distant murmur of a crowd that had already decided who I was.

I thought about the chrysanthemum on the ground outside, crushed under a stranger's shoe.

I thought about Emory.

And somewhere in the back of my mind, quiet and precise, the part of me that never really stopped being a soldier began, very calmly, to count down.
