Chapter 2

The summons came at 5:12 a.m., delivered by a Delta who wouldn't look at me. "Alpha wants you in his study." Nothing else. I already knew, the way you know a storm has arrived before the first drop hits your skin—by the pressure in the air, by the way my wolf had gone still and small somewhere behind my ribs, waiting.

I dressed slowly. I don't know why. Maybe some part of me wanted five more minutes of being a woman who still had a mate, even a false one, even a lie I'd built a life on top of.

Elena was already in the study when I walked in, standing near the bookshelf with her hands folded and her eyes fixed on a spot on the carpet. Gamma Reyes stood by the door, arms crossed, jaw tight. Witnesses. Maxwell had brought witnesses. That told me everything before he opened his mouth.

He stood behind his desk, backlit by the gray window, and for a moment I thought—stupidly, out of five years of habit—that he looked tired. That I should ask if he'd slept. The instinct rose and died in the same breath.

"Julianna." He said my name like a formality, like the first line of a memo. "I'm not going to draw this out."

"No," I said. "I don't imagine you are."

Something flickered in his eyes at that—surprise, maybe, that I wasn't shaking, wasn't already reaching for him the way I had every other time he'd raised his voice at me over the years. I kept my hands loose at my sides. I made myself breathe.

He squared his shoulders the way he did before pack announcements, the Alpha posture, the one that used to make my chest swell with something like pride. Now it just looked like armor.

"I, Maxwell, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, and his voice dropped into that register, low and resonant, the tone reserved for vows and commands, "never accepted you as my bonded Luna."

The pain hit before the meaning did.

It started in my sternum, a white-hot wire threading through bone, and then it split open into something enormous, something that dropped me half a step back before I caught myself. My hand flew up and pressed flat against my chest, over the place where a mark should have been and never was. I heard a sound leave me, low and strangled, and I hated it, hated that my body still had this much of him left to lose.

Because that was the cruelest part. The bond had never been whole. It had only ever existed in me—in the nights I'd stayed awake counting his breaths while his spine knit back together, in every hour I'd spent believing devotion was the same thing as being chosen. He felt nothing right now. I was the only one in this room whose soul was tearing.

Elena's eyes finally lifted to mine. I saw something there—not quite guilt, but close enough to its shadow. She didn't move to help me. She never did.

The pain crested like a wave breaking, and for one long second I thought my knees would give. I thought of every story I'd ever heard about rejection, about wolves who collapsed, who screamed, who begged their Alphas to take the words back.

I did not kneel.

I straightened instead, slow and deliberate, my hand still pressed to my chest like I could hold the wound shut by will alone. I looked at Maxwell, and I made myself hold his gaze until he was the one who looked away first.

"I heard you clearly," I said.

Then I turned and walked out of the study, past Gamma Reyes, down the hall, past the portrait of Maxwell's father that had hung there since before I arrived, and I did not let myself run until I was around the corner and out of anyone's sight.

In my room—not our room, I understood now, it had never been ours—I pulled the burner phone out from beneath the false bottom of my jewelry box, the one a Lycan border operative had pressed into my hand three years ago during a routine territory inspection, murmuring, "In case you ever need to reach someone above Ironveil." I had kept it as insurance I never expected to use.

My fingers were steadier than I expected as I typed.

*I have proof of an unregistered mate fraud inside Ironveil, and evidence of illegal pack dealings. I need safe passage out. I am offering what I know in exchange.*

I sent it to the only number saved in the phone's memory, a contact labeled simply: G.

The reply came in under ten minutes.

*I have waited five years for this call. Hold your position. I am already moving.*

I stared at the screen until the words blurred. Five years. My mind went back, unbidden, to a burning highway, to a stranger's blood on my hands, to a face I had memorized in the space of minutes before paramedics pulled him away from me forever—or so I'd thought.

The realization landed like a second blow, quieter than the rejection but somehow just as staggering.

Gabriel Ashford. The Lycan King.

Maxwell's own uncle.

And he had been watching Ironveil—watching me—the entire time.
