Chapter 2

The gasp was still rolling through the crowd when I saw her.

Dalia sat four rows ahead, phone raised, thumb moving fast over the screen. She wasn't looking at Ian. She was looking at her follower count. I knew the exact angle of her face when she cried on camera — chin down, eyes up, mouth soft. She wore that face now, tears already falling, and underneath it, for one half of a second, her mouth twitched into something that wasn't grief at all.

I didn't need to read the caption to know what it said. I found out later anyway. *I wanted to protect her. I can't stay silent anymore.* Three minutes. That's all it took for the hashtag to climb. Three minutes for people who had never met me to decide exactly what kind of woman I was.

A man two seats down was already filming me on his phone, tilting it up like I was an animal at a zoo. A woman behind him leaned into her husband's ear and whispered something that made him look at me with his lip curled.

I stood.

That was my mistake — not defending myself, not speaking. Just standing, the way you do when a room starts to feel wrong and your body tells you it's time to move. Three men in dark polos converged on me before my knees had fully straightened, one from the left, one from the right, one cutting off the aisle in front. Security. Not the kind that protects. The kind that's been told who to arrest before the crime happens.

"Ma'am, you need to come with us."

"On whose authority." My voice came out flat. Not loud. I didn't need it loud.

No answer. A hand closed around my upper arm, hard enough to bruise, and my bag tipped sideways off my lap. The chrysanthemum fell out, white and small, and someone's shoe came down on it without even noticing.

"Have you no shame?" a woman shouted at my back as they pulled me toward the side door, and the sound of that — a stranger's voice, righteous and thrilled — was worse than the grip on my arm.

I didn't fight them. I want to say that was dignity. It wasn't. It was math. Three bodies, one exit, cameras everywhere I couldn't control. I catalogued the room the way I'd been trained to a lifetime ago — door hinges, sight lines, who was armed and who was just angry — while my feet moved where they pushed me, because sometimes the smartest thing a soldier does is let herself be dragged.

The coordination room behind the stage was gray concrete and folding tables, a coffee machine humming in the corner like nothing unusual was happening at all. The door shut. The noise of the crowd cut off, replaced by something worse — quiet, and the sound of my own knees hitting the floor.

They put me down hard. A hand pinned each wrist behind my back, the angle sharp enough that my shoulders screamed. Concrete bit through my slacks. Somewhere to my left, a phone screen glowed — someone already recording, angling for my face.

I kept my chin level. I kept my breathing slow, four counts in, four counts out, the way I used to before a breach, before the part of a mission where your hands have to be steady no matter what your heart is doing.

Ian walked in three minutes later.

He took his time. Straightened one cuff, then the other. Looked at me on the floor the way you'd look at a stain you were disappointed to find on your own carpet — not angry, just weary, like I'd let him down by existing.

"I never wanted this," he said, to the room, to the phones, to anyone but me. "But I have a responsibility. To the men and women we buried today. To their families." His voice caught, right on cue, right where he'd rehearsed it catching. "How do I stand at that podium and talk about honor, when my own wife—"

He let the sentence die there. He was good at that. Letting silence do the cruelest work for him.

One of the hands on my wrist tightened, testing, maybe hoping I'd flinch. I didn't. I looked at Ian instead — really looked, the way I hadn't in years, past the tailored grief and the trembling chin, at the small tells underneath. The flick of his eyes toward the phone in the corner, checking the angle. The way his hand kept drifting to his ring finger, touching skin where the ring should have been and wasn't.

He wanted this filmed. He wanted this seen.

Somewhere behind him, through the gap in the door, I caught a flash of red — Dalia, hovering just out of frame, watching her own work unfold with the patient satisfaction of a woman checking on something she'd planted.

My wrists were going numb. My knees ached against the concrete. I didn't cry. I didn't beg. I let my face go still, the way it used to go still in the dark, in places with no cameras at all, and behind that stillness I started doing the only thing I still knew how to do better than anyone else in that room.

I started planning.
