My Alpha Husband Humiliated Me Until the Lycan King Claimed Me Chapter 1
At 6:14 on a Tuesday morning, my skin peeled away from my ribs.
That was how the transfer felt. I knelt on the hardwood of our quarters with both palms pressed against Maverick’s bare chest, funneling every drop of raw healing aura I possessed straight into his bloodstream. Beneath my fingers, his pulse hammered fast and greedy.
"More, Harper," he urged, his voice rough with manufactured grief. "Ohio is losing elders by the hour. My mother’s pack won't survive the night if the fever takes hold."
My vision blurred. A deep, sick tremor ran through my spine. Inside my chest, my wolf—usually so quiet, subdued beneath the vitamin regimen I'd taken since childhood—growled a desperate warning, clawing at my ribs to pull back. I ignored her. For five years, I had believed our bond was equal, that our childfree vows were made to preserve my strength for the Nighthollow Pack. I loved Maxine like the mother I never had.
I pushed the last surge through. The light bled out from my palms, soaking into Maverick’s skin.
A heavy, unnatural scent flared off him as he absorbed it—sweet almond and bruised berries, layered thick over his usual pine, clinging to his throat like perfume from another she-wolf. My stomach dropped. I swayed, the room tilting, my wolf collapsing into a dead, dangerous silence.
Maverick stood up immediately. He didn’t reach down to catch me. His jaw set hard to the left, calculating and completely composed. He looked full of light, his aura vibrating with pure, stolen health. The look on his face wasn’t gratitude. It was pure relief, the kind a thief feels when the vault clicks open.
"Rest," he said flatly, pulling his jacket on. "I have to oversee the transport convoy personally."
He walked out, locking the door behind him.
Three hours later, the shouting at the pack house gates tore me from a feverish sleep.
My limbs felt like lead. I staggered down the wide oak stairs, clutching the railing just to stay upright. The guards were gathered in a circle near the gravel drive, their hands hovering near their belts as they surrounded a frail figure in a faded woolen coat.
"I just took the Greyhound," the elderly woman was saying, her voice thin and breathy. "The girl at the ticket counter said Nighthollow was this way. I came to see Harper."
I froze on the front porch.
It was Maxine Stone.
She held a dented biscuit tin wrapped in a cloth with hand-embroidered blue flowers. Her eyes were clouded with age, but she was entirely lucid. Not shivering. Not sweating with Ohio fever. Perfectly, devastatingly alive.
"Harper, sweetheart?" Maxine blinked at me, shuffling past the stunned sentries. "A bank notice came to my mailbox yesterday. It said a massive medical transfer had been logged under my name for an emergency relief convoy. I didn't order no doctors, child. I got on the bus to ask you what my boy is doing."
The world went violently still.
I pressed my palm flat against the porch pillar. The wood was cold. Inside me, the drained hollow of my power still ached, an empty cavern carved out of my flesh.
*Ohio was never sick.*
Maverick hadn't sent my aura to save his mother. He had taken it somewhere else.
I reached for the mate bond, slamming my consciousness against the link. *Maverick.*
Silence.
I shoved harder. The link wasn’t broken, but it had been deliberately severed on his end—muted behind a thick mental wall.
"Harper?" Maxine asked, touching my trembling arm. "You look pale as a ghost."
"Come inside, Maxine," I said, my voice dropping into an ice-cold calm.
I led her to the parlor, handed her a glass of water, and walked straight into the Alpha study. The heavy double doors swung open. The air inside smelled of dust and fresh pine.
I went straight to his mahogany desk. The top drawers were pulled open, entirely emptied of territorial ledgers. And on the far corner, where a framed photograph of Maxine had sat face-down for five straight years, there was only an empty square of dark wood. He had packed his things. He wasn't running a convoy.
He was abandoning Nighthollow.
"Luna Harper."
I turned. Beta Callum Reid stood in the doorway. His shoulders were tense, his hands tucked behind his back.
"Where is he, Callum?" I asked. My voice didn't rise. It dropped, smooth and sharp as glass.
Callum’s jaw tightened. His eyes flicked to the cleared desk, then to the floor. "The Alpha left at dawn for Silverfang territory. He said it was an urgent diplomatic meeting."
"Silverfang?" I stepped forward. "Why would he need a medical convoy in Silverfang territory?"
Callum flinched, refusing to meet my eyes. That single twitch of his jaw told me everything. He knew. The Beta had been kept in the dark about the details, but he knew Maverick was operating in the shadows.
"He took two honor guards," Callum whispered, the crack in his loyalty finally showing. "And Selena Ortiz went with him."
Selena. The mid-ranking she-wolf he had promoted three months ago. The scent of sweet almond and bruised berries I had smelled on his neck that morning.
My inner wolf didn't whimper. She snapped her fangs, rising from the exhaustion like a feral beast waking in the dark.
I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I reached into Maverick’s desk safe—the code was our mating anniversary, a date he hadn't bothered to change—and pulled out the master ledger of pack territory deeds, along with the encrypted satellite tracker tied to his SUV.
I walked out to the parlor where Maxine was still clutching her tin of cookies.
"Maxine," I said, holding out my hand. "We're taking a drive."
On the dashboard screen of my car, the red transponder dot blinked steadily, sitting motionless inside the private ceremonial lodge of the Silverfang pack house. Underneath it, the vehicle's automated audio log flashed an incoming dispatch ping: *Ceremonial Union scheduled for 11:00 AM.*
