Chapter 2

The alarm woke me before the nurse did.

It came from down the hall, thin and electronic, the kind of sound that doesn't stop until someone makes it stop. I pushed myself up on my elbows, and pain tore through my abdomen like a seam ripping. I didn't care. I was already swinging my legs over the side of the bed when the door banged open and a nurse rushed past without looking at me.

"NICU," I heard someone say in the hallway. "Bay four."

My daughter was in bay four.

I grabbed the IV pole and used it like a cane, and I made it maybe ten feet before my knees buckled and a different nurse caught me under the arm. "Mrs. Harrison, you can't—"

"That's my baby."

"You can't be on your feet." She was already walking me back, and I was too weak to fight her, and that was the worst part — that my body had betrayed me at the exact moment I needed it most.

By the time I was allowed near the NICU doors, it was over. Through the glass I saw a cluster of staff around one incubator, saw a resident's hands moving fast, saw a monitor lead dangling loose off the side like something torn free. My daughter's small chest was working too hard, her lips a color no lips should ever be.

"What happened," I said. Not a question. I didn't have the breath for a question.

No one answered me. But I heard, from somewhere behind me in the hallway, a voice pitched high and trembling and just loud enough to carry.

"I saw her," Lilith was saying, one hand pressed to her chest, the sash of her blush-pink robe slipping off her shoulder in a way that looked almost staged. "I saw Saoirse standing right over the incubator. I didn't think anything of it, I swear, I didn't know—"

Caspian was already moving toward her, already folding her into his arms like she was the one who'd almost lost a child.

"She's lying," I said.

He turned on me so fast I flinched. "You were seen."

"By her." My voice cracked, not from grief, from disbelief. "Caspian, check the cameras. There are cameras in that hallway, there are cameras everywhere in this hospital, just check—"

"I don't need a camera to know you've been unstable since the delivery." His words landed flat and final, the boardroom voice, the voice that ended things instead of starting them. "You've been jealous of her since the day I brought her into this family. Don't think I haven't noticed."

"I have been bleeding in a room by myself while my daughter fights for her life fifty feet away, and you think I did this?"

"I think," he said, lowering his voice so the gathering nurses had to lean in to hear the cruelty in it, "that you'd rather see that child suffer than see Lilith's baby thrive next to her."

A nurse actually gasped. I didn't. I had nothing left to gasp with.

Angelina arrived like weather, sweeping in from the elevator bank in a coat that had never once touched anything as common as a hospital floor. She took one look at the scene — Lilith weeping, Caspian's jaw set, me swaying against the IV pole in a gown with my own blood dried brown along the hem — and she didn't ask a single question.

"She is not to be in that unit without supervision," she told the charge nurse, as though I were a stranger, as though I were a stain to be managed. "Not without a personal escort. Is that understood?"

The charge nurse looked at me with something that might have been pity, if pity were allowed on that floor. "Understood, Mrs. Harrison."

There are two Mrs. Harrisons in this hospital, I wanted to say. But I already knew which one she meant.

So I found the other way in.

The night nurse did her rounds at two in the morning, and for those forty-five minutes, no one stood at the glass to stop me. I learned her schedule the way I used to learn seating charts for galas — quietly, exactly, without anyone noticing I was paying attention at all.

I would stand at the window in my socks, my hospital gown, the hallway lights dimmed to something almost merciful, and I would press my palms flat against the glass until the cold of it worked through the ache in my wrist.

I watched her chest rise. I watched it fall. I counted the seconds between, the way you count breaths during a storm, waiting to see if the next one comes.

I wasn't allowed to hold her. I wasn't allowed to touch the incubator, or ask her nurse's name, or bring her the small yellow blanket I'd bought before any of this happened, folded now in a drawer at home I hadn't seen in days.

But I could stand there. No one had taken that from me yet.

So every night, for forty-five minutes, I stood at the glass and loved my daughter the only way they'd let me — silently, from a distance, with my hands pressed flat against something I could not get through.
