Chapter 4

The guard's grip had loosened somewhere in the last ten minutes—not much, just enough that I noticed. Adrenaline does that to careless hands. Mine had gone from numb to cold, and cold I could work with.

I didn't move yet. I let my mind do what my body couldn't, because there was nothing left to do on that floor except understand exactly how deep the hole was that they'd dug for me.

I would learn the details later, piece by piece, in depositions and confessions and the flat testimony of a federal investigator reading from a file. But even kneeling there, I could feel the shape of it, the way you feel a blade before it cuts—cold air on skin a half-second before the sting.

Her name was Priya Chandra. A private investigator, mid-thirties, ordinary sedan, a long lens camera she kept in a diaper bag so nobody looked twice at her parked outside a cemetery before dawn. Dalia had hired her fourteen months ago. Fourteen months of predawn mornings, of me kneeling at an unmarked stretch of grass with a single white chrysanthemum, believing I was alone with my grief the way I'd been alone with it every year since Emory died. I wasn't. Priya was always three hundred yards back, lens patient, waiting for the one frame that would matter.

The photo they used wasn't even the best one. It was just the one where the light did the most damage—gray dawn, my coat dark against the headstones, and behind me, blurred at the edges by distance and a long exposure, a second figure. A man. Tall. Standing guard the way he always stood guard, close enough to protect me and far enough that I never once turned and caught him there.

Declan.

I didn't know that yet, not with certainty, not until much later when the truth of how long he'd been watching over me finally cracked open like everything else that day. But some old animal instinct in me had always known someone was there. I'd told myself it was nerves. It was him.

They cropped the photo tight enough to erase the headstones, erase the flower, erase everything that would have told the truth. Then they stripped the metadata and rebuilt it with a timestamp that put me somewhere I'd never been, at an hour that matched nothing but the story Ian needed told. And to be sure the dates lined up perfectly, to be sure there was no gap he couldn't fill—Ian had used his press credentials, the same credentials that let him walk into briefing rooms and shake hands with generals, to pull my travel and movement logs from a classified personnel database. A federal crime, committed with the same steady hand he used to knot his tie every morning. He never hesitated. Men like Ian never do, right up until the hesitating is done for them.

Outside, in the wind and the flashing cameras, Dalia was giving her performance to a colleague's lens, and I could picture it perfectly even without seeing it—the trembling chin, the pause exactly two seconds before the tears, the way she'd say *I always sensed something was wrong, but I loved her too much to say it out loud.* She would hint at other men. A pattern. A woman who was never who anyone thought she was. She would cry beautifully, because crying beautifully was the only skill she'd ever built entirely on her own.

By the time she finished, a charity link would already be glowing in her bio, and strangers who had never met either of us would be sending her money to prove how much they cared. Ian's network would loop her statement every sixty seconds until her face became wallpaper, until my name became a punchline.

None of that mattered yet. Only the wrist mattered.

I let my shoulders drop, just slightly, just enough to look defeated. The guard's fingers eased another fraction, distracted by his phone, by the noise leaking in from the hallway. I rotated my wrist against the pressure point at exactly the angle I'd been taught a lifetime ago, in a room with no name, by an instructor who told us pain was information, nothing more. My hand slid free.

I didn't run. Running was for people with nowhere better to go.

Instead, I reached into the lining of my coat, where a second phone had lived, charged and forgotten, since long before Ian ever proposed on that terrace with the lights and the music. Force of habit. The kind of habit a husband dismisses as strange without ever asking why.

The line connected on the second ring.

"It's time," I said.

I didn't wait for a response. I ended the call, folded my free hand back into my lap beside the other, and let my breathing settle into long, even counts—four in, four out—while the bruise on my wrist deepened from pink to purple, and somewhere in the quiet, distant part of my chest, the soldier I'd buried for ten years finally opened her eyes.
